Ender Wiggin, the third in a family of child geniuses, is selected by international military forces to save the world from destruction. Before being chosen Ender wears a unique monitor that allows the heads of the military to see things as Ender does. Ender's brother Peter and his sister Valentine also wore this monitor, although neither was selected, nor did they have it for as long as Ender, and Peter will never forgive Ender for this. Peter hates Ender, and even when the monitor is taken out it does nothing to decrease Peter's anger. The same is true of Ender's schoolmates, and he is forced into brutally beating the leader of a gang of bullies in order to protect himself. Although Valentine tries to protect Ender from Peter, he is only …show more content…
Ender is abruptly promoted to Salamander Army. There Ender is befriended by Petra Arkanian, the only girl in the army. The army commander, Bonzo Madrid, does not like Ender and does not want him around. Ender practices with Petra and begins to teach his launch group what he knows. Ender helps the army by disobeying Bonzo, who hates Ender, but fortunately Ender is traded to Rat Army. Ender is put in Dink Meeker's platoon. Dink is an excellent toon leader, and Ender does well in battles. He continues teaching his Launchies, even though this causes resentment among other soldiers. Ender gets into a fight and he hurts four older boys who attack him. It is clear to Ender that the teachers are leaving him to fend for himself.
Meanwhile, Peter has convinced Valentine that it is time for them to assert themselves. Peter has unlimited ambition, and he is intelligent enough to try to manipulate world events. Valentine agrees to work with him because she wants their impact to be a positive one. Disguised on the information networks they soon begin to exert an influence. By this time Ender is nine years old and a platoon leader in Phoenix Army under Petra's command. Everyone respects his brilliance and his practice sessions are attended by many, but he is depressed and is stuck in the mind game. Colonel Graff comes to visit Valentine and has her write Ender
Ender is using his old experiences to teach his army, which shows him intelligent. When he was practicing alone or sometimes with Petra, he learned many moves and tricks, and now when he is a commander he can use those experiences to teach his army how to play better. Ender is being smart. He is been learning from other people and when he has his army he can use those tricks, so they can be better soldiers. He is making his army strong enough, and that shows that Ender is being smart. However, Ender never knows why he has been isolated and manipulated by Graff. For example, Ender thought that if you are a leader/commander you should isolate or manipulate only one person in your army, just because they are smart. One day Ender was talking to Bean and said, “Graff had isolated me to make me struggle, to make me prove, not that I was competent, but that I am for better than everyone else. That’s what I am doing to you, Bean. I am hurting you to make you a batter soldier in every way.” (167). Ender thought that what all commanders do. They always push one soldier, so they can make him/her a good commander in future. As he is doing to Bean. Ender never knows why Graff had isolated and manipulated him. These are some reasons that makes Ender a blended character in the novel Ender’s
The novel Ender’s Game is written by Orson Schott Card. It is about a young boy who is sent to battle school. He meets friends and makes adversaries. In battle school, out in space, Ender, the young boy is a genius and is taught many tactics to destroy their prime enemy the buggers. He excels in school and battles his way into command school before the required age. There he is told he is battling buggers in simulations or is he? Throughout the novel, Ender is manipulated, bullied, and isolated, which creates many themes and messages. In this novel Ender’s Game the main theme is life is a game. Three characters that best prove this are Ender, Peter, and Bonzo.
Ender is more advanced than his whole class, despite being a Third (a social status level that is used as a derogatory term). Speculatively, this could be due to his involvement with the government or more likely (and a mentioned character), Valentine. Also, Ender seems to put on a gruff and tough exterior. However, when left to himself, he shows his soft side where he displays his true emotions.
Take my monitor, and I am just like Peter. "(1,8)Here Ender is reflecting on his recent behaviour when he encountered Stilson and his gang. He is worried his personality is becoming more and more similar to Peter since his monitor got removed, and devastated by this fact he cries and regrets what he did to Stilson, something Peter never would have done.
Staying out of conformity by being a unique person, even if it means someone won’t like that person lets that person be an original person. When Ender, the main character from Ender’s Game, tries to be an average kid, he never lives up to his full potential. Valentine’s original voice is more powerful then sounding like someone else. When Ender realizes that Peter, his older brother, won’t accept him even if his is average, he strives to be himself.
One reason why this is true is because Peter and Ender are working with two different commanders. Peter is commanding with. And Ender is commanding with Graff and soon became a commander himself. And then Ender has always been nicer than Peter especially to his sister Valentine. Ender views himself as an independent commander and doesn’t need any help from anyone else.
“Hey third, we’re talkin to you, Third, hey bugger lover, we’re talkin to you.” (Card. 6). In the beginning Stilson (a bully) comes up to Ender with a group of guys. They surround him and start to bully him. At first Ender takes it, then Stilson swings at him, and we see Ender break out of his shell. Ender not only beats him, but we find out he killed him. This is where we see Ender realize what he is capable of. After the fight, we see Ender go back to his quiet self. “Again a blow to the head. Go away Ender thought.I didn’t do anything to you.” (Card. 32). Another group of boys start
Ender’s experience as commander in Battle School teaches him that being strict will help his army win games. When first being assigned commander, Ender knows that he needs to treat the Launchies just like how he was treated. This means that he needs to incorporate discipline on his new Launchies. While they are dressing, Ender orders them to run to the practice room, and when some of them don’t dress quickly enough, he yells, “Dress faster next time… next week the rule is two minutes” (158). Right from the start, Ender takes a gamble and utilizes strong disciplinary tactics on his rookies. Ender knows that his true potential was only reached after being pushed to his limits. Therefore, he attempts to exploit this same objective with the Launchies. The tactics can only be considered effective if demonstrated in the game scores, however. Ender and his Dragon Army experience many victories following their many grueling practice sessions. Following the games, “Dragon Army had fought seven battles in seven days. The score stood 7 wins and 0 losses” (186). Ender finds out that his rigorous training sessions produced a perfect army who wins every game. Ender pushes his Launchies to their absolute limit and later is able to face an expert army. Through his skillful leadership, Ender teaches his rookies how to meet the challenges of the
Although Ender has already drawn conclusions about the deceit towards him, Dink Meeker plants a seed in Ender's head about what he thinks the battle school's about and what he thinks the teachers are doing. At this point, Ender starts seeing another side to things; and even though Ender realizes and admits to himself what the teachers are doing and that he is being manipulated and tricked, he still continues onward.
While the distance separates them, the specific dynamics of their relationship fade into the background, but if Ender were to suddenly return to earth, even five years later, even as a war hero, Peter would likely treat him just the same, because Peter doesn’t change. At the conclusion of the novel, Valentine takes it into her own hands to ensure that Ender never returns to earth, knowing that Peter, now gaining power in politics, would use and manipulate his famous younger brother to give himself further sway. This remains true because “the id… does not change with time” which has also proven true for Peter in other instances (McLeod). With Ender gone, the Wiggin family moves away, much to Valentine’s chagrin. She wonders how Ender is meant to come home, to find them, when home is no longer where it once was. Simultaneously, Valentine knows exactly why the family has moved: “It was for Peter, so that living among trees and small animals, so that nature, in as raw a form as Mother and Father could conceive of it, might have a softening influence on their strange and frightening son” (Card 151). The Wiggin parents had hoped that the calm serenity of nature might find root in Peter, and as far as they are concerned, it did. Upon moving, Peter seems better than before. He does well in school; he does not torment his classmates.
Ender Wiggin was a timid boy who wanted to have his brother and parents to love him. Prior to joining the Battle School, Ender did not have the belligerence that he would soon possess. He did not want to be like Peter, so
He believes Ender is naive compared to him. This quote from the book talks about how even the teachers are manipulators and liars, Ender realizes this and shuts himself out to everyone but his closest friends and Valentine. Finally, Ender
The Three Most Influential People in Ender’s Life In the award-winning novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card there are many characters that influence Ender throughout his travels. Ender is influenced in one way or another by just about every person he comes into contact with. Most of these influences, however, are very subtle and do not make a direct or dramatic change in his life. There are three main people that Ender spends a lot of time with that influence him the most.
In the book Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, it starts with ender in school and being made fun of. After he beats up a bully, he goes home to deal with his brother Peter who also bullies him because Ender is a better specimen than Peter was. But what no one expected was that a representative from the military came to invite Ender to Battle School up in space. Ender accepted and went to live up in Battle School for years to come. At first, Ender was hated for being such a talented student at the age of six but was soon respected after he was able to beat all the other armies with just a bunch of little kids. Ender became the best soldier at Battle School and was moved up to Command School where he would learn to command
Ender’s brother and sister had a very big influence on Ender, if it weren’t for them being so smart the International Fleet wouldn’t have authorized Ender’s birth and if it weren’t for Peter he wouldn’t have known how to cry silently and Valentine helped him cope with Peter while also teaching him how to love and helping him when he visits Earth right before going to Command School.
