The destructive use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also ineffective. Animal testing is a traditional approach to studying how human and animal bodies work. Many scientists who use animals debate that there is no other way to achieve their scientific purposes, and that any pain or distress caused to the animals is outweighed by the benefits of the research. However, is putting the lives of innocent, helpless animals worth it so that someone can enjoy a cosmetic product? On average over 115 million rabbits, dogs, cats, mice, and other animals are burned, poisoned and killed in painful experiments each year for the sake of cosmetics and toiletries. Although many people agree with testing products on animals, they ask ‘Who else are we going to test our products on?’ Nobody! Don’t add harsh chemicals in the products and then the animals and humans are both healthier. Beyond millions of animals that die and are captured every year just from animal testing alone. Treating an animal cruelty is never okay, especially when they’re torturing the animals with harsh chemicals due to testing. If people would stand up and try to protect animals we’d be saving certain animals from becoming extinct and we’d also save a ton of money.

Imagine being born, only to live a life of torture. You are brought to a lab, and cruelly tested on against your will. Toxins poured into your eyes, painful injections to your skin, then left to die when you’re no longer useful. Although many do not realize it, people use products tested on animals in their everyday lives. For girls, many of your favorite makeup brands, such as Estee Lauder, Makeup Forever, and Maybelline take part in animal testing. Products such as toothpaste, cologne, deodorant, laundry detergent, razors, and even band-aids aren’t tested innocently, either. As a makeup enthusiast, I am passionate about how the products I use daily are tested. Today I will help you understand what animal testing is and how it started, how it’s currently affecting animals around the world, and what organizations are doing to help make a difference in the future. Animals can be burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused as a result of testing. And the list could go on forever. The way animals are being mistreated and tested on should be against the law. There is a different ways to do research other than killing and abusing animals. There are many alternate test that scientist can use to do there research without harming animals. Alternative test are defined as test that use the three “R’s”, a test that replaces a procedure that uses animals with one that doesn’t, a test that reduces the number of animals used in a procedure, and test that refine a procedure to cause less pain to the animal.(11 Facts about…)

Animal testing is a huge problem. The methods used to test on them are dangerous and cruel. To measure the toxic effects, animals are forced to swallow or inhale massive quantities of a test substance or have the chemical smeared in their eyes and on their skin. This makes the animals endure severe abdominal pain, convulsions, seizures, paralysis and extreme internal and external bleeding. These horrific things happen to the animals before they are killed and eventually die from all the chemicals and toxins put on and in them. That is why animal testing is a big problem.

Throughout history, beginning as early as 500 BC, animals have been used to test out products that will later be utilized by humans (“Animal Testing” 4), what isn’t publicly discussed about is the way it will leave the animals after the process is done. Many innocent rabbits, monkeys, mice, and even popular pets such as dogs are harmed during the testing application of cosmetics, medicine, perfumes, and many other consumer products (Donaldson 2). Nevertheless, there are many people whom support the scandal because "it is a legal requirement to carry out animal testing to ensure they are safe and effective” for human benefit (Drayson). The overall question here is should it even be an authorized form of experimentation in the United States, or anywhere else? The fact of the matter is that there are alternatives to remove animals out of the equation for good (“Alternatives to Animal Testing” 1). They are cheaper, and less invasive than the maltreatment of the 26 million innocent animals that are subjected to the heartlessness of testing each year (“Animal Testing” 4). With all things considered, animal testing should be looked upon as animal cruelty due to the harsh effects from the many products tested on the innocent.

Alas, as a frequently ignored and disguised problem, it isn’t often we look at our makeup bag and think to ourselves how many innocent animals have actually been harmed in the production of our favourite cosmetic products. These tests cause issues that debate the ethics and humaneness of intentionally harming the animals to sell any new product. After testing, some animals are killed for no more reason than to clear space, while other animals are injured and live the remainder of their lives in captivity. An opinion poll was taken by HSUS in 2001 that asked the general population about their feelings on pain and harm done to animals during research. The results showed 62% would approve testing if animals experienced little or no pain while 75% disapprove when severe pain is experienced. The intention of animal experiments is not to harm the animals, but that is what it does. Evidence that shows that animals cannot be relied on for information and research. There are also cases where products and drugs will never be approved by the FDA and sold to the public. This is expressed significantly by those against animal testing because of the simple fact that the animal died with no contribution to people. Another negative to this field are the high costs just to maintain the animals and keep them alive on top of the money used to conducts the tests. To start off, animal testing is promoting the cruelty of experimenting on animals and no one realizes that both animals and people can both suffer. Just because animals cannot do somethings that humans can it doesn’t allow us to make the animals get tested on and let them suffer. The concept of using animals as though their lives are disposable is a way that many people are raised. They are taught that animals are here for our use to eat and harvest their resources to better our own lives. The concept of having pets complicates this thought process, as pets are considered to be integral parts of a family and laws surrounding abuse towards these furrier members of a family prove the previous statement to seem false. Our society has made a hypocrisy around which animals are friends and which are not. The animal rights movement challenges society and its double sided behaviour towards animals. Often times, once people learn about animal abuse committed by a person or company, they are immediately horrified. This is because most people feel compassion, and sympathize with the animals. Most people’s opinions around the use of animals for testing products are changed when they realize how much abuse goes on behind the scenes. Me personally, before the research I regarded animal testing as a necessity in order to ensure the most safe product. However, after learning about animal testing my opinion has changed. I acknowledge the scientific research supporting animal testing, however the ethics of how the animals are treated makes me disagree with the practise. It really changed my opinion on animal testing. Have you ever gotten a shot? Well, if you have before you know how unpleasant they are. Imagine that the shot/medicine wasn’t even made for you and it was made for animals, that wouldn’t be good for our body’s right? Well, that’s what some animals have to go through every day in animal testing. Think about how much harm the medicine is doing to the animals and their body. Would you want medicine that’s made for animals! I wouldn’t and so why should animals have to get medicine that is made for humans! That is why I think animal testing should be banned from the U.S. because millions of animals die a year because of animal testing and about 75% of the medicine that is tested on animals fails to work on humans

Animal testing has started long back in the ancient Greek times. Greek physician Galen dissected animals, this became known as vivisection, which he studied. Since then animal testing has long grew. Over the many years our people have been either against or with animal testing. Animal testing has been an issue that has been occurring for many years and will continue into our future. Over the years our culture has created organizations for people both sides of this topic trying to convince others to be choosing a side. We the people are now able to make our own decision on which side we want to be on.

As it is known, testing chemicals are bad and dangerous. Certain products, such as hair dyes, cosmetics, and medicinal chemicals can be harmful to humans. Scientists decided to test it on animals. For hundreds and hundreds of years, animals have been used for testing. It is something humans have thought was better for them to use animals instead of humans. It is not any better to do this because there are innocent animals dying during procedures to make makeup products and hair dye. Between one hundred million to one hundred fifty million animals, including birds, mice, rats, fish, rabbits, etc. are tested on every year (PETA). Animal testing is very cruel and should not be allowed. It should be illegal because the animals are left in some gruesome situations, the procedures leave some animal either dead or hurting until they die, and could harm other animals.
