For this analysis assignment, I used the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) website to find technical documents from the microbiology field. I chose two whitepapers written by the same author but the papers themselves have vastly different purposes. The first white paper informs the reader of multi-resistant strains and the need for new solutions to this problem. The second document discuss a new approach to treating multidrug-resistant infections. This memo will explain the purpose of each document by comparing the intended audience, genre, conventions and the appeals used. AUDIENCEAs stated above, both documents discuss multidrug-resistant organisms. Despite their similar topic, each has a different primary audience. The first …show more content…
The second document presents new and relevant findings. Their competitors will look at thus documents to judge what products they should advertise and where they should be applying their research. Lastly, both documents must pass the judge, ATCC. In order to be published on the website, these documents had to be accurate, thorough and relevant. GENREThe documents I chose were both white papers. A whitepaper purposes a solution or sells information of products as solutions. Whitepapers typically contain background information, a solution, conclusion, works cited, visuals and examples. The first document and the second document had each of these qualities. Both documents had a header containing the title and the logo of the company. The first document contained an image of Klebsiella pneumoniae and cultures. The second image contained a single photo if one lone microorganism. Each document follow the conventions of a white paper. Since the first document is slightly like an advertisement, their produce is mentioned towards the end of the document as a way to keep the interests of readers. Neither paper violated the conventions of a white paper document and as a result, both documents are easy to understand. They are also very visually appealing and eye catching. These appealing documents are published online and are easily accessed. Since, these documents are new they are still able

There are many reasons for knowing the identity of microorganisms. The reasons range from knowing the causative agent of a disease in a patient, so as to know how it can be treated, to knowing the correct microorganism to be used for making certain foods or antibiotics. This study was done by applying all of the methods that I have been learned so far in the microbiology laboratory class for the identification of an unknown bacterium.

Microorganisms are both beneficial and harmful. These microorganisms are important to humans because they play a role in the ecology of life, by decomposing wastes, both natural and man-made, such as creating nitrogen fertilizer at the root zones of certain crops. Other several pathogens that can cause serious harm, even immediate death due to the diseases or disease causing products they produce. Overall, microorganisms play an important role in life.
The purpose of the “chi-square test” was to see if our data was in an acceptable range of a specific ratio listed above. The chi-square test took into account the expected deviations in the F2 offspring’s alleles.
When reflecting back to experiment 3, Aseptic Technique and Culturing Microbes, I realized the large amount of microorganisms that can be found in everyday life. Many different types are found with in the human body. Theses experiments focused on two types of bacteria. First was Staphylococcus epidermidis, found on the skin, and second was Lactobacillus acidophilus, found in the gastrointestinal tract. Both have similar needs for growth when it comes to temperature, however, different growth environments are used.
Hospital acquired infections are one of the most common complications of care in the hospital setting. Hospital acquired infections are infections that patients acquired during the stay in the hospital. These infections can cause an increase number of days the patients stay in the hospital. Hospital acquired infections makes the patients worse or even causes death. “In the USA alone, hospital acquired infections cause about 1.7 million infections and 99,000 deaths per year”(secondary).
Hands were wet by a running tap and antiseptic detergents or liquid soap (5ml was poured onto the hands, the technique consisted of five backwards and forwards strokes in the motion of; palm to palm, each palm over the other hand’s back, interlocking palm to palm, each palm over the other hand’s back interlocked and then the rotational scrubbing of the fingers into each palm finalised by the rubbing of the wrists during a 30-second time span. Then the hands were rinsed with water for 15-seconds and dried with two paper towels for 15-seconds. (Ayliffe et all, 1978) Whilst this technique has strict timescales the WHO elects the timescale of roughly the time taken to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. This raises concerns over the approximates as this will differ from person to person. The procedure itself remains nearly exact except from the addition of turning the tap off with a towel to avoid recontamination and the exact timings are lost. This technique only stated to use running water, however no temperature was specified. Hand Washing for Life (200-) advises that water should not be above 110F as this temperature would cause hands become damaged by loosing delicate tissues on the skin. This can cause bacteria to become trapped and more difficult to remove, as well as cause pain to the worker. It is a legal requirement for health professions to take the necessary measures to
Staphylococcus aureus- Is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-positive, salt positive, cocci shaped bacterium. Staphylococcus aureus is found as normal part of the skin floral in the nasal passages and on the skin. An estimated twenty percent of people naturally have harmless Staphylococcus aureus on their skin and are long-term carries for Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common strand of Staphylococcus in humans to date, spread through skin to skin contact or even skin to object contact that an a person infected with Staphylococcus aureus has touched. Staphylococcus aureus is coagulase positive, which induces clumping of the cells and of the blood. Staphylococcus
For my hot topic paper I chose to research multiple drug-resistant infections, better known as MDRs. I chose to research MDRs because I felt that it was a concerning topic. This topic concerned me because I think too often we forget that the medical field is still a very much developing field and there is a lot we do not know. I think MDRs are one of the most concerning things we do not know about because they are reactions to the medicines we expect to cure us and they are often a physical reminder that the very antibiotics we trust to cure our infections are not always the end-all of illnesses.
If you use probiotics on a daily basis you'll benefit greatly; probiotics are used both to prevent health problems and to treat disease. The most common probiotic bacteria strains seem to work well with most people, no matter if you enjoy normal health or if you suffer from poor health. But one thing is clear:
Macrobiotics is one of the many alternative diets that has gained popularity in the United States over the last couple decades. Michio Kushi introduced macrobiotics to New York City in the 1970's. Proponents of macrobiotics contend that it is not merely a diet, but a philosophy that, if properly observed, will ensure emotional, physical, spiritual and mental well-being. Good physical health is necessary before emotional, physical and spiritual wellness can be cultivated. See Foundation for the Macrobiotic Way
