By the mid-1980’s Colombian drug cartels controlled most of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. More than 15 tons of cocaine smuggled in each day, netting the cartel as much as $420 million a week. The cartels involved saw it as an opportunity to gain status and defeat the American government. What each person in a cartel was most afraid of was being extradited to the United States.

During this time, the illegal drug trade in Colombia grew immensely with an emphasis on cocaine trafficking. The most notable drug trafficking organizations, the Medellin Cartel and the Cali Cartel, grew until they had enough money and military power to have a strong influence on politics in Colombia. Newfound political sway on behalf of the cartels contributed to a notoriously corrupt Colombian government. Violence in the country increased as opposing drug cartels engaged in intergroup fighting that would eventually lead to the collapse of both the Cali and the Medellin

One of the most common drugs use across the nation is Cocaine. Cocaine is classified as a stimulant, which is a group of drugs that cause short-term increase in the mental or physical state. Cocaine has a rich, long history dated back hundreds of years. The native people of South America first used it; they used to chew on it. The natives introduced this drug to the Spaniards when they landed on the continent. This lead to the research of Coca leaves a few hundred years later in Europe. Scientists sought o isolate and name the compound. After it was isolated, it was used as an anesthetic and other medical purposes for a couple of years. It was a useful anesthetic for eye and nasal surgery. However, today, it has very limited anesthetic use.

Drug trafficking is a major problem in the United States. When this trade reaches third world countries, it usually spreads incredibly fast and law enforcement is more easily corrupted. It is the illegal trade involving cultivation, manufacture, distribution, and the sale of substances which are illegal under the law. The drug trade is estimated to bring in more than $100 billion every year from the U.S. The number of global deaths each year due to illegal drugs is over 200,000.

Drug crimes happen to violate state or federal drug laws from possession, manufacture, use, or distribution. Trafficking does impede national currency of transactions seeing as, “both the federal government and many states criminalize drug trafficking and broadly define it as the trade or dealing in illegal substances” (Tran, 2016, para. 2). Its seriousness will confront some measurement by a range of economic damage, loss to victims, and so on. Ultimately, some elements bring an allowance of illegal narcotics or controlled industrial compounds to circulate within the U.S. government.

International drug trafficking cause a MULTITUDE of problems for many people. When a person overdoses from drugs, it doesn't just stop there, this person might have been a dad for example. This child could find themselves in foster care, run away and start drugs themselves, causing the whole problem with their father to start again on them. Drug trafficking can also force harder measures for immigrants; with all of the trafficking going on, more suspicion is brought back. It make it that much harder for immigrants to get into the country that they desire, like the U.S., and they might truly need the help. In a country of struggling economies, many have viewed the drug trade as one South American’ s most successful businesses. Latin America 's drug trafficking industry has been depicted in United States popular culture through motion pictures such as Scarface and Traffic. The purpose of my research is to take away society’s perception of what Hollywood has depicted drug trade to be and bring out what narcotics trafficking really is, as well as trying to coincide with the motivations of those people who take part in this. I will present the origins of drug trafficking, case studies regarding two countries (Mexico and Colombia), as well as the overall effects of the business on South America and United States. The U.S decided to work with the Colombian government to establish an extradition treaty between the countries in 1979 (United States Congress ). This treaty would allow the U.S to extradite the cartel traffickers for a trial in the U.S. This caused Pablo to attack the government and this ultimately caused the Medellin cartel’s downfall. In the early 1990’s the cartel’s leaders were apprehended and the leader Pablo Escobar was killed in a firefight after having to run for his life. (PBS2).

This paper will provide a brief history and description of cocaine and explain its addictive qualities from both a biological and neurological perspectives. It will also explain the neurological affects that causes its addictive qualities. Clinical issues discussing cocaine abuse treatments will be reviewed considering the process of the neurotransmitters that contribute to cocaine addictive behaviors and the medical treatments designed to help with the withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and the impulsive nature of the drug.
