College athletes have traditionally never been paid in the modern era. The amateur tradition that we know actually began in Victorian times during the 19th century. Over the past century college athletics have grown more popular than most professional sports. Most of its popularity is due to a large student body in addition to its Alumni, but nonetheless it has surpassed professional sports from its monetary success to its fan support. College athletics are also a very important commodity to Universities around the nation. Next to student's tuition, that's where the majority of the money comes from. No one is more responsible for bringing in that money more than the coach and his/her players. In this notion, one would think that such important people should be paid for a job well done. First, many college athletes risk getting terribly hurt every game. Also, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, also known as NCAA, is bringing in extra money from sports tournaments because of them, and finally, because if they were to get paid they could be able to support their families. Studies have shown that if these athletes got paid, they would do better in many of their classes. College sports have been popular since the 1850’s but since then the athletes have not been getting paid. College athletes should be paid to play the game that they have devoted lots of time into.

When we think of college athletes, we always think of how great these athletes are in their sports and how hard they are striving to be better in their sports. But what we do not see is when these athletes aren’t scoring touchdowns or making the buzzer beater 3 pointers is how their regular day to day life is, and how it could be difficult financially. This brings up the question of why are college athletes not currently being compensated for their participation in their sports? Why do they have to rely on a faulty scholarship that isn’t even guaranteed to the athlete to play sports for their college? If they are even lucky enough to receive one. When they aren’t even able to even receive a scholarship they have to pay for everything out of pocket. Which makes it difficult to do so since they mostly just practice and go to school everyday.

The first thing to address when discussing college athletes and compensation is the steadfast argument held on to by the NCAA’s supporters that college athletes receive a free education, and therefore do not deserve to be compensated beyond that. This argument does two things: it distracts from the primary issue, that college athletes are prevented from profiting off of their name and likeness, and serves as a flat-out lie. In fact, according to the NCAA’s own website, only 56% of Division I athletes receive “some” form of athletics aid, meaning that even less than that receive a full free education to go with the 44% who receive no compensation at all (NCAA Recruiting). Add in the fact that athletes are typically put into majors that will be convenient for their schedule and not majors that can offer them something later in life, and this often used argument holds no weight at all in this discussion.

Colleges do give these athletes a chance to get noticed and most of the time a free education. To most, that’s enough all in it’s own. Smaller budgeted schools can’t afford this, so they couldn’t do it. If some players get paid and others don’t, then a lot of outrage will

The only sports that actually bring in some money is the big activities, football and basketball. Most college sports seem to not bring any money in. College Athletes should be paid because billions of dollars are being made each year. Universities’ make most of their income from the Athletic Department. When the student enters college as an athlete, his or her role as a player become their job and lifestyle. The athletes receive scholarships, but that is still not normally enough base on each person personal need. College athletes are not allowed to work. Who will pay for all the necessary expenses if they come from poor families? College athletes make the school millions of dollars through merchandise and games. Most of the athletes that can leave school and turn professional do so, because most college athletes come from poverty.

Why is it that college student-athletes do not receive payment for their respective sports? Many people are unaware of the life of a college student-athlete, whether division one, two, or three, the life of a student-athlete can be quite difficult. If people were more aware of what these college student-athletes undergo every day, they may be more willing to stick up for the matter. However, the fight cannot end with other people, for these college student-athletes must defend themselves as well, if a change is going to take place anytime soon.
