To incoming students in the construction management discipline., the three types of research that will be described in this paper are scholarly journals, trade journals and popular magazines, these will also be accompanied with examples of a research topics. Students can use these researching strategies for the following: essays, lab reports, reviews, and annotations. Knowledge of these resources will ensure success in the program. Sustainability is becoming an ongoing trend in construction. This word in reference to construction means to be built sturdy while not depleting the environment around it. According to Lafargeholcum Foundations [1], “Sustainability is one of the worlds most talked about but least understood words, its meaning …show more content…
Managing and implementing sustainability requires the commitment of all stakeholders and new ways of working, thinking and learning. [4]” The paper highlights the importance of a coordinated supply chain action in the construction sector and emphasizes the need for construction companies to train and invest in resource- efficient building methods and practices. This will manage the balance between stability and change [4].
The second journal I selected is Open House International, this journal writes of subjects of architecture and housing and urban planning. The article chosen from this journal is titled, Indicators of Sustainable Construction in Eco-Urban. Its main focus is introducing sustainable construction and identifies important indictors of sustainability. This article Goes into detail about eco-cities, which are ones that utilize all the critical elements of the environment and focuses on the efficient use of raw materials and power consumption during the life of a building [5]. Also goes into details how the exploitation of resources is a big factor in sustainability. The second journal is similar to the first journal in the fact that they are both pro-sustainable construction. Both papers go into detail about how implementing sustainable building would effect economic and environmental aspects of the process. They both go into detail about how import it is to move towards sustainable construction.

This manifesto proposes an approach to sustainable design that I am interested in exploring during my time studying architecture. The idea of sustainability is a complex one, not without apparent contradictions. This makes it difficult to define in a wholly satisfactory manner. For the purposes of this manifesto I will advert to the definition proposed by Jason McLennan who asserts that sustainable design: “seeks to maximize the quality of the built environment, while minimizing or eliminating negative impact to the natural environment.” I find this definition particularly useful in the emphasis which it places on quality. By quality, in this
Over the past few years, the construction industry has been changing dramatically. One of the most important stages in the construction management and business management is the planning phase. They share similar two main levels of planning which are the strategic and operational planning. However, business management planning to decide in advance what should be done, and how to do it, when you do and you are done. On the other hand, Construction management strategic planning is to deal with selection on a high level of overall objective of the project, including the scope, procurement methods, schedules and financing options but the planning of operations, including the
"Sustainable Architecture" - this phrase in recent years is mentioned a lot. The concept of "sustainable architecture" is associated, even identified with the concept of green architecture, ecological architecture, environmentally friendly, energy efficient ... to reach a stable value for the environment human life, reduce negative impacts on the environment in the present and future. However, although this interpretation is correct, but only one aspect, because that's what people are missing and need to achieve. Try to reach and understanding of sustainable architecture in general and more simple ...
1. Name and briefly describe each of the two basic types of competitively bid construction contracts. Which type would be most likely used for building the piers to support a large suspension bridge. Why?
Construction Management is the overall planning, outlook, coordination, budget and control of a construction project from start to finish. Without them, construction projects would be very unorganized and chaotic. They make sure projects run smoothly and efficiently. They work with electricians, plumbers, carpenters and general contractors to produce the safest and best way to complete the project for the customer. Being a construction manager is a good job because they help many people build what they need.
The paper is aimed at identifying the definition of sustainability and studying several general principles relevant to civil engineering. A case study of the regeneration of Mossley Mill in Northern Ireland which covers the rebuilding and reuse technology will be given below for detailed research. This kind of technology is not only a typical solution which meets the concept of sustainability, but also a classical paradigm in the civil engineering area. It is further suggested that the case contains several principles which are the specific branches of the general principles. Also, as a contemporary development, the use and re-use of building and land related to the building are of significant meaning in maintaining
I am interested in undertaking construction project management because some of the modules undertaken during my study are in common with this master's program. Some of those modules are: construction technology, principles of management, contract administration, professional practice, environment studies and financial accounting. I would like to develop my knowledge and understanding the management of construction project, as a quantity surveyor, this will enable me to perform my work professionally. During my short period working in construction industry, I realized how the industry is multidisciplinary, it involves many people with different background, and it is hard to manage, coordinate and communicate with people at all levels. Communication is almost always named as the second important skill by project managers and team members. Thus it is essential to gain skills and knowledge in managing people and the organization. A quantity surveyor should emphasize on contract management while running a
Construction projects are always unique and risks raise from a number of the different sources. Construction projects are inherently complex and dynamic, and involving multiple feedback processes. A lot of participants – individuals and organizations are actively involved in the construction project, and they interests may be positively or negatively affected as a result of the project execution or project completion. Different participants with different experience and skills usually have different expectations and interests. This naturally creates problems and confusion for even the most experienced project managers and contractors.
Construction Management is the organization, coordination; planning and the process of overseeing a building project from the start of that project to the end. Construction management is carried out by managers who supervise building projects and all the work involved so as to achieve a client's goal or meet his expectation. He works together with other people in the project like the structural engineer, contractors and the architect so as to produce a functional and viable project. For this to be achieved, the people involved need to observe a certain level of personal and professional ethics so as to achieve the goals. Ethics is a set of moral principles through which a person's actions may be judged either as good or bad or as right or wrong. Ethics can either be personal those that guide one's personal actions, or professional, these guide one's actions while in practice. This is what construction management is all about.
Sustainability, a common vocab being used in design industry nowadays. It is mean to design something with a well consideration of improve environment, people and economic, which has become the fundamental aspect when comes to initiate the design thinking. According to Oxford Institute for sustainable development, the tools to measure and construct sustainable urban development are prejudicial focus on environmental and economic aspects. Most of the time, ecological and economical sustainability are well concerned but Social sustainable, which merely shown or mentioned on any press or architect’s forum. This essay will talk about the social sustainability in design, by defining the social sustainability in design, the key elements of the
With the rapid change of the world, thought of management, theory and practise keeps on changing. It has been transformed through innovation. Taking into consideration the uncertainty surrounding the construction industry, it is essential paying attention to how people work within an organisation that has set goals that needs to be achieved. To be able to achieve these objectives, it is necessary to understand management relating issues such as culture, motivation, leadership and issues relating like coordinating, planning and controlling. Understanding the way people and organisations work is very vital when it comes to the built environment. As a Quantity Surveyor some of my duties are to deals with people, technical
As people known, to use renewable resource and to save energy or comfortable indoor environment is far from the overall picture. Because construction mentioned above is an industry which include many aspects such as land use and application of advanced technology, etc. Therefore if we want to define what is green building we should recognize the whole industrial chain included each aspects and unintended environment, social, economic, consequence brought possibly of complex activity. Kats (2003) in his article stated that the sustainable or green building should deal with those key points: environment, resource & energy consumption, impact on people, financial impact and the world at large which is a broader set of issues such as ground water recharge or global warming, as well governmental policies are typically concerned about (Kats, 2003, P. 1). And another institute, Office of the federal Environmental Executive (2003) defined green building as the practice of increasing the efficiency with which
Abstract: With the development of the city construction, the investment in construction is increasingly expanding. However, the construction is large-scale and the number of construction project still under construction is amazing. The projects quality problems have taken place on a national scale with some extent of the damage. In order to ensure the construction projects went well, it is necessary to strictly supervise the whole process of construction project from supervision department. Keyword: construction supervision, construction quality, the develop actuality.
The construction industry much like other industries is dependant with the distribution of “scarce resources” (Drake,1994). Many of its resources known as the factors or production i.e. labour, capital, land etc. are limited (Gregory-Mankiw, 2008), however, wants and desires within the industry are infinite (Myers, 2013). Kishtainy notes that this creates two problems; at any given time, there will be a fixed number of resource, against numerous wants. Sloman 2003 adds that in an effort to rectify this, he argues that we must make choices, in terms of choices within the construction industry Myers suggested that firms need to considered their investments made, how they construct and for whom they construct for.
