Throughout my life growing up in Polk County whenever police departments became a topic of conversation, the best department in the area would always be Lakeland Police department. Now that it is my turn to start looking for jobs in law enforcement, the Lakeland Police department was top priority for me. There are many different qualities that this department holds that make it an extremely substantial department to work for. Some of these qualities are stability and high standards set for officers. Some qualities that I could bring to the department are determination and Integrity. The meshing between these qualities is what would make me a great police officer at the Lakeland Police Department.
Officers working for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have the responsibility of serving the public and for this reason they are given substantial authority to enable them to carry out their duties. The citizens have expectations that such authority is given to individuals who have demonstrated the through their conduct to have the intention of using the authority for the sake of the public’s interest. Therefore, the recruitment process of these two agencies involves scrutinizing the candidates’ background to select the ones with the highest probability of success.

To be selected for a police officer position, and applicant will have to overcome many obstacles (Doerner, 2012). A sworn police officer position can be very competitive with many agencies attracting 50-60 applicants for each available job (Doerner, 2012). Knowing this, I believe makes an argument against the critics that argue a rigorous selection process needlessly produces a smaller eligibility pool. The rigorous selection process has stood the test of time with the Denver Police Department’s hiring guidelines used almost 70 years ago is very much the same for many agencies today (Doerner, 2012).
The focus of this paper will be based upon different crime prevention strategies implemented by members of the communities, local and government authorities.
