Unless you are an avid viewer of the Food Network or delve very deeply into the world of cake decorating and sugar work, the name Kerry Vincent might not ring a bell. However, I spent my sick days as a small child watching ‘The Food Network Challenge’ and immediately admiring the painfully harsh comments that originated from Kerry Vincent. When given the task of interviewing a person I find to be successful, it didn’t take long before my thoughts turned toward her. Besides being a judge on ‘The Food Network Challenge’, she holds the title of Master Sugar Artist, founded the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show, and assisted in introducing fondant and gum paste to the United States. I was ecstatic to receive an email back inquiring about when the interview would take place. On television, Kerry Vincent can seem harsh, and she is often criticized for being so. If you are a pastry chef at a prestigious kitchen and someone asks you a question about your craft and you cannot give an answer, you will look foolish and the respect that drove that person to ask you the question will have been lost. However, if you are exceptionally knowledgeable about your craft and are able to speak on the topic well, the person will respect you more. On another note, it is not professional to seem to have no knowledge on what is supposed to be your job. The Culinary Institute of America prides itself on professionalism. The last think I want to do is to give the CIA a bad name because I was unprepared. This principle is evident when Mrs. Vincent is judging a competition. Kerry Vincent is known for giving harsh criticisms, but no one has ever corrected her because she is never wrong. Also, no one ever has to ask her to repeat herself because she says exactly what she means very clearly and
