Enterprise Data Management and Administration
02/2013
Abstract
This report examines the emergence of U-commerce and the implications on data management it’s faced with. Through research of real cases, the paper will examine how U-commerce has been implemented into the operations of businesses and the roles that it plays. It will also provide basic examples of the four elements which make up U-commerce, Ubiquitous, Universal, Unique, and Unison. The paper will address the importance and growing concern of data management of this technology. Enterprise data has never been more accessible to users and across devices than it is now. Assuring the right data makes it to the right places and people, can be very critical to a business’s operations or decision strategies. With a multitude of devices with various interfaces, U-commerce’s data management stability, and privacy is continuously at risk and monitored. The paper will provide a sound rational for why today’s businesses need to make sure that data management is a top priority, as they move into new phases of outlets for doing business, and share business related information.

Up until this point, Third Star Financial Services has operated via a succession of mergers and acquisitions where systems were inherited but never integrated into the network. Its data management has been virtually non-existent and entirely ineffective. Evidence of this can be found in the absence of an enterprise-wide data management solution and the presence of several disparate systems operating independently with no measurable benefit to the company. Due to a lack of actionable data, management makes decisions based on instinct rather than through analysis. A direct consequence of this is a steadily declining market share and loss of high-level employees to competing companies. Fortunately, this discrepancy has been identified and Third Star executives have established the new goal of modernizing and streamlining operations. Using concepts outlined by the Data Management Association (DAMA), this proposed enterprise architecture will allow Third Star to transform their data from a liability to an asset.
Behind E-commerce, the driving force is linked with the arrival of commercial Internet technology use, particularly the World Wide Web (WWW). The privacy issues bring forth much needed attention, especially for developed countries. Evolution of technology to the point that has comprehensive profiles of people can be created and disseminated at exceptional levels. Technology has considerably changed the link between merchants and customers, and tipped the balance favouring online merchants’ commercial interest against privacy interest of the customers. This alteration has left the online consumers especially vulnerable, subject to harm, and their rights to privacy are
We are at the forefront of an information revolution. Firms are increasingly relying on data to drive strategic and business decisions. Upstart companies are giving market leaders a run for their money by tapping into advanced data analytics, statistical modeling and open source software. Multi-billion dollar companies like Uber and Airbnb have shown a groundbreaking data-driven way to connect its products & services to their customers. We are living in a world where every customer touch point with a digital device is being recorded and monetized. Every business has to reinvent, transform, and adapt its products and services to meet the demand of its digital savvy customers or face the risk of becoming obsolete.
The constant technology environmental changes have changed the way companies operate and consumers purchase products. Companies must stay abreast of new ways to advertise their products and make service fast, efficient, and reliable. Consumers are now looking for ways to order and pay for products with ease thru the use of apps, and smart phones. If companies do not fit their product in some form in the palm of the consumers hand thru their phone they will

A Data Model is the practice of developing a model that defines all the level entities of an enterprise at a logical level, how they relate to one another, their life cycles, the services and systems that act upon it, and the places of the entity’s application in the enterprise. An Enterprise Data Model (EDM) also defines each entity’s attributes and forms the ground of a common language in an enterprise (Rob, Coronel, & Crocke, 2008). This paper develops and illustrates a comprehensive enterprise data model for a particular group of choice in Wild Wood Apartments. The department of interest in the organization is the Administration Department and in particular the managerial level that manages the apartments. The paper further articulates the rules of operation within the department to allow for an application model. Finally, there is rule reflection, i.e. assessing the extent to which the data model reflects on the operating rules of the organization.
Big Toys for Big Boys is a retail and wholesale electronics and recreational products business. Recently we have decided to expand the business to e-commerce retail operations, as the Chief Information Officer the venture comes with a new set of challenges that as a company we need to make ensure that there are set policies procedures and a structure in place to protect our consumers and the company. The issue we now face it maintaining the quality of data, and with the growth of our business stemming the potential for data compromises. Data governance and data stewardship is the forefront of our growing business the goal is to expand the IT department and form a department that is solely dedicated to this.
Enterprise view of data is required to maximize the efficiency of the organization as a whole (csu, n.d.). The sharing of data and maintaining the transparency is achieved by integrating the data within the system. Integrating the data is a complex task as there is always certain information that is sensitive and it is not meant to be shared with each and every department or individual working within or outside the organization. Making enterprise data strategy demands administrators to understand that the data is critical and is an asset to the organization. Wayne Eckerson describes enterprise view of data as the enterprise data strategy built by the organization to have a successful growth rate plan. He also points out that only one in 10 organizations have such sort of strategy as most of them don’t put together the required soft skills that are needed to manage change incurred by the strategy and the investment for data management techniques and tools to certify the delivery of high quality and consistent data supported with business initiatives and strategies (Eckerson, 2011). Most of the organizations face a lot of difficulties in maintaining the data quality. The cost of data quality incurred is much higher and it sometimes contributes to forty percent of the problems related to IT in a corporation this problem occurs because of the inaccurate data (steria, 2012). One major issue when creating an enterprise view
Rainforest started 10 years ago in a small warehouse staffing five employees, creating specialty widgets for its clients. Dedication to delivering the best possible experience for its customers has allowed Rainforest to grow substantially with retail outlets in 22 different states within the U.S. The recent acquisition of XYZ widgets, an online widget retailer, has poised Rainforest to expand into a global market. The acquisition and consolidation of two software of two software systems, including the expansion into a global market will present a challenge to the leadership of Rainforest, but these challenges can be handled in an effective and efficient manner using an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system.
Information when rightly put in use can cease the market. For instance, with the rise of smart phone purchases, transactions through mobile phones and tablets have increased steeply like ever before. Since 2011, when number of mobile phones and tablets outnumbered the number of laptops, customer buying behavior evolved to using mobile applications. In the era, where
The amount of data created by people every year has gone up significantly in the past few years. In 2015, there was 7.9 zettabytes of data created worldwide, and that amount is expected to grow to 35 zettabytes by 2020 (Lee, 2016). The increased popularity of smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices in recent years have contributed to the growing amount of data being created. Businesses see this data as a way to improve their fortunes and are coming up with ways to profit from this data. To obtain the data in order to utilize it, businesses collect or purchased data that consumers create on the internet. Critics of this collection of data believe that these businesses collecting the data are acting unethical for invading the privacy of consumers (Lavandera & Morris, 2012). However, considering all the relevant laws, guidelines, and the impact on society as a whole in a deontology and utilitarian viewpoint, the collection of data for commercial use is ethical.
Enterprise systems are highly complex systems providing solutions to various enterprises. However, implementation of these systems is difficult and high costing that places tremendous demands on enterprise time and resources. Many systems implementations are success and failures, as they sometimes meet organizations roles or sometimes not. This article identifies need of enterprise systems, success factors, software selection strategy, causes of failures that are critical for any enterprise along with case studies.

M-commerce offers benefits such as quick access to time sensitive information and instant connectivity to the internet. It also enables businesses to offer personalized and localized content as mobile devices enable them to have access to consumer’s preferences, status and location. M-commerce plays a key role in expanding the audience of a business on a massive scale, especially in developing countries where most people access the internet on mobile devices because they cannot afford a PC.
