Every school year it seems to me that I'm drowning in homework. I usually drag my feet to get things done, and everything has to be done perfectly. The only time I stop worrying about something being perfect is when I'm just tired of thinking about needing to get it done. I also drag my feet to clean my room so every day there is something that needs to be done. On the rare occasion that I finish cleaning my room, doing homework, or anything else needed to be done then I can lay in bed all day, sleep whenever I want to, doodle, watch T.V., or anything else I want to do. It's really wonderful when I don't have to stress myself out over knowing that I have things needed to be done, and I'll get a complete and satisfied feeling. Those lazy free
No homework ever again? That would be nice. But, perhaps it’s possible. There are many problems with homework that, if addressed, could persuade school boards to get rid of homework for good. Homework has a negative effect on middle school and high school students because it limits their free time, keeps them up at night, and discourages out of school activities.
After spending most of their time in school, students are expected to complete even more work, seems almost ridiculous. Homework is taking time away from students other activities. In the book, “The Case Against Homework,” by Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, they state how homework, “robs children of their sleep, play and exercise time need for proper physical, emotional, and neurological development.” Homework is no different than a towel placed in water. It soaks up the time from other activities A study done by the Brown Center found an
I have moments when I procrastinate, get stressed out, and the biggest one, when I’m genuinely tired. After a seven hour school day, and then a two hour practice, the last thing I want to do is sit down and do some homework. But as I’ve grown and got older,
The author of the article “My insane Homework Load Taught Me How To Game The System”, Elif Koc, wanted to explain how her homework load caused her and her friends to find a way to complete their schoolwork with minimized efforts. On a daily basis, she was overwhelmed with the amount of work her teachers dumped on her. She was forced to increase her efficiency, by less than ethical means, in order to survive high school. Her attitude was very realistic, albeit unforgiving. She knows that her teachers would have been upset with her, and would have been upset with their students if they were caught doing what the rest of their grade is guaranteed to be participating in. Although she does not show any remorse for her actions and argues that it is the fault of the education system, as its expectations are misguided. She would do enough work of her homework that her teacher would think she had done the assignment. Koc learned how to be a good student, not a good learner.
Every morning I wake up searching my bed for my phone. Flipping sheets and pillows until my phone appears. I lay back in bed and check my Facebook, Snapchat and Reddit. Telling myself that i'll get out of bed in fifteen minutes but I get absorbed into my phone and that fifteens minutes turn into thirty minutes. I start to do the rest of chemistry homework but in five minutes I lose my concentration and I reach for my phone without thinking. I end up doing my homework last minute before class. I always tell myself that I got to do my homework right after school. But that never happens because the same thing that always happens in the morning, Its a endless cycle. While I was typing up this essay, I thought of batman and went to Netflix and watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Five hours wasted that i could've used for homework. Some people self diagnose themselves with ADHD and blame their attention span and willingness to learn on ADHD. I blame it on the internet and ourselves.
Throughout my time at Chelan High School, I faced many challenges when it came to my homework and it took me nearly my whole high school career to realize how to fix it. The problem was how unmotivated and lazy I was when it came to have to complete my homework. Looking back at it now it seems that the solution was so simple, and it is frustrating that it took me so long to be able to self-motivate myself. It turns out that this responsibility was a habit of mind. This habit of mine helped me very effectively and completely changed how I went about doing all my school work and studying.
In a study General Society conducted, 16% of teens viewed themselves as workaholics, 39% said they felt under constant pressure to do more than they can handle and 64% cut back on sleep to do the things they need to do. As these tasks are quite time consuming, students state that homework is the most out of all the unpaid activities they do throughout the day, as 60% complete 2 hours and 20 minutes on average each day (CBC news, 2007). The amount of homework students receive on average daily has greatly increased in the past 15 years, which concerns parents. Homework interferes with students’ lives outside of school, a student’s overall health, and consumes countless hours, which is why it should be limited to a reasonable amount.
Dear Molly, I’m a sophmore in highschool and everyday I get so much homework-it’s crazy. When I get home from school, I’m never motivated to my work. I know I should do it, but I really don’t want to. I know it sounds lame but honestly it's a daily struggle. All of my friends have this problem as well, but they just “deal with it” and do it anyway. I want to be like them but I don't know how they do it. I take six classes a day and that's at least 3-6 hours a night after I get home from my seven hour school day. Do you have any ideas on how I can stay motivated and do my homework? -Eleanor
The debate regarding exactly how much homework is too much homework has been an ongoing debate for years. As of right now, there seems to be no end in sight for this debate. Various adults believe that if children do not obtain homework, then they are not learning properly. However, numerous children are obtaining a substantial amount of homework per night, as well as per each class. Once a child exceeds a certain amount of homework, then it is no longer beneficial for the child’s education. An excessive amount of homework can essentially become harmful to the child’s education. As a result, teachers are struggling with finding the right amount of homework to assign to students. The National Education Association as well as the National Parent-Teacher Association endorse the “10-minute rule” for teachers to follow when assigning homework to students. If a child is assigned an excessive amount of homework, then the child might experience more harm than good when attempting to complete the assigned homework.
All my life I have been a lazy person, doing just enough to get by. Most of the time, in high school, I was content with just a “C”. The only time I wasn’t, was if it was a class I liked, and I paid attention to. If this was the case, I could have received a 99% on a test and been dissatisfied. But, for the rest of my classes, which were most of my classes, that I didn’t like, I never paid attention to or did homework, and I still managed to do well on tests. So basically I didn’t do anything except take tests and I still got satisfactory grades. In school I was so lazy that there could have been a project due worth about 20% of the final grade and I still wouldn’t do it.
People expect so much out of teenagers, especially the students who are involved in sports and maintain a job throughout the school year. They are expected to attend classes and their extracurricular activities; they have to make it to work on time, finish their homework, do their studies, and on top of that, get enough sleep at night. This is the kind of busy schedule students uphold in their week and it’s overwhelming for them. It causes stress and exhaustion, and people still expect them to do well and keep up with everything. Is this how we want students to feel all the time? Sure we want them to accomplish goals and be the best they can be, but one way to relieve some stress is less homework. When they come home from work or sports
I was never the type of person that had to stay up all night to do homework or read, even if I did have a lot, because I never let it get to me. I tried not to list all of the things I had to do, but instead did one at a time. Not stressing out about school work helped me grow as an academic student, and also allowed me to dedicate some of my time to helping people out in anyway possible.
It is evident in almost every high school, students don’t seem to appreciate the piles of homework their teachers’ assign. Students don’t seem to have the time nor the willpower to do homework sometimes, due to their busy schedules or motivation for school. Majority of students, I’ve spoken to have said homework not only wastes time but also takes away from the excitement of learning. Clearly, in most schools, homework isn’t the most popular choice for students. Sometimes teachers assign a couple of pages of homework but then tag along a project and a presentation into the mix, leaving us young adults procrastinating to perfect everything before the due date, usually being the next day. Homework is an unnecessary chore which stresses teenagers out by taking time out of their day, which could be used for more effective manners for preparing for tests and developing their minds.
I get tired often, and when that happens, I lay around the house with my daughter all day and do nothing. I get lazy when I get exhausted. To prevent the urge to procrastinate my school work, I simply take a moment to think about my future and my daughter's future. My daughter has been the one to motivate me to do better since day one. I want to do better and succeed for her so I can provide for her in the long run. I want to give her a great life, and I want to provide her with a good example of what success looks like in hopes that she will follow in my
I haven’t done homework in about four years and going back to doing homework is not exciting. There were points where I be up all night trying to do one assignment and had more assignments that need it to be completed as well. Some homework assignment was either too hard or that I need it to e-mail my professor on help me out on my homework. I got used to doing my homework now but still don’t like the fact that I have to go back doing homework.
