Dyslexia Assessment

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines dyslexia as a disorder in the brain that makes it difficult for an individual to write, read, and spell. People who have been diagnosed with the learning disability are often thought to be “lazy, dumb, careless, ‘not trying hard enough,’ or [have] behavior problems” according to Ronald D. Davis, founder of the Davis Dyslexia Correction Center.

Dyslexia is the term used to describe a cognitive disability in learning that affects reading, writing and communication despite an average level of intelligence and an equal access to education. (Le Jan et al., 2010). Dyslexia is commonly used as a blanket term that covers many smaller forms of cognitive impairment including surface dyslexia, phonological dyslexia, hyperlexia, letter identification dyslexia and letter position dyslexia. Most dyslexics suffer from multiple forms of these specific dyslexias and cases of pure developmental dyslexia are quite rare. (Castles, Bates, & Coltheart, 2006).

If you ever talk to an adult with dyslexia, they would most likely have plenty of stories of the difficulties they faced in school related to having dyslexia. For instance, they may have been diagnosed late, bullied because of their symptoms or excused of being dumb and lazy by teachers and parents alike. Elementary school is the beginning of a student’s formal education and the foundation for their future education and professional life. As a reader, I have always struggled. From the first time, I began to read to now. We never understood why until I was in sixth grade. In sixth grade, I was tested for dyslexia and as a result we found out I was dyslexic. Through my grade school and high school years We did everything and anything to help me to read better.

Once a week I would attend my dyslexia class to learn how to read,write, and speak english right. I had a hard time learning how to spell and pronounce long words. I would always walk into the class and get right to work because I wanted to be able to read the same as the other kids in my class. In and out of the class I would work on my reading by reading books or just looking at billboards why we drive from place to place.

Learning about dyslexia could help improve students performance in school. Encourage them when the student improves and that tells them to keep up the good work. When that is done, it makes that students feel proud and not put down since they may be slow learners in the classroom. Support the sense of confidence and self worth that individuals with dyslexia develop (Publisher house inc. 2016). Giving the student a sense of confidence in themselves will encourage them to do well. It sets them up for success. Getting a compliment or a pat on the back makes anybody feel good and praising all that they have overcome and or accomplished in school. Dyslexia is a specific reading disability due to a defect in the brain's processing of graphic symbols according to the MNT Knowledge Centre. It is a learning disability that alters the way the brain processes written material. It is typically characterized by difficulties in word recognition, spelling and decoding. People with dyslexia have problems with reading comprehension.

Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that implicates a person's reading ability, caused by a defect in the brain where it has difficulty in processing graphic symbols. Also referred to as a “reading disorder” or a “reading disability”, Dyslexia can also affect a person's writing, spelling and even speaking ability.

Lampkin (2015) describes Dyslexia as a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. However, Handler and Fierson (2011), go a bit deeper and define it as a receptive language-based learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent word recognition, rapid automatic naming, and/or reading-comprehension skills. In short, Dyslexia is a complex reading disability that many children and adults suffer from.

Prior to doing my research on this topic, I was inclined to believe that there was a cure for the symptoms that were known as signs of dyslexia. However, my thoughts about this issue changed quickly as I realized there were none – it is something you just have to work with. This word was used in different ways throughout articles written on the topic which is why I will give a brief introduction of the word and meaning before going into analysis of data presented by researchers who claim to be able to accurately predict this rising phenomenon of dyslexia. We all probably have a general idea of what the word dyslexia means as it has embedded into our psyche since the time we realized the true concept of the word and its value to our lives. According to the International Dyslexia Association (n.d.), “15-20% of the population has a language-based learning disability. Of the students with specific learning disabilities receiving special education services, 70-80% have deficits in reading” Language-based learning disabilities affect and impacts an individual throughout their lives. One of the most common diagnosis is specific learning disorder with impairment in reading, which is commonly referred to as dyslexia. Patients with dyslexia usually experience difficulty in reading and writing. They are often confused when pronouncing words and phrases, and usually have difficulty in reading fluency, comprehension, writing, spelling, recognizing and processing certain types of information.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that certain individuals can have. Dyslexia is a disorder that involves difficulty in learning to read, interpret words, letters, and symbols. Dyslexia makes it hard for individuals to read and spell. Those diagnosed with dyslexia, struggle with the ability to understand what they are reading or spelling. Dyslexia makes it difficult for individuals to be able to read fast and accurately, which puts them behind in their learning. If a child is unable to recognize letters, finds it difficult to rhyme, is slow to learn the sounds of letters, reads slowly, has poor spellings, or has problem in decoding unknown words, then most probably, the child is suffering from Dyslexia, which is a common learning disability. Dyslexia in children is a common problem; however, most of the time, it goes undiagnosed and untreated and this causes problems in the later stage. The problem occurs in the brain and it can be easily treated if diagnosed at an early stage. Both parents and teachers can help a child overcome the problem by being considerate and recognizing the symptoms on time.

15% of Americans suffer from a reading problem known as Dyslexia. These individuals who suffer from Dyslexia may, according to Webmd.com (2015), “have trouble with reading, writing, spelling, math, and sometimes, music”. When I think of Dyslexia, I think of someone who mixes up their numbers and letters around while reading. Growing up, I would mix up my numbers and letters (I still mix up my numbers from time-to-time) and was tested for Dyslexia. I was never diagnosed with being Dyslexic, but it was always something I thought about.
