In healthcare, one of the elements is collaboration. According to Clements, Dault and Priest, (2017), it is important to identify collaboration as being both a process that affects work group and as an outcome. Collaboration can still take place whether or not health professionals consider themselves to be part of a team. When there is no collaboration, then having an effective work group would be impossible. Another element that is needed is cooperation. An effective work group would require the members to co-operate in order to meet the shared goal. Group members would sacrifice their independence and allow their activity to be managed by either the group leader or through shared decision making. Effective work groups must have honest, open lines of communication that flow between all members equally. Members who understand each other's unique communication styles are very likely to move the group in a direction that would be productive. Members should never hesitate to communicate to other members about issues and concerns, as well as share new ideas (Ingram, 2017). Having a group that consists of a variety of professional competencies can help the organization meet a variety of challenges. This is known as diversity of capabilities, another element that is needed. When building an effective work group, it is essential to make sure that each selected team member has the skills and strengths that would complement the skills, strengths and weaknesses of the other members. The group leader must make sure that each member has a unique specialty would allow them to trust each other while understanding what their own contribution is (Ingram, 2017). Adaptability is another element that is needed. The work group would need to be flexible and adaptable, since strategies, goals, tasks, workflows and even members can change. Members should be able to get together and meet new challenges directly, rather than resist change
Teamwork and collaboration with other healthcare providers is very important. To function effectively there needs to be mutual respect, open communication, and shared decision making in the best interest of the patient. As a member of a team it is vital to know ones own strengths and limitations, this way patients receive the best care.
Teamwork cannot be demanded. Everyone involved must discuss and understand what the goal is and what is required of them. Teams should have traits such as goals and objectives, empowerment, trust, authentic participation, innovation, creativity, risk taking and leadership. (Temme and Katzel, 1995)
Inter-Professional Team Model (PAARP) is used throughout the life cycle of a team and includes 5 phases describing actions of the interprofessional teams: purpose, assemble and charter, align, resource, perform. The division of labor is based on the scopes of practice of team members and takes into account KSAs of team members. In the PAARP model, actions of leadership give purpose to the group, and consistency of action by the leader is essential. Identifying purpose through goal-setting plays a large part in this theory and team members accept the goals of the team as their own and take responsibility for their part in achieving them. In the beginning of this activity, I did not know much about collaboration between different healthcare professionals. It helped me to clarify the meaning of a healthcare team and also to understand the role of different professionals in the team. Different team members have their specific roles and all of them work together to achieve a common goal –healthier patient. They work independently, but when it comes to decision making they seek advice from other healthcare provider in order to do the best for the patient. A team is a type of organizational group with independent members. They share common goals and work together to meet these goals (Northouse, 2016). The organization where I work has teams at various levels for maximizing the success. These teams include, core teams, coordinating teams, patient aligned care team (PACT), contingency teams, ancillary teams, support and administration teams (Veterans Health Administration [VHA], 2015). Some of these teams have interdepartmental members while others have intradepartmental staff. Successful teams have a concrete blueprint and that contributes to their effective functioning. There are several factors that affect these teams irrespective of the level. The factors comprise the presence of a clear task, separation from non-team members, authority, and stability. The factors like working conditions, team process and bridging the gaps are concerns for the executive level. The complexity of the task, individual skills and their diverse specializations affect the selection of the team members. The team’s meaningful interactions decide their success. Independent teams can help promote friendly competition within the organization and lead to better staff performance. An efficient leader can design and launch an effective team through careful planning and selection of the right members. Clear responsibilities and roles, the structure of the team, job descriptions, competencies, accountabilities, resources, tools and equipment should all be provided. Problem solving, communicating, managing conflicts, tasks, planning meetings, performance evaluation, managing change and decision making should follow clear procedures ensuring effective team working. Positive relationships, mutual respect and trust, continuing support and inclusion, valuing diversity and listening to feedback can overcome challenges to effective team performance. A strong credible leader with clear expectations can also overcome challenges to an effective team.

Working in a team is an important responsibility by understanding each other’s role which may include doctor, nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist and many more. Team members divide the work based on their scope practice such as acute care, metal health care, homecare etc. Interprofessional collaboration practice is decision making and communicating between individuals for their patient’s health based on their knowledge and skills. It helps to promote habits, maximizing health resources, leading care to be safer with patient’s satisfaction and Canada’s health care (Kenaszchuk, Reeves, Nicholas, & Zwarenstein, 2010).
In order to collaborate successfully with the other members of the team, they have to ‘work together’. Collaboration implies “working together to achieve something that neither agency could achieve alone” (cited by Biggs in Day, 2006, p9). It involves effective communication and contribution to a common goal – and the health and wellbeing of the patient and shared responsibility of the outcome. Each team requires a quality leader, regular meetings attended by all members, joint assessment, regular reviews of patient records which should include ‘shared care plans’; joint decisions following consultation and task delegation to individual team members with the outcome being that “care must be structured, organised and systematically provided to each person in a variety of ways” (Creating an Interprofessional Workforce, 2007, p10).

Team participation is a fundamental aspect of health care and continues to be instilled in people in order to ensure seamless operations and effective organizations . When an organization comes together and functions as a unit and acts as part of a team, job performance is more efficient and results in positive outcomes. Health care leaders should strive to support and encourage team participation on all levels to create efficiencies within the workplace through cooperation and sharing (Dye, 2010). When team participation takes place, productivity increases and organizational missions, visions, and goals are met.
