والاتصال بين الثقافات الكثير من المشاكل. According to some “experts” around the world everyone can understand this. Actually, not everyone can communicate using Arabic and I’m going to restate my point in a way that English speakers can all understand:there are lots of problems in intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is the form of communication that aims to share information across different cultures and social groups. There are lots of dilemmas in intercultural communications and there are researches about them. One of the researches are Laray M.Barna’s article, “Stumbling blocks in Intercultural communication”. Using this article I want to explain the dilemmas in three different situations.

A baseball player coming to a Japanese team from America called Jack Elliot , a Japanese coach of the team Uchiyama, the coach's parents and the coaches daughter Hiroko. In this scene the five are eating Japanese food at Uchiyama’s house and Elliot gets into trouble by not knowing the table manners of Japan. Firstly Elliot is trying to eat soba but does not understand the right manners. The dilemma in this part is assumption of similarities as in a Japanese perspective you are supposed to raise your bowl with one hand and hold your chopsticks with the other and also, supposed to have the attributes to use chopsticks. On the other hand, in an American perspective you can eat without raising your bowl and furthermore, attributes of chopsticks would not be needed. Both sides assumed the other would know the factors of the of each others cultures as the Japanese people assumed that Elliot would know how to eat soba properly and Elliot assumed that the table manners were the same in Japan. Secondly, Elliot wants a drink and sees Uchiyama raise his ochoko (a Japanese cup of beer) to Hiroko. So, …show more content…
The English man visiting Italy and as he goes into a store he bumps into an Italian woman and falls in love with her andafterwards, he meets the women by coincidence and tries to get fond with her by carrying her bags. After this the English man tries to send her a letter and a bundle of chrysanthemums and places it on her bike located in front of her house. A truck accidentally knocks her bike down and Italians start to put chrysanthemums in front of her door. The modifiable things here are assumption of similarities and language difference. Chrysanthemums have a positive meaning in most countries such as the USA and is used in ways such as congratulating others. But, in Italy uniquely it is equivalent to sadness and is used in negative events as they connect to the All Souls' Day (November 2nd). So, in this situation the English men assumed that chrysanthemums where categorized as positive flowers in Italy as well and chose the wrong kind of flower for a present. Also, the man could not speak Italian and the Italian women did not understand English, so the two using different languages could also be said as a problem in this issue. If the man could speak French, he could of asked if chrysanthemums where appropriate for this situation finding the problem. Also, if the person who sold the flower was able to speak English he could of told the man what kind of flower he
In our world of expanding technology and shrinking geography, people of different cultures have increasing frequency of contact and need for effective communication on a daily basis. Whether through travel, immigration, or international business, having the ability to communicate across many different cultures is an advantage in and of itself. Speaking a different language is an obvious obstacle to intercultural communication, but a greater and more difficult hurdle is to “speak” a different culture. To understand and comprehend and even apply these tiniest
Barriers to effective intercultural communication can be defined as the aspects or conditions that interfere with effective exchange of ideas or thoughts (Antos, 2011). There are many barriers to effective intercultural communication and these may occur at any stage in the communication process.
Intercultural conflict can be defined as, “the implicit or explicit emotional struggle between persons of different cultural communicates over perceived or actual incompatibility of cultural ideologies and values situational norms, goals, face-orientations, scarce resources, style/processes, and/or outcomes in a face-to-face context within a sociohistorical embedded system.” (Neuliep, 2018, p. 337-338). Intercultural conflict occurs when one group cultural becomes a factor on how conflict should be seen as, managed, and resolved. When the Chinese and American culture interact, intercultural conflict is bound to happen due to the cultures extreme differences. When a person gets into an intercultural conflict they should handle it with respect to the other culture so that the relationship between the two will remain the same (Neuliep, 2018).
According to my experiences and different sources of theories, the challenges aside from languages which we have faced in communicating with people from a different country are dialects and complicated term, nonverbal languages, and languages disabilities. The first challenge we have confronted in communication with people from a different country is dialects. Each country consists of several regions which might have diverse dialects and complex terms, consequently it is difficult for non-native person, who don’t completely understand that languages to interpret the real meaning. Therefore, dialectical diversity can be a cause of misunderstanding and gaps between communication. Another barrier aside from different languages communication is
Intercultural communication is defined as when people communicate with one another who have different cultures. They may differ because of their languages, beliefs, values, and behavioral characteristics (Bennett, 1998). The intercultural communication plays a key role in globalization. It will help organizations to have a long-term success if they can manage the cultural differences and intercultural cooperation effectively to conflicts. Increasing shared knowledge and dealing with miscommunication are the two main factors for having a successful intercultural communication. However, the difference in discourse systems is the most miscommunication issue that leads individuals to misunderstand and misinterpret to the contents or messages
Intercultural communication normally frames our cultural understanding in a way that will not undermine hope and the new ways of understanding each other. If we don’t solve this on time, our future generations will also condemn the societies for prolonged war and suffering with regard to effects of intercultural communication.

The organization I have chosen is NEA (National Education Association) that deals with communicating cross-cultural and what teachers should know about diversity. The Website address is http://iteslj.org/Articles/Pratt-Johnson-CrossCultural.html which is found in the NEA link. The article explains the need for educators in terms of culturally responsive and competent as schools and classrooms become increasingly linguistically and culturally diverse. The article highlights five important points of cultural difference with which all teachers should be aware when teaching students of diverse backgrounds. These five points are ways of knowing, ways of solving problems, ways of communicating nonverbally, ways of learning, and ways of dealing
The ability to grow and be successful in any society depends on its ability to transcend limitations of intercultural communication. The chief aim of social groupings is to harness the capacity of the human mind. The ability to channel this process information during communication impacts our social connections to one another, especially in intercultural communication.
Previous researchers have found that for a person to achieve better and more effective communication competence, it is necessary to develop skills that allow an appropriate participation in specific situations. The ability to listen, ask questions, and express concepts or ideas effectively is an important part of communication competence. Intercultural communication presents an unexplored and challenging field that needs to be understood for a better development in communication. (Dillon and McKenzie, 1998). The variables of listening depend on the different perceptions that a person obtains through their cultural background. Furthermore, culture often affects the structure of consciousness in the act of listening. When a person seeks to
Intercultural communication: A discourse approach attempts to explain the discourse approach and points to the authors ' distinction between cross-cultural communication and intercultural communication. The chapter underlines the authors ' approach and theory to intercultural communication. It covers several explanations and the distinction between cross-cultural communication and intercultural communication. The chapter discusses the many varieties of culture that exist. It also clarifies that intercultural communication can occur in conversations not necessarily when two people are from different countries.
My site of investigation is a dance studio, namely Fit Dance Studio, in Kowloon Bay. It has been, without a second thought, chosen for my ethnographic research because I have been an active participant over there recurrently for five years on a regular basis. I have been going to the dance classes and joining regular parties with other participants, including dance tutors and students of different ages and backgrounds from time to time. In this regard, my ethnographic data may sound and accurate with my understanding about the community. I acquire the data through observational techniques and participation in the practice. Since my participation is a long process of approximately five years, I believe I am a competent member and
Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze
When dealing with an intercultural conflict, it is important to keep in mind the cultural differences that keep either side from approaching the situation in the same manner. This paper will illustrate a conflict between a Vietnamese teacher and an American teacher. It will then explain the way that the Vietnamese culture views conflict. Followed by the way an American would view conflict. Finally, it will explain how both sides could proceed when dealing with another intercultural conflict. This example of conflict appears to be very simple but given that the Vietnamese culture is a collectivist culture; it can be very complicated.
Intercultural communication competence refers to the ability of an individual to adapt and communicate appropriately and effectively across a wide array of cultural contexts. That is to say, for an individual to be considered an intercultural communicator they must understand other’s cultures as well as they understand their own, and apply this understanding to communication (Chen 1-2). With the increasing diversity at the workplace, school and other social settings, it has become increasingly important to learn how to communicate with people from a diverse array of cultures. More importantly, adapting to a more effective intercultural communication competence model provides us with learning opportunities occasioned by the interaction with people from other backgrounds. The intercultural communication competence model comes with some key components including tolerance for uncertainty, self-knowledge, and motivation. The greatest and most important of these aspects is motivation. An individual must be willing to foster relationships with people from a different cultural background. If an individual lacks the willingness to promote intercultural relationships, then other aspects of the intercultural communication model become moot.
