Throughout this paper my thoughts on Culture and Society have significantly changed. At the begging of this paper I found it complicated to understand the concept of Culture and How I can relate to it. But I was blind to the issue which can develop within societies. Now I have an understanding of my culture as my way of beliefs, my values, and my views as a member of society (Ryan, 2010). I will discuss two main themes of “Expressing Identity” and “Human rights”. I will show my understanding and essential developing in Culture and Society. For our Group presentation, we decide to explore the theme of Expressing Identity. It was really difficult for our group to come up with ideas on how to show our understanding of this theme. We came across the concept of identity throughout our photo boards in our first assessment for this paper. I found it really hard to define identity. According to Lawler (2008), there is no singular definition of identity and it can be interpreted differently varying for each individual. For example, I define myself as a Samoan, sister, daughter, aunty, cousin, niece, Methodist, a AUT student and a hard working mother who is trying to do better for the sake of my family. Coming up with a human right photo for our photo board assessment wasn’t easy at all. Looking through our community on peoples understanding on human rights really gave me some understanding of what human rights are. I believe that each and every one of us have different understanding of human rights. Beits (2003) states that, hum rights express the basic values and fundamental entitlements and needs for every human being. “Human rights include many very important cultural rights, which should be given equal attention, such as the right to participate in cultural life, enjoy one’s culture”
