Cats entered the New World on the Mayflower. A new breed called the American Shorthair was created. This tame cat would have been distinguishable from the wild cats by their color patterns, hair length, and size. The tame cat could help hunt for birds and rodents because they are hardy, tough, and athletic. It is also likely that the tame cat bred with the wild cats, so new breeds that had the characteristics of the wild ones entered the domestic stock. Cats were not always liked though. There were many superstitions about cats, which made people afraid of them. The cat became known as an indispensable pet for all the genuine witches. The black cat also became known as one of the symbols of Satan. These superstitions may have started because nightly, silent expeditions of feral cats, or their weird cries and shining eyes in the dark. So, cats have not always been accepted as a domestic pet.

Whether it is an inside cuddle buddy, or an outside mice killer, cats make wonderful pets. While dogs stay dirty, drool, and bark, cats clean themselves, are clean animals, and meow quietly. Cats are warm and fuzzy and love to cuddle while they take naps. Dogs are too rambunctious and energetic. Cats make better pets than dogs.

Overpopulation of domestic animal is when there are more cats, and dogs than people want them as pets. As of today it is impossible to determine how many stray cats and dogs there is in the United States alone. The animal shelters estimate about 70 million stray cats in the United States alone. Cats can produce about two litters of six kittens every year, and a dog can produce one litter of six or more puppies per year.

But since yearly cat ownership is cheaper than dog ownership (ASPCA), many people choose to have a couple of cats, so the pets can provide companionship to each other when the owner is not at home.

While dogs and cats are a lot alike, you have to consider their differences before you choose your pet. As mentioned before cats do not require cleaning nor exercising or training, while dogs are in need of all these things. An animal that would take care of your house when nobody was home and protect the owners from burglars from breaking in. This movement or trend started forming in recent years. As Cesar Chavez once quoted, “We need in a special way , to work twice as hard to help people understand that the animals are fellow creatures , that we must protect and love them as we love ourselves” Animals today have as much equal rights as family members today. As many more pet parents are adopting and falling in love with these animals and being able to connect with them on an emotional level, Pet parents are able to relate and equate animals to human children. Many more couples are finding themselves with fewer children or not wanting to have the burden of raising actual children. As a result this trend keeps growing. Another reason that people are starting to see the increasing number in this trend is some adults are finding themselves with the loneliness, where the children they once had are moving away. These animals are feeling a void of loneliness. According to a recent survey done by Stanley Cohen about eighty-one percent of people do not consider themselves to be just a pet owner, but a pet parent and treating their pets equal to their children.

Owning an animal can take up a lot of time. For most people time is of the essence, and spending a lot of time on an animal is unrealistic . Cats are able to live without their owners for days on end. They can usually find something to eat, and pee if plants for example. But dogs need to be put in kennels and looked after by another person. Dogs also have to be put on leashes when they are outside. Cats have the ability to roam freely because their owners do not have to worry about them causing a lot of trouble. A cat is allowed to be outside until late hours because owners know that the feline will make its way home, where as a dog at night is usually brought inside, or chained up outside.

There are estimated to be 66 million cats in North America. This estimate has risen by 7 percent between 1994 and 1996 and is estimated to grown at an annual rate of 4% over next few years. There has been an uptrend in multiple cat households which is primarily due to the ease of care and maintenance for cats relative to other pets.

Cats, are a common household in America and are known to outnumber dogs as pets. Natalie Angier talks about this in her article “The Killer Cats Are Winning!” I think cats should be allowed to be outdoors. Cats are playful animals, they are great pets, and I own one.

What do people think about when they hear the word “feline”? Some people think of a furry companion curled up next to a fire, and some people think of a ruthless, heartless tomcat who growls at anything that moves, and others think of the majestic creatures the prowl the deep jungles of India and South America. The population of felis silvestris catus, or domesticated cats, is growing every day. This would not be a problem, if every single one had a home and a fire to keep warm next to. The cats without homes reproduce, leading to more homeless cats. Eventually, these kittens will revert to their wild hearts, living in the cold, dark alleys of towns and cities. I have heard the old saying that dogs are man’s best friend. I don’t know much about dogs, but I do know a lot about cats. I have had a cat as a pet for at least 30 years. They are wonderful and I know I will always have one in my life. I think cats make the perfect pet because they are self sufficient, intelligent, and good companions.

Cats came to the United States from Europe. They came from Egypt before that, and they were treated very special in Egypt because one of their gods was a cat. This is when they got domesticated, which was almost 4,000 years ago. Even though they have been domesticated they still do what every living thing does. In order for cats to survive they must get energy, move and grow, adapt to the environment protect themselves and reproduce.

More facts about cat people are that they are more likely to live in an apartment, as well as to live alone with the exception of cats (Reader’s Digest). However, that does not mean there is an overabundance of cats in said apartment.

Having a pet is a wonderful idea. Pets bring companionship, personality, and gut wrenching humor to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two.
