I have never had any troubles with homesickness, and I rarely think of home while I am traveling. I’ve been away from home for more than a week and never had any problems. One example was when I spent a week and a half at a summer camp surrounded by people that were complete strangers. I did call home once, but that was because I had certain familial issues happening at the time and I needed to be in contact with my parents. Other than that, I was fine and was bright-eyed and bushy tailed for the rest of the camp. While I never traveled outside of the country as of now, many of my family members have. I am well versed in the ins-and-outs of international travel, and am excited for this opportunity to experience new things and make memories of my time in Belize. I have a growing passion for world travel, and I want to make the most of this opportunity. I will not hamper the group in any way shape or form. I will not make you regret you decision. I wish to thank you for this
Now a day, there are many people leaving their native countries to come to America for life opportunities such as free education. First, in most countries it is very hard for a child to go to school. If your parent doesn’t have money you can’t go to school. For example, I still remember when I was in the age to start school back in my country, I wasn’t able to go because my parent didn’t have money and the school fee was very high. Second, many immigrants chooses to come to American to give their children an opportunities to be able to go to school. They don’t have to worry that their kids would stay home because they don’t have the money to pay, but instance it a joyful moment for them. Moreover, most family choose to come here again because
In our society nowadays, many people take our freedoms for granted. We live our lives as if we had it hard. They complain about all their work, high taxes, bills, corrupt government, and just how terrible people treat one another. Most American citizens believe we should be further ahead and better if you will. “How could we have gotten to this point?” many people ask. What these people don’t realize is how many have sacrificed themselves to help us to get here and make us a better country.
I’m on my way home from school, my mom is driving. The traffic is terrific like it is always in Santo Domingo city. We stop at a red light and a kid wearing decrepit garments and with an unhappy face gets near our car asking for alms. This is not uncommon at all in the Dominican Republic, but every time it happens it breaks my heart. I constantly wonder where these children sleep at night. While the Dominican Republic has exquisite locations to offer, it also has its imperfections like any other place in the world. Political corruption, poverty, lack of education and crime are among the reasons why my parents want to move to the United States—the land of opportunities.
Being an American to me means more than just loving watching baseball and eating apple pie. It's about following the American Dream. The dream of always striving to achieve something better. I once heard a quote from Edward L. Hudgins that reads “An American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it has to offer. Americans look to more than the next meal; they look to the future, the long term, a better tomorrow.” To me this quote means that Americans aren't here to settle, they are here to achieve their dream, the American dream.
The day was finally here. It was November 11, 1990, the day that our family was to go to ¡®Land Of Liberty.¡¯ I heard so many different things about this country called United States of America and I was warned that it would be nothing you¡¯ve expected. The plane ride did not seem as long as it was; partly because I was lost in my own thoughts with hopes and anxiety. I thought about what I will become in this massive country I was headed and how soon I will adapt to this new culture and people.
Life is about making choices, but some of them can even change our life. Two years ago I decided to come to America for my higher studies in Western Kentucky University. Although I knew it was really a challenge to me, this significant decision that I’ve made was going to change everything about my life and me. There are many things in life that can change the course of a person’s life. It can either make a positive impact or a negative impact on a person’s life. It’s always best to have the positive impact though. For me I have had a positive experience that has changed my life forever and that is coming to a different land and culture.
Being an American can mean a number of different things. The most important however, is freedom. As an American citizens, we have freedoms that many others do not. We have the freedom to vote for our president, freedom of speech, religion, and more. Being an American doesn’t just mean you were born in the United States, you can become a citizen by taking a test about our country. Our country is unique because we are made up with people from all around the world. We all have different religions we follow, languages we speak, as well as where we come from. Unlike other countries who might split apart and come up with different names, because of diversity, we embrace our differences.
Transitions are never an easy thing to conquer. It is often hard and stressful to cope with changes to one’s surrounding, but in the cases in which one manages to conquer this obstacle, elevation of knowledge and experience are great results gained from this achievement. I originally came from Africa and recently moved to the United States to join my mother and my step father. This great change in the things I had become accustomed to in my daily life was not easy, furthermore taking into account the fact that I had never experienced a transition so little as shifting from one residence to another.
There are events in life, which can change yourself or your way of thinking. As for me, I think the major change in my life occurred when I moved from France to America. This change has entirely affected my personality. Why? I arrived in the United States during the summer of 2002. It was really hard for me since my parents had only told me about the move in April of that year. Therefore, I did not have the time to prepare myself psychologically. My parents had talked about coming here for a very long time, even before I was born. Everything started in 1973. Indeed, my parents came from Iran to Europe in order to finish their studies and then to return back home. However, even at that time, they had not set their mind as to where they
One thing was certain - I could count on was the advice of my family. Coming from a closely knit community, family support was a surety. They provided the support needed to my many cousins who embarked on this journey before me. No matter what doors being a Hamptonian was about to open, I could never forget them. Their sheer determination to see me succeed at anything I put my mind to provided me with enough motivation for the mission.
There are many significant parts of my life that have had a huge impact on my personality, but there is one that has not only affected me, but has changed me for the better. My personal life changing experience was coming to America. For me, this bridge between my old life and new life is a shaky bridge that I attempted to cross and entered a whole new realm of life which changed everything. The decision about coming to America has taught me how to respect other people, be more responsible, and be more loving towards various friends and families. It has also helped me adapt to the new life that I’m about to begin. It was so unexpected. Out of nowhere my parents broke the news: “We’re going to America!” Living in a big town of Bhopal,
What does it mean to be American? It can be a "loaded" question this day and age, and the answer will vary depending on whom you ask. I am willing to bet that it would be hard to get a consensus even in a small group like our class. I suspect that's because the answer is shaped by many possible variables.
My story starts in the year of 2003, when I decided to follow up on my
What it means to be American? Everybody you ask this question to will have a completely different response. Some responses might have similarities but none will be exactly the same. In the beginning of the year my response was “To be an American means having a rich history, having opportunities to better ourselves, and having freedoms.” Unfortunately not everyone has had the same opportunities or freedoms. Native Americans, who are indigenous, dealt with having their freedoms taken away, less opportunities even though they had rich history in this land before it was taken away from them. Look at what Zitkala-Sa endured. Not only that, but African Americans have fought long and hard for freedom and equality as well. W.E.B. Du Bois stood for
What does being an american mean to me? Being an american means that I have freedom to do things that I want, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which the military fights for. Another thing I have is rights that means that I have choices to pick things that I want to do in life like pick a job or do whatever because of the military fighting for are country. I also have justice which means that things are fair and you have a fair trial if I go to court and can not just go to jail.
