Consumers today want to do business with reputable companies that are led and managed by ethical decision makers. Ethical decision makers look to partner with other companies that share similar morals and values. In other words, the public and other companies want to associate with an organization that will make ethical judgements. Ethical decisions are not always obvious nor are they based on what is right or wrong or what is good or bad (Gonzalez-Padron, 2015). They are choices made by managers at all levels and stakeholders who follow the company’s core values, ethics policies and moral compass. One leader who is an example of integrity and ethics is Bill Daniels, who opened and operated a small insurance agency in Wyoming. Analyzing Bill Daniel’s ethical tradition, decision approach, and moral development will provide a foundation to Bill’s business methodology.
Ethical Traditions
Ethical traditions or theories connect with three behavioral dimensions. The three dimensions are actions, agent and outcome (Gonzalez-Padron, 2015). In Bill Daniels story, he clearly subscribed to the character of the agent approach. According to Gonzalez-Padron (2015), “The premise of the ethical tradition is two-fold: 1) a belief that people of good character act rightly and ethically, and 2) following rules is secondary to preserving relationships” (p.155). In Normative Ethics there are three distinct schools of thought, and each differentiate through moral intentions. Consequentialism relies on the consequences of an action in order to distinguish whether or not something is morally acceptable. Deontology considers the morality of an action by one’s reason for doing a certain deed. Lastly, virtue ethics bases morality off of virtuous character, and how a virtuous person would act given a certain predicament. Ultimately, consequentialism provides the most practical explanation for morality due to the notion of providing the best possible result. What exactly does the term “ethics” mean? When asking this question among several different groups of people, I’m sure all of their answers would be different in many ways, but would all draw the general theme that ethics is somewhat of a study of what is right and what is wrong. This is a mostly correct conclusion, except for the fact that it encompasses not only determining what is right and wrong, but attempting to systemize and defend those ethical positions which one holds. Every business develops a set of ethical principles that they abide by. The business ethical principles intentions: it construct the business certainty in the community , maintain the employees liveried in what the business attempt to have as structural conducts and aid the employees consume principles to make ethical choices that guards the business. In a culture with a diverse assessment structure and augmented judgment visibly by companies with changeable ethics and interests, there appears to be further difficulties on business individuals to make tougher ethical assessments. In our day-to-day performances, we depend on on our ethical principles to monitor us in the correct path and do the correct things. The substance of any efficacious and perpetual business is they segment a mutual ethical matter concentrating on presenting and generating value along with allocating their business values with the citizens they network with on a day-to-day basis.
Since my journey here at Bryant began in September, I have changed so much. Coming here, I expected certain things such as my study habits, daily routine and friend group to be altered. One change I was not anticipating making was my approach to ethics. Over the course of the past fifteen weeks, my knowledge of ethics as well as my approach to ethics has changed. I have become more knowledgeable about the different approaches to ethics and have gained insight as to where I stand in my approach to ethics.
Ethical behavior is virtuous and beneficial for business in any type of organization. In healthcare, the outcomes are improved patient care, dedicated staff and healthcare providers, and amplified market share. It obliges leaders, managers, directors, and supervisors to have a comprehensive interpretation of the role of ethical decision making (Winkler, 2005). Ethical health care organizations have incorporated and combined ethical practices and values, continuing education on ethics for everyone involved, successful ethics substructure, and morally spirited and dauntless leaders (Winkler, 2005). These organizations have a vision and statements that directs behavior and decision making.
In the world today, when there is an unanswered question, I go to the internet and ask Google for the answer. Sometimes, the answer is sufficiently placed atop the resulting query and, sometimes I need to rephrase my question but, sometimes, I find search engines feeding me information filled with deceit and buffoonery. “Great individuals have great ethics and great values.” Ethics and morality can be used interchangeably as they sound as if they mean the same although there is a wide distinction between them. “Strictly speaking, morality is used to refer to what we would call moral standards and moral conduct while ethics is used to refer to the formal study of those standards and conduct. Ethics is one of the most important considerations when making a decision about end of life. It is also where the most controversy lies as arguments, using ethical theories, can be made for and against laws on end of life. “Ethics has at least two primary functions: to guide our actions, and to provide justification for the guidance given” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p. 42). A duty-oriented ethicist would be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. They believe “we can’t stop all pain; what is crucial is that we act with dignity and respect in the face of suffering” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.40). “Kant’s view is a person committing suicide takes the easy way out, where reason would dictate he or she face their problems” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.38). Virtue ethicists would also be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. Virtue ethicists hold “it is not only important to do the right thing but equally to have the right disposition, motivation, and traits for being good and doing right” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.43). As a believer in God, a virtue ethicist would hold suicide as an unreasonable option. They would believe God to be the “sole arbiter of life and death” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.42) and therefore, the right thing to do would be for God to end their life as he sees fit.
“Brad is a production engineer at a bicycle company and part of his job includes inspecting broken bikes and drafting the design repairs for their repair” (Bartlett). You briefly mention higher power or inner conscience, but not specifically the ethical theories related to them. For instance, the theological argument believes in an intelligent designer. If that’s the case, how does that play into how people act? Or if we need to follow duty to be moral without the need of a higher power, how does that effect a person’s behavior?
Everyone’s views of ethics and morals are different because we all have experience different things in life that have contributed to the way we view things ethically acceptable. Throughout my 21 years on this earth my views on ethics and morals have change. I think that ethics and morals are taught to us by the people we surround ourselves with and the environment that we are in. For example, the behaviors that I experienced in public school on the regular basis, would seem bazar to the people in the North Hills school district, where I transferred to in my junior year of high school. In public school people would roam the halls, talk over teachers, and do a whole lot of other things that aren’t normal in a high school setting.
