Effective demonstrations:
In providing demonstration make sure you are in a position where the athletes can clearly see and hear you, identify 1 or 2 key points for the athletes to focus on. Then send them away to try it on their own and check on them to see if they are doing it correctly. Ask if they have any questions and check they understand by asking open questions. There are times when it might be more appropriate to use someone else to provide the demonstration. For example if there is someone who plays the sport at a high level, get them to join in the demonstration as they could make it more affective. Having a short or long term goal can encourage an individual to work harder, to be more focused on the task and to overcome setbacks more easily. Goal setting can affect performances in many ways some examples are; focuses attention, mobilises effort in proportion to the demands of the task, enhances persistence and encourages the individual to develop strategies for achieving their goals. Goals must be set according to the age, stage of development, confidence, ability and motivation of the individual. Beginners require very short term easily achieved goals to boost their self-confidence whereas the experienced individual need more challenging yet realistic goals. Goal setting is not just about identifying what you want to achieve but also how you will achieve it (process goals) and measure that achievement (performance goals). A good example of an effective coach that uses the skill of analysis of strengths and weaknesses is Warren Gatland, by taking notes of all the players performances on the pitch then he is able to design a training session, the training session will allow the players all to work on their individual weaknesses such as poor tackling technique, this individual work will help the players get past their weaknesses and make them a better team overall as they will all be better individually but more effective when working together.
