Effective demonstrations:
In providing demonstration make sure you are in a position where the athletes can clearly see and hear you, identify 1 or 2 key points for the athletes to focus on. Then send them away to try it on their own and check on them to see if they are doing it correctly. Ask if they have any questions and check they understand by asking open questions. There are times when it might be more appropriate to use someone else to provide the demonstration. For example if there is someone who plays the sport at a high level, get them to join in the demonstration as they could make it more affective. Having a short or long term goal can encourage an individual to work harder, to be more focused on the task and to overcome setbacks more easily. Goal setting can affect performances in many ways some examples are; focuses attention, mobilises effort in proportion to the demands of the task, enhances persistence and encourages the individual to develop strategies for achieving their goals. Goals must be set according to the age, stage of development, confidence, ability and motivation of the individual. Beginners require very short term easily achieved goals to boost their self-confidence whereas the experienced individual need more challenging yet realistic goals. Goal setting is not just about identifying what you want to achieve but also how you will achieve it (process goals) and measure that achievement (performance goals). A good example of an effective coach that uses the skill of analysis of strengths and weaknesses is Warren Gatland, by taking notes of all the players performances on the pitch then he is able to design a training session, the training session will allow the players all to work on their individual weaknesses such as poor tackling technique, this individual work will help the players get past their weaknesses and make them a better team overall as they will all be better individually but more effective when working together. When planning for success you must make good choices on the path you are going to choose. The wrong path will put you somewhere that is going to take you off track of your goals. Goals are a part of everyday life. From gaining the strength to get out of bed in the morning to winning that blue medal around your neck, everybody has made a goal once in their life. Sometimes it can be as easy as saying you’re not going to eat that last cupcake on the platter in front of you or as hard as saying “Hello” to that special someone in your life that you find adorable, either way you have made a goal. It’s also important to remember there is short term goals and long term goals. Short term goals are easier to achieve and can be very helpful in leading up to your long term goals. We can even classify our goals into personal goals, academic goals, and professional goals, as well as others.
Research proved that athletes found their coaches training as well as instruction behavior and their style of coaching did have an impact on individual performance. This was important research for me in understanding how those I coach perceive my leadership and whether or not I am effective as their leader. My teams’ outstanding performance or lack of performance can be a direct link to my type of leadership skills in addition to my training. The primary role of any coach or athletic leader is to help their athletes and improve on their individual performance. “Several sport studies exploring the coach-athlete relationship claim that effective coaching includes basic ingredients such as empathic understanding, honesty, support, liking, acceptance, friendliness, cooperation, caring and respect” (Moen, Hoigaard, & Peters, 2014, p. 76). The challenge for me is finding the balance between being supportive and meeting the individual needs of team members while also enhancing their ability and understanding of the sport. These smaller goals can span any amount of time, short-term or long-term (Massey, 2014). Having smaller sub-goals will help make the main goal appear more achievable, and celebrating the completion of each of these sub-goals will serve as a catalyst to keep the student excited and motivated as they continue along their educational journey (Williams, 2014). By not setting smaller goals and missing larger goals, students will get discouraged and feel like failures (Williams, 2011).
Coaches should have sport specific skills as they need to understand certain technical aspects of the sport they are trying to teach. A coach needs to ensure that they have a good knowledge and understanding of their own sport and how the latest information in sport science can aid to develop performers, this is important so coaches can deliver demonstrations correctly and carry out good practice as if they were to demonstrate something wrongly then students could pick up bad habits by simply imitating and doing as their instructed. However if a coach is less knowledgeable in a particular area of sport they could use their transferable skills .

“I will start running”, for instance, is not a well developed goal. Professor Chang from the National Changhua University conducted an experiment testing the impact of specific and nonspecific goals. Elementary students were split into two groups: in one group, the teacher gave students nonspecific goals like “do your best” and “try hard”, and in the second group, the teacher gave each student a specific number of questions to get correct on a test. When both groups took a vocabulary post-test, students who were given a specific goal scored on average twenty-four points higher than students who were given nonspecific goals (Chang 61). To revise the first statement I wrote earlier, “I will run two miles a day” is a more specific and tangible goal that a rookie runner can take to approaching and persevering in their goal. As a note, people who feel they aren’t as motivated as others shouldn’t fear goal setting. In fact, two researchers conducted an experiment that created randomized groups with both high and low achieving students. The results concluded that “low need achievers who received externally imposed goals performed more poorly on the task than did low need achievers with self-set goals or high need achievers with imposed goals” (Horn and Murphy 275). With the research done by Horn and Murphy, it becomes evident that the goals people persevere through are usually more effective when they are self-imposed. Why?

My coaching philosophy is centered on development, education, hard work, advancement, and a team first mentality. It is extremely important to me to help those around me develop physically, physiologically and socially. I know the value and excitement an education brings. Challenging athletes to do their best and giving them realistic goals will help them develop their skills. I love to say do everything you can to do the best you can. And by this I simply mean strive to give everything you have to what you are doing, while not putting yourself in harms way by over doing it. The team development as a whole is essential. Every sporting team needs evaluating so that they know their strengths and weaknesses. Evaluation is very important in sports as the performers need to know if they are working the the sport’s average potential and how (if needed) to improve.
Eccles and Allan Wigfield (2002), four different theories are discussing regarding motivation; expectancies for success, task value, integrated expectancies and values as well as integrated motivation and cognition. The basis appears to be discovering what motivates people. Eccles and Wigfield (2002) dedicated an entire section of their article to goal theories. When a sports highlight of a great play showcasing teamwork is watched on a highlight reel, what is the immediate reaction, that play was amazing. Great teams make great plays and often those successful plays transpire to playing field or court due to many hours of practice, handwork, repetition and dedication. Those plays didn’t just miraculously happen. Someone had to draw the game plan up and then figure out the most innovative way instill that play and game plan while catering to all of the attributes and learning abilities of their athletes in order to maximize on those abilities and talents. The same goes for classroom instruction. Teachers have the monumental task of understanding the social, cultural and cognitive behaviors of all their students. Teachers and coaches have to continue to remain flexible and be open to changes in teaching theories and techniques. The first line of education other than what is learned at the student’s home is from a teacher and a coach. It is highly important for teachers and coaches to be prepared and ready to shape these minds positively and to prepare students to be productive members in society. Coaching and teaching have many aspects in common and one helps augment the other nicely.
