The way a school functions is very crucial to a student 's education and focus. The school’s environment could not be meeting the needs of the student. This could lead the student to become distracted, or disruptive. The way that teachers deal with distractions and disruptions could have a negative impact on the focus of other students. This may also have a negative impact on the education and future of the disruptive student. Schools are not structured to deal with disruptive students, which negatively affects students who are trying to learn. Schools and teachers should create new strategies to prevent or deal with disruptiveness in the classroom. If they do not, these disruptive students may drop out of school later, interfere with another student 's education, or worse.
Parents look for the ideal quality and functioning of schools when searching for the right school for their child. Some of these qualities, as Joseph F. Murphy one of the nation’s top experts in school leadership, suggest that:
A good school is a place where every student is known well, cared for, and respected, where each student is a member of a ‘family.’ A place where every student is challenged and supported to achieve ambitious goals. A place where teachers and administrators go to bed and get up thinking about how to make the first two of these come to life, where they work hard to make that happen, and where they hold themselves and their colleagues responsible for success. The author further discusses some schools similar to Anne Fox Elementary School, that have transformed and really became the academic haven for children, paving newer paths of success for their students. It gives an overview of the other chapters and lists some great changes that had taken place when these schools really adopted the principle, and the results they had received from making a change in their system. It goes to show that when our systems aren't working in terms of helping children meet their goal it is very important for us to become open to change and really believing that change and success in any child are possible as long as we believe in them. Becoming a supportive adult can make the biggest difference in a child. Disruptive behaviors are conditions that can have a great influence in the teaching environment. Disruptive behaviors unswervingly hinder the ability of the teacher or the capability of a learner to benefit from their classroom experiences. A learning environment should have actively engaged students, who are eager to participate and show knowledge is being acquired on a daily basis. However, some students are bored and disengaged with academic struggles, due to non-active lessons. Certain life factors such as family problems, financial difficulties are all factors that distract and contribute to students disruptive behaviors. Classroom management is defined as being "the methods and strategies an educator uses to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to student success and learning" (McCreary, 2011). When children are put into educational facilities, they get a chance to connect and surround themselves with others of the same age group. Schools can also have significant influence on a person’s individuality as well as peer groups, which influence a student’s academic integrity greatly. A student will not perform well no matter what the case is, if there is negative influence from his peers and their school environment. They affect a person’s attitude, personality in a positive or negative manner.
When implementing a discipline program, it is important that a teacher identify the difference between misbehavior and off task behavior. Misbehavior is a more serious action and should be treated accordingly. Misbehavior includes actions that are pre-meditated, habitual, unsafe, or demeaning. Off-task behavior includes actions like, talking out of turn or with other students, doing activities other than what the teacher has assigned, and lack of following instructions. While both types of behavior cause unwanted classroom distraction and should not be tolerated, there is an important difference between the two that must be identified. In the case of off-task behavior, the strategy to guide the student back on-task may require imposing a consequence as well as making an adjustment to the classroom management plan in order to re-route the student. In the case of misbehavior, imposing a consequence along with the addition of recruiting support from parents or administration may be needed to retrain the behavior.(Ross, 2009)
