CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Technology has always been at the forefront of newsgathering and the journalistic process. The last century has seen visual, audio and digital innovations contributing greatly to changing the way journalists think about and engage in their work. Yet these technologies have not by themselves redefined what it means to be a journalist, in the professional sense Lasorsa, Lewis & Holton (2011).
Social media is affecting the way a local television news station presents information to its audience and how its audience in turn receives information. The adoption of social media, in particular Twitter and Facebook have made a significant impact on how people choose to receive their news and information
The widespread adoption of social media and increased online activity by media organisations has led to the adoption of new ways of processing, collecting and dissemination news worldwide.
1.2 History of Kenya broadcasting corporation.
The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was first established in 1928 when the British were bringing ranchers to settle their new colony, because they needed a format to receive news from home. At that time, it was solely a British radio station. The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation has gone through many changes to become the media giant that it is
Moving forward, social media has been a major convenience and reward to virtually everyone. On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1). Horn (2013) also states, “More than half of reporters (55 percent) use Twitter and Facebook to source stories” (1). Social media has greatly benefited business life and personal life.
Most everyone has some form of social media. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram people have a way of communicating and getting news from all around the world. Unfortunately, this news is not always correct or trustworthy. Many people are not attuned to reading long articles or papers and just want the short story. Social media readily gives them shortened and condensed stories one after the other. Therefore, “traditional media has to adapt to the audience’s new
Monica Anderson and Andrea Caumont investigate how social media sites are reshaping the news and their effectiveness in engaging their audience. The authors posed five questions in their article, considering how social media users participate in and discover news, as well as the impact of social media on discussion of news events. Anderson and Caumont found that social media users are very likely to share news stories, discuss the events, and even share their own coverage of a news event. They also found that users often spend more time on a news site if they arrived there directly, rather than through a social media site. Finally, the authors state that social media can stifle one’s willingness to share their own opinion and discuss a news event. The authors obtained these conclusions by utilizing data from the Pew Research Center. This source is useful to my research topic as it sheds light on the ability of social media to encourage discussion of news stories.
Social media takes up a considerable portion of people’s lives. A myriad of people use social media; this makes news stories and articles on social media sites are a convenient way for people to obtain information about current events happening around the world. The author of Journalism and the Digital Revolution states, “Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest have become integral parts of the reporting process and vital connections
Social media can be seen from completely different aspects and points of views. A major role in these different opinions plays mostly the age of the beholder, because social media made an enormous change in the last 50 years. One very important aspect in our today’s society is to get as many information as possible in a very short time period ("Impacts of social media”) Through social media and especially social networks such as twitter and Facebook, the information gets spread extremely fast. There are for example reporters who search on those networks to get information for their news and articles. (“Impacts
Social media has now become a part of our modern day society and has a huge impact on our lives on a daily basis. Social media is the use of web and mobile-based technology to support interactive content. This content tends to be user generated and then might be promoted by other users to a new outlet or audience. Social Networking is a great
We cannot deny how big of an impact social media has on our lives now, not only on people but businesses too. It has opened a whole new door to the business world and given them a big opportunity to interact and attract a larger amount of customers. It’s given us a new and faster way of communication by exchanging pictures, stories, news, blogs, online discussions, etc. In exchange businesses have benefited by a long shot just by the click of a button. With the help of the Internet a company no longer is dependent on a particular customer base to survive because now it can reach out to a worldwide audience within seconds. It’s imaginable the countless business attributes of all social media to this day and still is growing. Social media
In the business environment or the workplace, social media continues to impact on business performance as well as organizational capabilities. On the other hand, it is
Social media has had a huge impact on the way that journalism is practiced and the way that the general public perceive news in the present day.
There are two types of media, and each type has his way to broadcast the information. “These two types are traditional and-social” (Hayles K., 2004). Traditional media includes: radio, magazines, newspapers, television, different publications and so on. Social media is the process of the informational interchange. In recent years, social media became part of everybody’s life. People exchange the information, opinions, news everywhere: in blogs, social networks, forums, etc. People became sources to each other. The importance of social media is rising extremely.
Social media has changed the way people think and how they communicate. It’s incredible to see how social media has become such a big part of our daily lives. Just to think social media as we know it was birthed less than ten years ago in August 2003 with MySpace and has become such an integral part of our daily lives. Synonymous with checking our email we go to our Facebook for not only our daily gossip, but for up to date news and events.
In today’s society there is a new desire to know what others are doing. Social media enables users to keep tabs on their followers while maintaining user productivity. The affects of social media has changed the way individuals receive their news, read their magazines, and organize the information they find on the Web. It has made the way people receive information easier and has challenged the way businesses are modeled.
In this Research paper I am going to discuss about the Impact of social media on organizations and business. In this paper I am going to start from the initial stage of the organizations technologies and how they are promoting their technologies and products using the different kind of forms. And how the organizations and the business are going to interact with the customers easily through the social media and also the there are negative shades along with the positive shades on the organizations. While many organizations think that they are much influenced by the impact of social media on them, as the recent studies and statics proved that. Examples of the different organizations and business which are got effected by social media are discussed in this paper. The ethical issues related to social media on organizations and business are also discussed in this paper. And the different effects and the positiveness of the social media also discussed. And the conclusion for overall impact of social media on the organizations and business are well discussed.
Both traditional and new media provide information, news and messages to inform us happenings around the world (UK Essays, 2013). Regardless of if it is the newspaper, magazine or Facebook, e-magazine, all types of media are able to relay information and entertainment.
To wholly have a grasp on how this new founded approach to journalism has changed alongside technology—as well as understanding the dangers such openness brings forth—one has to understand what exactly those changes are. Primarily, those that are writing for the sake of offering information have, whether willingly or not, fed into the usage of social media as it has become a centralized method of distribution that is relatively inescapable with the current times. As such those framing the news for the masses find an authentic avenue to stay in contact via social media that has benefits ranging from, “its extraordinary newsgathering potential; its potential as a new tool to engage the audience; and as a way of distributing our news” (Eltringham, 2012), all of which are deeply different from the presentation of reporting that occurred during earlier eras. Days of strongly structured instances of journalism that could not travel with such speed have been replaced as, “social media has trashed many of the foundations on
