Corruption is something we never really want to hear about, but is a very serious matter to contend. The idea that one person would extort or hold power over another human being isn’t a highly talked about subject. However, in India there is a problem with corruption, which has run out of control. People subject to poverty in India and considered poor by other nations’ standards are taken for what little cash they have or property they own by someone of a higher authority. What’s worse is those very people also begin doing the same. Corruption is an opportunity to many, and to some their only way to get ahead. This problem is so far reaching in India that one has to question how things will possibly get better. The effects of …show more content…
India, having been a closed market to the world until changes started being made in the 1990s, has a need to become less regulated with an expected effect of lower corruption rates taking place. It can be seen that there is indeed an economic impact where corruption is concerned. For a country that shelters one third of the world’s poor, an economic breakthrough could be just what India needs to help improve the lives of each of its citizens. To do that, the government needs to take a more rigorous stance against corruption and do all that it can to cleanse it from the system. Perhaps India will then be in more prosperous times and achieve higher economic growth rates as suggested by Oberoi and Aggarwal, thereby lifting people out of poverty. The corruption doesn’t just affect the people on an economic level. It is present within the very society and works against those who may be perfectly innocent. For example, many police officers in India use their power to extort those they should be serving to protect. Dean Nelson of The Daily Telegraph in London, reports on “a series of attacks by corrupt police officers that has provoked a new campaign by India Against Corruption…” (A Killing Too Far). The first incident reported involved theft from a stopped vehicle and killing the driver. Yet another incident was reported where a truck driver, pulled over by the police, refused to pay money being extorted from him by the
India has a major problem with corruption. In the book The White Tiger, we see this problem throughout Balram’s life. The first time we are exposed to corruption is when Balram is just a young boy living in his village that is in the “darkness” of India. His village of Laxmangarh is in the darkness of India and is run by four landlords that use intimidation and scare tactics to collect an unfair amount of money from their tenants.(pg. 21-22) Another place you see corruption in The White Tiger is when Balram is working for Ashok and his family. Their family has to pay the government bribes to keep from being prosecuted for illegally stealing coal, and evading taxes.(pg.233) Imagine if we lived in a country where if you paid the national government
Throughout history positions of power and wealth have been plagued by corruption, does this power cause people to be corrupt? Or is the power and wealth earned through immoral and corrupt practices? In order to find these answers, one must define what they feel is corrupt, for most corruption is the act of being dishonest or immoral with the motive of personal gains of money or power. There are numerous accounts of politicians, military leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, and millionaires, all earning or using their power and wealth in an immoral and corrupt manner. Whether money is used for personal gain, used to corrupt others, or the wealth was earned by corrupt ways, it seems that the accumulation of wealth is constantly accompanied by corruption.
In the book Behind the Beautiful Forevers, author Katherine Boo sheds light on the topic of corruption. Corruption is something that is seen everywhere, but varies in depth. She chooses to focus on India, because she is fascinated with how so many people are impoverished while others prosper. Boo is able to convey both the benefits and downfalls of corruption within a community by deciding to only focus on a sliver of people from a single slum. She chooses to focus on the citizens from a slum called Annawadi due to sense of possibility in the community. Boo decides to watch this community for several years to see who gets ahead, who doesn’t,
First, it is important to define what corruption is. The term, “corruption” covers a broad range of human actions,
And the damages it has done to the polity are astronomical. The menace of corruption leads to slow movement of files in offices, police extortion tollgates and slow traffics on the highways, port congestion, queues at passport offices and gas stations, ghost workers syndrome, election irregularities, among others. Corruption is one of the most common problem in everywhere in the world. Some where its acceptable and some where it crosses the boundary.
India’s domestic business has seen high levels of corruption; more commonly the fraudulent behaviours and bribery of government officials and civil servants. This creates an unlevel playing field between domestic business and foreign business. Evidently this seemingly small issue of corruption could potentially tarnish India’s position as favoured destination of foreign investment (Mendiolaza, 2012).
In China, corruption is so apparent that often people are disincentivized to owning businesses because permits and consultants cost too much and require bribes. Yet, bribes can cost the economy big money because essentially the corrupt businessmen are taking the money away from public services (111). The issues coming up in the future are that the governments that are corrupt might have negative impacts on other global economies and spread the norm of corruption. Yet, both countries do show the will to “purify the Party” which includes newly implemented rules against gluttony, adultery, and even playing golf under the leadership of Wang Qishan (113). In China a bigger issue is also the fact that the public is becoming increasingly involved in corruption scandals. Officials worry people will get carried away with excessive accusations (115). More issues stem from the type of political system that China has; they employ a nominal legal system that runs at the discretion of the Party leadership so this means that whoever is in power can change the entire political ideals. In India, they are based on a historical British political system with anticorruption laws but these laws are often not enforced. Yet, even when they are enforced, trials in case can last for up to a decade (116). In India, they are making moves to help out their corruption issues. They implemented the Aadhaar program
Ultimately corruption takes away from the total resource pie, which essentially takes away from the common populace. When a nation’s resources are fraudulently diverted, societal development and progress suffer across the board. Accordingly, nongovernmental organizations such as Transparency International concur with this assessment and also depict corruption as an anti-poor mechanism. Hence, corruption feeds into the cycle of poverty in developing nations, leaving the majority of wealth for the elite minority, while the majority of the populace lives in abject poverty. In the end, corruption and poor governance, combined with an abundance of accessible and valuable resources throughout the region provide ample motive for the generation of a power grab.
Corruption might as well be human nature, it has been portrayed throughout history. From back in the past, to now. For example, “23 Police Officers Fire 377 Bullets at Two Men With Zero Guns” “standing army” People that have power, either politically, or physically tend to
Corruption and money go hand in hand. Money is a motivating factor for corruption, and the transfer of money or other special benefits often finances corruption.
Corruption is clearly everywhere around us with many forms and is a world-wide crisis. A day doesn’t go by that there isn’t a report in the media about some form of corruption by someone famous or internationally known, a Politian or an average every day citizen just perhaps looking for attention. Like a soap opera you’ve missed keeping up on for months, you can almost always turn the TV on and pick up right where you left off. My awareness of the most common form of corruption happens between the police and
Corruption would not be an issue if it was not for personal greed and the human desire for external goods. But fuel must be added to fire in order for corruption to take place. As I mentioned before a lack of transparency can lead to a corruptive culture within the justice system, this is because the less eye watching over the easier it is to lie and deceive. Another issue in the justice system is that can allow for corruption to take place due to the absence of regulations. A lack of regulations leads to a lack of control which then allows for corruption to run wild. It is factors like these that allow for corruption to take place, unnoticed and
The unlawful use of a person’s position while in power leads to multiple problems with today’s government. The corrupt methods politicians use are ideas that are strictly in place for personal gain. Present throughout history and still prevalent within today’s world, government corruption has consisted of a number of negative issues including bribery, economic and social impacts, and the misuse of power. Government’s role within daily life has been shown to have negative effects as seen in many aspects of life as well as in literature.
Rose-Ackerman (1997) disputes the existence of a stable growth enhancing equilibrium level of corruption. She argues that corruption will always escalate to ever higher levels. Indeed, Kaufman (1998) and Kaufman and Wei (2000) find that in economies where corruption is high and more bribes have to be paid, managers end up allocating more time with public officials and less time in productive work. The pervasive and insidious nature of corruption, it is not enough to adopt pious declarations and public campaigns in the name of zero-tolerance for
Corruption is a complex political, social, and economic anomaly that negatively affects developing and developed countries. It weakens democratic institutions, holds economic development, widening the rich-poor gap and certainly leads to governmental instability. The World Bank definition of corruption states that “…the abuse of public office for private gain”.
