Describe the factors that will influence the choice of leadership styles or behaviours in workplace situations.

After doing some research I have decided to look at Douglas McGregor’s XY theory. Looking at Theory Y manager they would tell you it is best to leave the workforce to get on with their work and they will help each other in the right direction. Theory X manager is a much more authoritarian manager. They will tell you that you would have to have a structured day in place, as they believe that employees can be work shy and will do as little as possible.

Some factors which can have an influence on these theories are, the size of the business and the type of business. A family run or small business may individuals or groups of people who are working in a job that they are very passionate about these people would probably fit into Theory Y. Large cooperation’s or businesses’ who have a much bigger turn over than small businesses are much more likely to adopt Theory X as they must get the most out of their people. The staff don’t see this as a job they would stay in for a prolonged period of time.

There are other leadership styles. These can sometimes be influenced in different ways depending on the manager. All managers have different personalities these can also have an influence. If you were a trusting manager you might be a democratic leader. Praise, reward and sometimes incentives to take ownership of their work are just some of the things a democratic leader
