The Philosophy of Leadership Do you have what it takes to become a great leader? There are many leadership qualities a person can possess, but it is another thing if people exercise those qualities. People who develop their leadership qualities prior to becoming a leader are better able to lead their team. As Jack Welch said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” ( ) In order to become a leader that people want to follow, a person must be honest and trustworthy, an active listener, give encouragement and motivation, and be an effective communicator.

Communication is absolutely one of the most important qualities a leader can possess, if not the number one quality. Both verbal and nonverbal communication is important as a leader. Being able to communicate with your employees is an essential skill to carry. When there is no communication employees do not know what to expect. A good company will have open communication throughout their organization.
According to The Leadership Experience, open communication is “leaders sharing all types of information throughout the company and across all levels” (2015, pg. 265). Leaders in an organization with open communication break down the typical departmental boundaries that create barriers to communication. The definition of leadership comes from within each person. Every person has his or her own interpretation of how a leadership should be defined. As a whole, leadership theories should be implemented to contribute to the improvement of our schools.
In another course, Organization Behavior & Communication, the author of this paper was asked to identify his leadership theory, one leadership theory the author identified with was the visionary leadership style. According to the article Leadership Styles, published in the Wall Street Journal, visionary leadership requires the leader to start the employee off. Leaders that fall under the visionary leadership styles, tend to give little direction and let the individual that is completing the task put a creative flair on the project (Wall Street Journal). Calia Robins, author of Characteristic of Visionay Leadership, states that all visionary leader have goals that they share, the goals are as follows: vision, organized learning, innovation, building relationships, and pioneering (Robins).

In its perfect structure, it creates positive and valuable change in the people they are leading with the end objective of expanding followers into leaders. Performed in its genuine form, transformational leadership intensify the performance, motivation and morale of followers through a diversity of techniques (Levy, 2006).
