Leaders are the ones we turn to when life gets to be too much. Good leaders set examples and provide guidance through education (Huber, 2014). As a new nurse I can understand how important it is to have a leader you turn to when you are unsure. Furthermore, in the business of health care we are managing people 's lives and one wrong move can be deadly. Therefore, it is important to collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure a safe competent method of delivery. Ideally, the role of a leader in health care is one that is knowledgable, firm, and confident, with the ability to deviate from the plan to assist with an emergency. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to reveal three key behaviors successful leaders exhibit, assess my personal leadership style, referencing theories, while determining an optimal work environment based upon the aforementioned.

In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. What is a leader? A leader is a person who commands a group, organization, or country. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. I have experience democratic leaderships through playing on a high school football team, being apart of groups in college for class presentations, being a youth leader in my church, and also being apart of a family. I have gain important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. In the world today, there are leaders everywhere such as Parents, Pastors, The President, CEO of Companies, Supervisors and World leaders just to name a few, these individuals can be good or bad, for you or against you. A leader is a person that sees things through in order to make change either in the mental growing aspect of one’s life, the economics of the world, or spiritual belief. The characteristics of a good leader are the leaders’ ability to inspire others willingness to leader and integrity.

As we continue to learn about leadership, we continue to see the importance of having certain qualities. There are differing opinions on what traits hold more importance than others, but in the end, each quality plays a specific role in forming an excellent leader. Three qualities that preform a role in the equation, and that needs strengthened in my own leadership skills, are enthusiasm, persistence and charisma.

Having the ability to leader determines a person’s level of effectiveness of leadership. In order to be an efficient and effective nurse, they need to be an effective leader as the patients; organization and their peers are depending on them to influence others. A true leader never stops from learning and growing as leadership develops daily. There is an old saying, ‘who we are is who we attract’, and the writer does believe in this statement, it can be old however; it is still relevant and applicable for today’s leaders. To be a leader is not an easy task and to be a good leader, nurses need to start to lead and should never stop learning how to lead others (Dwyer, 2011).

Catalano implies that leadership is the capability of a person to persuade the actions of peers and other members of an organization, motivate others within the circle to work towards a common shared goal that may include providing high-quality client care, maintaining a safe working environment, developing new policies and procedures, and increasing the power of the profession. (Catalano, 2015). Leaders generally emerge formally or informally and may consist of new nurses or seasoned well experienced nurses. It is so important for every individual to know the great characteristics of being a leader. Leadership today is such a dominant characteristic to have because it shows the capability of being able to lead others with an purpose. This role is used everywhere within a job field, sports, churches, homes, and pretty much anything you can name when you are taking authority from someone or something. Five characteristics of leadership that I will be discussing in this paper on how leadership enhances yourself as a person from culture to culture, how leadership enhances the qualifications of your progress in the workplace, and also how leadership helps you in college as well are: Visionary, Open-minded, Inspirational, Humbleness and Trustworthiness.

An effective leader can create a working environment that satisfactorily supports the staff members so he or she can productively perform in his or hers’ assignments. The top three characteristics of an effective leader are the ability to communicate well, fairness to everyone on the team and are knowledgeable in his or hers’ field of practice. An effective leader must be able to communicate well with others to maintain and promote open communication among the team. When leaders deal with employee conflict, an effective leader is fair. These leaders motivate their nursing staff to work toward a greater good in creating a positive change (Dunham & Klafehn, 1990). An effective leader should be knowledgeable about his or her leadership role as well as those he or she is supervising.

Someday, I have no idea when I will go into a position of leadership. Thinking about this I will have to decide what key characteristics I should imply to help my group, but another thing I would have to think about is how I would be perceived by my fellow people whom I shall be leading.

Caring, empathy, communication, and intelligence are positive key leadership traits that are identified by B.M. Bass and R. Bass (2008), authors of The Bass Handbook of Leadership. Caring, empathy, and communication are part of B.M. Bass and R. Bass interpersonal competence, and intelligence is a task competence. Even though, these are a few of the 6 key positive leadership traits identified by B.M. Bass and R. Bass: task competence, interpersonal competence, traits of character biophysical traits, personal traits. Caring, empathy, communication, intelligence are enough to show the effect of positive behavior in the workplace.

Many people believe that vision is an essential quality in leadership. For example, if you were an architect leader then you would have to plan out on blueprints what your vision of the building of how would it look like. As a leader, you have to create a clear vision or the objective of your plan could be ruined. Vision has various meanings, which all include the definition of a mental image in their head. Vision is a component for opening a door of success for an organization. Often, the phrase mission is used to replace vision, but there is a big difference between the two.

Leadership arises in different situations with all being a variety of characteristics and traits. While there are a variety of connotations and denotations of the word leadership, one can say that an effective leader doesn’t necessarily need to have all the traits that a great leader needs to have, but only possessing the traits of being able to direct individuals into the correct path, being ethical and having high moral values, and being loyal.

What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
