There are many stereotypes associated with people who live in the city and people who live in a small town. A lot of stereotypes lean towards people who grow up in a small town do not have the chance to receive a finer education, or everyone who lives in the city are rude and arrogant. Growing up in a small town can lead to one having a very narrow-minded attitude. In a place where almost everyone is the same skin-color, has the same socioeconomic status, and follows the same way of thinking, anyone who fails to conform to the standard can be viewed as an outcast, subject to judgment from those who are looking in. I was someone who fell into this trap. I looked down upon people who were different from me, people who had vastly different ideas, dressed differently, or never tried to perform well in school. I failed to understand or welcome the distinctions between people, and never tried to get to know those who were so different from me.

Growing up in a small community exposes a person to unfortunate situations, such as crime, death, and poverty, that directly impact the quality of life. Experiencing different situations can physically, mentally, and emotionally break a person. It's even more challenging to remove yourself off the dark path that you have seen so many people go down. When you do break yourself out of the inevitable cycle of negativity, it builds your self-confidence and pushes you to strive for better. I feel that certain circumstances I have been forced to accept and experience have morphed me into the person I am today. I am person that works hard for everything I want to achieve. I am dedicated, and I will always remember the ones who have helped me in my success. This career plan is influenced by my community, much like my drive to attend college. My community has a lot of stray animals and only one veterinary clinic. Each time I see a pack of dogs eating out of a trash can or playing in an overgrown, empty lot, I am reminded of what I am working toward.

Growing up in a small town, with the knowledge of a small town community can have an effect on you. Having the respect and dignity to know between right and wrong adds and interesting aspects into a life style. Growing up in a small community makes you realize what it is like to have small class rooms and having your teachers know you by a first name basis.Knowing everyone on each sport team because “everyone knows everyone in a small town”. Some civilians from a rural area does not know what it is like to be in a crowded town. There are a lot of reasons why some people in society are in favor of the less crowded spots. In my experience, there are disadvantages and advantages anywhere you live. When you ask random people why they live in dense populate place, they may say because I don’t like being in a traffic jam. The main reasons why they dislike the crowded places are because they are afraid to get out of their comfort zone, dislike the crowds, it costs too much money like food and gas prices, and there is not enough outdoor activities to do in cold or hot weather.

Growing up in a very little town in Illinois was a lot different than growing up in Houston, Texas. When I was in the fourth grade I found many things to have changed about my surroundings, I currently lived in a place where, the people thought and acted differently. I know now reading about it and understanding more that some of those changes were for the good and some were not. Small town living has its advantages such as, very close friendships, close approximately to may things, and friendly people. Looking back, I also realized that there were a lot of disadvantages such as lack of transportation, affects of a poor education, no opportunities for growth, crime, no diversity, and low paying jobs and housing. Now that I am older, and aware of the affects of living in a small town, I can see how these many things affected my life and will continue affect it in the future.

Living and growing up in a small town is better than doing so in a big city.

There are definitely more conveniences living in the city. Grocery stores are within blocks from your home, a gas station is to be found on every corner, and banks and hospitals are within walking distance. Living in the country means commuting to get to these places. It also means having to be prepared and making several stops to get all things accomplished in one day to avoid traveling back and forth several times in one week.

City people tend to themselves, while country folks are more likely to care for their spouses, offspring, and pets. Country people tend to put others before themselves because that is how they have been taught. While city people are self-centered and care for themselves before thinking of anyone else.

Another key point is commuting. People who live in the urban community have better access to public transportation. Citizens can easily get around by walking, taking a bus, and riding the train at a lower cost. In contrast, owning a home in suburb can be costly for many people. Not only do people have to keep up with their mortgages, but they sometimes have to pay a yard maintenance fee and their Home Owners Association (HOA) dues for the up-keeping of the neighborhood which can be very costly. Besides the home cost, people who live in suburban neighborhoods do have the convenience of traveling in the comfort of their own vehicle, and they do not deal with the concerns of public transportation. However, they still have to deal with the cost for long commuting and the wear and tear of the vehicle.

Many families and individuals find themselves at some point questioning the advantages of city living versus country living. It is nearly impossible to find a good answer to this question. What is good for one person might not be good for another. Some people enjoy the busy, hyper active metropolitan city where they can use all amenities and have unlimited opportunities for work and leisure. At the same time, other people feel the urge to be closer to Mother Nature, relaxation, beauty, and peace. They take pleasure in living in the calm and peaceful environment of the countryside and spending their free time fishing, hiking, picking berries in the woods, or playing in the creek.
