There are many ethical dilemmas that occur daily in our hospitals across the world. Not everyone agrees with standards and policies that are required in hospitals or even with the law. If not everyone obeys the law, ethical cases form. In Springfield, Missouri, a holistic nurse got fired for fighting against Cox South hospital policies. Carla Brock has been a nurse at Cox South hospital and not only refused the flu shot, but also refused to wear a mask. She refused due to religious beliefs, she gets short of breath while wearing the mask, and she feels the mask is meant to intimidate and humiliate those who refuse the shot. The ethical question in this case study is to decide if Carla should have been fired for not wearing a mask after refusing the flu shot and what are other potential proposals. The four-way method will separate out what are the truths, consequences, fairness, and character, of this ethical case study.

The Mythical Norm is a set of attributes that are advantageous in what one seeks to have. These advantages vary in race, class, physical features, sex, sexual orientation, gender, age, and religion. Lorde (2001) describes these norms in America being “defined as white, thin, male, young, heterosexual, Christian, and finally secure” (p. 178). People who seek the Mythical Norm fail to recognize their privilege from those who lack them.

Risk; something we do everyday turning onto a street from a blind corner, jaywalking to get somewhere faster, peeking at our phones while driving and signing up for something new. The everyday risks we take can seem meaningless and uneventful, but for others it can mean their lives; for them everything must be in check otherwise it could result in death. Astronauts are trained for months about how to deal with the risks they will be faced with during their missions, along with proper solutions. These solutions are taught to them by the great minds of scientists; whose duty is to also make sure there is the least amount of risk possible for the mission. By that time consuming milk was not as common as it is today. It was only farmers in some specific regions that were using cow’s milk. Milk’s market grew the mass production of meat in the 15th century. Afterwards in the 17th century, the idea of eating out and going to restaurants was born and fast food industries, started using animal’s meat for producing their meals. This delightful, candy-like, thirst quencher that’s adored by tons of children in our school, is now a dangerous drink. I’ve been researching about the popular chocolate milk, and found some alarming facts. Chocolate milk actually attracts kids due to its sweetness, but it may turn away kids from drinking regular milk. “I don’t recommend that kids drink chocolate milk in schools, because the added sugar provides unnecessary extra calories when so many kids are already struggling with their weight and unhealthy eating,” states RD and nutrition/health expert Joy Bauer. Besides, there’s so much cholesterol and saturated fat, it can lead to tons of health problems. Although it may have some benefits, there’s really not much calcium in milk itself, but it may have many harmful additives. This is a major problem and I think we need to ban chocolate milk in our school.

The Alaska Code of Ethics for teachers contain many points that deal with normative and applied ethics. I drew this conclusion because many of the topics within the code lead to things that explain how things should be done or if situations arise, it explains how they should be handled. These more general ideas provide a framework, which grounds these ethics (Moral Philosophy, 2009). From there the Alaska Code of Ethics spirals down to more specific terms and situations. This is when the code gets into more applied ethics (Moral Philosophy, 2009). The Alaska Code of Ethics seems to speak to the personal values and morals of those for whom they are intended. This can be seen in many of the codes such as, ?The educator may not engage in physical abuse of a student or sexual conduct with a student and shall report to the commission knowledge of such an act by an educator? (Alaska Department of Education & Early Learning, 2000). This is just one example of how Alaska?s code asks educators to abide not only by the professional code of ethics, but to also base their actions and judgments on their personal values and ethics. Teachers, in their responsibility to society, must work in order to not betray that trust (Nelson, Palonsky, & McCarthy, 2010). The knowledge of this responsibility is obvious throughout the Alaska Code of Ethics.

Less than one year ago (November 1999) Taco Bell Corporation lost some public confidence due to the E-coli outbreak from tainted ground meat. Our response during the November 1999 outbreak should be duplicated to assist with the public perception related to tainted products. While the restaurant products are separate from the home products, they will be linked by our Taco Bell branding. Our use of media outlets, phone banks, and websites should be used.
