There are numerous types of learning disabilities that so many people are challenged with on a daily basis, especially children. These learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing difficulties. According to the Learning Disabilities Association of America, these difficulties can interfere with children learning basic skills such as mathematics, writing and/or reading. They not only interfere with basic skills, but they interfere with skills on a higher level such as organization, time planning, attention, abstract reasoning and long or short term memory. I know that a learning disability does not necessarily set a child or person apart from others. I just believe that it is very important to make sure your child receives the proper assistance they need to continue to excel academically, in their relationships and in their futures. The reason being is so that the child will be less likely to struggle and face similar issues as an adult who have never been evaluated. This leads me to the parents who try to keep this issue a secret from their children. When some people think of someone with a learning disability they often think of someone who is not able to contribute to society. It is often assumed people with learning disabilities are people who have low intelligence, work the school systems, and are socially awkward. As someone who has a learning disability these misconceptions have made it difficult for me to be open about it and prove these stereotypes wrong. Most of these misconceptions stem from people not understanding what alearning disabilities are, a learning disability “results from a difference in the way a person's brain is wired. Children with learning disabilities are as smart or smarter than their peers. But they have difficulty reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling and/or organizing information if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways” (idonline.org).
