Malcolm X said, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” This statement was made about media over forty years ago, so is it possible for a young adult in today's society to escape the control of media? Media is everywhere, therefore young adults are subject to see and utilize it on a daily basis! Young adult's decision on what to wear, what to eat, what to love, and what to fear is based on media influence. These influences that the media has on young adults are not positive and there are various reasons why. Media is massive in itself, therefore it comes in many forms and these forms have created an unsound reality for young adults. Media is used to communicate messaging and those that are negative directly affect young adults. Advertisement is one of the most powerful forms of media. Advertisement's main objective is to make an announcement that captures consumer's attention, in order to promote a product, service, or express an opinion. Propaganda was the very first form of advertisement, that took place during World War One. The government used Propaganda to control the people of their country by printing disturbing illustrations on posters and in the newspaper that depicted other cultures in a certain manner, to intentionally raise emotion and eventually create hatred. Children have no preconceived notions as they are not yet tainted by experience and they say things both honestly and sincerely as they were taught. They don't ever sugar coat what they say because they have no reason to and they have not adapted that practice yet into their young lives. They are spontaneous and are very perceptive. They are very focused in what they want and there is no question about it. I always remember when I was a child and I would say something to catch my parents attention they would always exclaim "out of the mouth of babes!" I find I say that as well when our son says something that brings a smile to my face and a realization that he makes some amazing observations as he expresses them in his own way.
Propaganda in today’s society serves the same purpose as it did many years ago, and that purpose is to promote a fitting solution to a problem or to sell an idea or item. There are various types of propaganda in the world. The main way that propaganda is advertised would be the media. Whether it be television, newspapers, radio etc . the “promoter”advertiser will always find a way to promote their idea or product. You also have seven basic sections or types of propaganda; transfer, testimonial, glittering generalities, plain folks, bandwagon, name calling and card stacking. Each of these is used in propaganda whether it is current and modern art forms such as Nike™ commercials or from 100 years ago in political cartoons. Each of the seven types of propaganda differs and is unique in their its own way. Propaganda is, has always been, and shall continue to be, a huge part of the advertising world of society.

In my own personal opinion, I think media has a huge effect on middle age adults when it comes to physical appearance. There is all these commercials on television saying that that they need to be thinner, get rid of the grey, or to try a new hair growing product if they are losing it. The thing is some middle age people believe that they need all of those things to make them look younger, when in reality they do not. They think they need the hair coloring, the anti-wrinkle cream, or the dieting pills because in their head they believe it will make them look and feel younger. As you’re walking down a street you may notice a young group of girls or women walking and they see a huge billboard of a beautiful model. They might stop and stare at her and then discuss about her perfect her body is. Not knowing in the next five minutes they’ll be comparing their bodies to the model and feeling bad about themselves wishing that they had her body. Not to mention, that the photo may be photoshopped to make it seem as her body is perfect, or she had plastic surgery to fit the idea of having the perfect body. The fact that the media thinks they’re encouraging young girls and women to embrace their beauty, they’re influencing them that they have to have a perfect body in order to get attention. The media has put a lot of pressure on young girls and women to look perfect and second guess their bodies, when plastic surgery is never the answer to build their self-esteem up.
In the essay, “Propaganda Techniques in Today’s Advertising” by Anne McClintock, McClintock shows seven different ways that propaganda is used. One mostly used by advertisement today would be Glittering Generalities, using positive words to bring attraction to their product while concealing the actual meanings. They will use inspiring words that are very vague that the consumer would not really understand what the product would really do to benefit them but would be inspired to buy it anyways. Another technique mostly used would be Testimonial, were producers would pay celebrities to advertise their product for them since they have more fame than normal actors. Advertisement used today is targeted to make the consumer believe that what they are paying for is the real deal when it is only beneficial for the producers.
Advertising invades every aspect of our modern lives. It is shoved upon us from every aspect of media. Internet, television, radio, movies, and even our streets seem to be centered on it. We are asked to buy, try, and consume the next best thing. While most things advertised are meaningful and can possibly be used to either help or make our lives better, we do not necessarily need it. Violence in the media has become a hot topic of discussion due to its potential effects on young audiences. While content on broadcast networks such as ABC and NBC is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), premium channels like the Home Box Office (HBO) do not fall under their jurisdiction and therefore do not need to obey such regulations (Title 47). A prime example of graphic violence on television that falls outside of the FCC’s purview is found in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones. The ninth episode of the third season of Game of Thrones, “The Rains of Castamere”, is well-known as one of the most violent episodes in the show. This is mostly attributed to a specific scene in this episode, known by the book readers as the Red Wedding. The scene is one of the most violent scenes in all of Game of Thrones history. The Red Wedding scene was quite controversial after it aired in 2013, with some arguing that it was too violent, even for an HBO television show. Others stated that they thought the violence was necessary considering the historical references mentioned, and the way the book was written. I believe that the purpose of the violence and gore found in Game of Thrones, and more specifically “The Rains of Castamere”, is to replicate the way modern audiences think of the Dark Ages. It also stands to entice the original readers of the novels who would expect the violence of the show to live up to that in the books.
Media Manipulation is a series of related techniques in which partisans create an image or argument that favors their particular interests. They are different type of media manipulation such as Activism, Hoaxing, Marketing, Political campaigning, Propagandizing, Psychological warfare, Public relations, and Advertising know as Ads. An advertisement is a message printed in a newspaper, or broadcast to individuals, that attempts to persuade consumers to buy a specific product, or agree with a particular idea. Advertising messages are spread through numerous and varied channels of media. The major media are Print Advertising, Broadcast Advertising, direct mail, business publications, outdoor advertising, and Online Advertising also known as Digital. In addition, a significant amount of all advertising is invested in miscellaneous media, such as window displays, free shopping-news publications, calendars, blimps, sky writing by airplanes, and even sandwich boards carried by people walking the streets. They are placed in television, radio, magazines, and can even be seen on billboards by the roadside.
Our society has used different forms of advertisements, commercials, and propaganda since even before the 20th century. Propaganda is described to be information that is usually misleading or uninformed, that tends to be used to promote political views or to persuade a consumer into buying a sellers product. According to Ann McClintock, propaganda is “the systematic effort to influence peoples opinions, to win them over to a certain view or side.” Overtime with the advancements of technology, forms of propaganda and advertisements have changed, but the end result has always been the same, as well as the goal— to get the consumer to buy the goods.
The American media industry generates approximately 600 billion dollars annually through its programming and advertisements. The economic system of the United States and tough market competition have led to a massive media boom, and being the largest industry in the United States in terms of revenue, The media have been successful in corrupting people’s mind, with young teens being the largest group of victims. In the current situation, our economic, social and political decisions are widely being influenced by the invisible hands of money hungry media. According to the Centers for disease control and prevention (CDC), the suicide rate is currently the third largest leading causes of death among teenagers, and the numbers are growing day by day. Media’s contribution to this upward trend of suicide may be debatable, but we can’t deny the influence of television commercials on teens. Through false advertisements, unrealistic standard of beauty, and social norms, Media is fueling a national epidemic of teen suicide.
Advertising is the process of communication where a person or groups of people are persuaded to take some form of action, usually to make a purchase or participate in a particular behavior. Advertisements are used in hopes to increase the number of people that use their products or services. All product advertisements try to make people buy their products, so they manipulate facts about the product to make it more appealing to the consumer. Advertisements have such a high level of advertising around the consumers that it is causing it to shape around us as a society.
