The community partners will be the guide to understanding the culture, values, and practices of the target community. Cultural sensitivity must be factored in when conducting research data collection. Researchers must develop cultural competency when working with the community, to build a strong and trusting relationship. One method of data collection would be observing the community by walking through the streets, interacting with the community members, and documenting the observations every day either in the form of recording or writing.12 Interviewing the target population, women and their families, and the healthcare providers, would enlighten our understanding regarding the health disparities present in the community, the healthcare …show more content…
The responses can be projected on to a screen so that everyone in the group can be in concordance with the statement.14 However, these interactions can be successful only if people do not withhold information out of fear of retribution. To resolve this problem, the researcher needs a window into the community through the help of a community supporter throughout the meetings or group discussions.
One method of data dissemination is concept mapping of the data collected into graphs or maps, and presenting it to the main community members during group discussions. The main community members serve as a relaying tool to publish the data content to the rest of the community. They become the advocates of the project and its significance to the community. Thus, data dissemination will be successful only with the community member's and the government's interest and understanding regarding the significance of the project and its interventions.

The ideal design for my Community-based participatory research project would be the Executive authority model.15 The executive authority would be the researchers (including myself) of the project. The thinking group will include the stakeholders and the
As nurses we know medical professionals more than ever are responsible for treating large diverse populations. Understanding cultural differences in various populations is crucial to produce positive outcomes. Nurses have a major role in health care promotion. Nurses should be treating the patient as a whole in mind, body, and spirit. This should be included in community treatment too. Individual, family, environment, and community assessments are necessary to provide the care and improve health care outcomes in the community as a whole. The World Health Organization’ s (WHO) definition of community is “a group of
The Heritage Assessment Tool can be adopted as a dependable tool to gauge, health maintenance, restoration and safeguard of personal, cultural beliefs. The adoption of health assessment tool helps meet the prerequisites of diverse patient populations to offer quality all-inclusive care. The following paper reviews the assessment of three culturally dissimilar families, and demonstrate how a nurse would continue with health promotion centred on the variances in health traditions between the three cultures. The three cultures include Hispanic culture, Native American Indian culture and White American culture. The objectives of this essay are
I have learned that it is important that educators and health providers be trained on cultural competency to understand the population they are serving. Marks, Sims, and Osher (King, Sims, & Osher, n.d.) define cultural competency as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross–cultural situations" ( as cited in Cross et al., 1989; Isaacs & Benjamin, 1991). Health providers and educators should investigate demographic patterns or trends in the place where they live and work. This brings awareness of the types of cultures that they might come across when they are working with people. Organizations should integrate and implement policies that promote the value of diversity, self-assessment, manage the dynamics of difference, acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge, and adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of communities they serve (Georgetown University, 2004). Georgetown University (2004) also stresses that culture competency grows gradually and is always open for improvement.
It is know that the patient’s community or cultural group can have significant impact on a person’s health. Therefore, health care practitioners are faced with more challenges that include outside sources and they need to be willing to change their treatments to address the other sources.
Cultural competence in health care describes the ability to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors, including tailoring health care delivery to meet patients’ social, cultural and linguistic needs. The need for healthcare systems to increase cultural competence and personalize care for ethnic patient minorities should not be ignored. Healthcare systems should promote better understanding and communication between diverse ethnic patients and caregivers. Hospitals should design a system that caters to the needs of all the populations they serve and not just apply a one-size-fits-all approach. Becoming a culturally competent health care organization is a critical component in reducing health care disparities.
I am confident that the CDC/CSTE Epidemiology Fellowship would continue to stimulate my interests, and help me apply my studies and past experiences into real world health problems. I hope to help design research studies and collect and analyze data. Most importantly, I want to be able to interpret my results accurately and speak confidently on those results in order to make bigger changes in minority populations. This fellowship will enhance my leadership ability and increase my capability to advance successfully. If this fellowship selects me, it will receive an optimistic, enthusiastic, and intellectually curious individual who has an expertise in the effects of culture on health
With a growing and diverse United States population, pursuing the goal of cultural competence in the workforce and health-care system emerges as a leading strategy in reducing disparities. Cultural competency, is defined as the ability of health-care providers to function effectively in the context of cultural differences (IOM, 2001). As a healthcare administrator it is important to employ several initiatives to increase the cultural competency within the workforce including the recruitment and retention of minority staff as well as providing training to increase cultural awareness, knowledge and skills. Another strategy to employ in strengthening the relationship between the patient and provider is to create buy-in from community leaders and stakeholders when launching initiatives geared toward the reduction of health disparities. One example of this type of approach is the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) projects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). REACH projects aim to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities in minority communities. For example, a 2010 study by Liao et. al., documented overall decreasing trends in the prevalence of smoking among men in Asian communities served by the REACH project. By engaging the communities that they serve and forming community partnerships, projects such as REACH can be been successful in targeting health behaviors and consequently reducing health disparities in communities of
Being culturally competent and delivering culturally sensitive care is imperative for anyone in the medical profession. It is important because of the many diversities faced every day in the health care field. However, simply understanding the fact that there are so many health disparities is not enough. In order to reach out and effectively care for patients of different backgrounds and cultures one must understand the importance of cultural competency. In order to be culturally competent, a nurse must have knowledge of the different cultures, and
This in turn can facilitate population involvement and assist in development of a plan and its expected outcomes.
In order to provide the Australia Park Victoria with the appropriate data to solve its current crisis, the most appropriate method of data collection for this research is the qualitative method. According to Gay and Airasian (p 627) qualitative method is the collection of extensive data on various variables over a long time in a natural setting with an aim of acquiring insights not possible using other methods. It involves three different kinds of information collection: direct observation, in depth and open-ended interviews and written documents. Qualitative method involves use of random sampling and structured data collection instruments that fit different experiences. The method also enables the researcher to study the specific area of

In general, there are several methods for data collection and the different data collection methods provided its own advantages and disadvantages (Sekaran 2003, p. 223). For carrying out the data collection, the appropriate methods should be applied. In the research, the data collection could be done through the interview, for example, face-to-face and telephone interview. To collect the data by using interview technique, the questionnaire is commonly employed as the instrument for gathering data, the questionnaire could be able to distribute by mail or electronic mail. In addition, the data collection could be conducted by observation of individuals with or without audio or video recording. Before choosing the methods for data collection the expertise of the researcher, the degree of accuracy required, time and resources must be taken into consideration. Thus,
With the increased and widespread use of technologies, interest in data mining has increased rapidly. Companies are now utilized data mining techniques to exam their database looking for trends, relationships, and outcomes to enhance their overall operations and discover new patterns that may allow them to better serve their customers. Data mining provides numerous benefits to businesses, government, society as well as individual persons. However, like many technologies, there are negative things that caused by data mining such as invasion of privacy right. This paper tries to explore the advantages as well as the disadvantages of data mining. In addition, the ethical and global issues regarding the use of data mining
The behavior was observed from a large sample of people. This included twenty people shopping alone and twenty people shopping in a group, for a total of forty subjects, each ranging in ages from approximately 19 to 40 years old. The subjects were observed from the time they entered the store until the time they left. The reasoning behind this was to see the buying behavior differences for the whole experience and figure out which areas of the store could be improved in order to appeal to groups of people shopping. The behaviors observed included the amount of time spent inside the store, the amount of money spent, the interactions with associates, and the areas of the stores that were navigated.
