A family is a group of parents and/or children living in a household together. Some people define family as those related in blood. Some consider non-relatives family. Some claim to have no family. How do you define family? When you’re in kindergarten, most of your teachers start off the year by asking you to tell them your favorite animals, your favorite color, how many people are in your family, or how many siblings you have. Being under the age of seven, most answer with “My family consists of my mom, my dad, my brother, and my sister.” When you’re asked in middle school, you might give the same answer. In high school, the answer starts to change, from “I have five in my family.”, to “I have three people in my family.”. Things happen, people change, bonds are broken, and families fall apart. Not all families fall apart in brutal ways, some people just quit talking. The bond could have been there when you were kids, but since growing into adulthood it could change. When I was seven, I would tell you my three brothers were my best-friends. I would tell you my mom was my favorite person. I’d tell you my dad was my hero. Expect, when you’re seven, you only know family, as the people you live with, and the people you share blood with. Families aren’t all connected by blood. I know there is a million people that will fight and argue that blood is thicker than water until they are blue in the face. But I am one of the people who believe that blood does not matter. I have
My family is composed of my father, mother, a younger sister, an older sister, who unfortunately passed away, and myself. I grew up being the oldest child, for my oldest sister passed away before I was born. Although, I never got to meet my older sister her absence has taught me to value the importance of family.
Family. A word that has about as many meanings as there are stars in the sky. Can family truly be defined, or is it merely interpretive? According to Seccombe, family is a relationship by blood, marriage, or affection, in which members may cooperate economically, may care for children, and may consider their identity to be intimately connected to the larger group (Seccombe 4). Although I do agree with the above explanation of family, I believe that it is inadequate in that it only supplies a framework of family rather than the duties and purpose. To me, family is a unit of individuals, related or not, that symbolize and exude comfort, solace, and support through all the trials and triumphs life throws our way.
According to the dictionary family is a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Or family is from the descendants of a common ancestor. According to society family is a group, it can be related are not. My definition of family is anyone who is there for you through good and bad, someone who always have your back no matter what. Family is not just blood. However some of the best families are the ones you are not related to.
Families are important even if they are our blood relatives or close friends “If blood and roots don’t do the job, then we must look to water and branches…” Even if families are far away, families can be made from friends and new people you meet.
One word to describe family is team. Relating to a sports team, there will be players who struggle with getting along, but it doesn’t take long to realize that the team will not work if everyone doesn’t figure out a way to compromise with all the diverse personalities they’ve got. With family comes struggle and disappointment but that will only to an increased relationship of love and loyalty. No matter what it is, when family struggles and starts to see the family bond weaken it only opens their eyes to how much they need each other. Struggle leads to sadness which leads to loneliness and from that people need someone to rely on. Whether or not their struggles be with family sometimes they are too private and too personal for friends, so they lean back on family. In the book The Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama she portrays a message similar to this throughout the entire book.
Despite the disagreements and arguments, our family had tight-knit bonds connecting us. We all love and rely upon each for support.
Families have been an important social construct since the first humans decided it was a good idea to create some sort of order in their lives. Families are still as important as in those times, as we see them as recurring symbols in all forms of media. From movies to books, we see different kinds of families, and a multitude of strains put on families, although in almost every example, family triumphs over the odds. Unless a good portion of the members of the family are dead. Due to a bomb. I digress.
The dictionary definition of family is, “a group of parents and children living together in a household.” The definition of my family, on the other hand, would be something along the lines of, “a group of crazy parents and wild children living amongst several different households.” My parents divorced when I was young, my dad got remarried, my mom got remarried, my dad got divorced again, and then my dad got married again. Throughout all of the marriages I also acquired seven younger siblings along the way. Though the environment and family in which I have been raised is far from conventional, it has made me the open-minded, well-rounded person I am today.
My family is only restricted to my mother, friends, and professors. These people have influenced my life in so many ways possible that words can never describe. For instance, I have a father, brother, and sister who are still alive and breathing. But why do I not consider them my family? Although we share similar physical characteristics and genetics, our values and morals do not blend or interchange. Both my siblings and father have caused a lot of dilemmas and problems within the family such as excessive gambling and drinking. One problem that still exists, deals with the sixty thousand dollar robbery committed by someone who I no longer refer to as my sister, but as a criminal. She stole my mother’s money to do who knows what and till this day is still unresponsive and denies of the? theft when all evidence points to her. Family does not steal and lie from its members. Betrayal and dishonesty are qualities that do not belong in a family. Family is dependable and protects against the inhumanity within all people. Protection becomes susceptible to failure when an act of disloyalty starts from within. Although many people define a family by blood relations, an authentic family is one that does not inflict permanent pain and damage amongst its members. Acknowledging that a true family has problems, there also must be limits and boundaries. At the end of the day, family lives
Furthermore, not all family has to be related. People often think of their closest friends as family, especially if they have known each other for a long time. Sometimes people can relate more to their friends than their biological family. According to Grace Marguerite Williams, in an article titled “Family Does Not Have To Mean Blood Family”, “ Many times as a person becomes older, friends become family because you have more common interests with your friends than you do with your blood family” (Williams, Grace). Friends are often able to understand each other better than some family members. Consequently, we learn to rely on friends as if they were our actual family, thus we eventually begin considering them as such.
Family does not always mean being blood related, family is being with the people who knows your weaknesses and strengths and accepts them with all their heart. Family is like Baymax programming, not only it prevents us from hurting each other and other people but also the one who will take care of us every time we are hurt physically and emotionally. Family enlightens our insights in times of anger and grudge the one who’s always there to offer us love when in discomfort. Surrounding yourself with people you can call as your family can be the only thing you will ever need. Like Hiro, the support given to him by Tadashi’s friends which eventually became his, and the love that his aunt displayed throughout the movie.
There are many different definitions about what the family is. Different theoretical positions influence these variations. For example, the functionalist sociologist George Peter Murdock defines the family as “a social group characterized by common residence, economic co-operation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain
The word “family” is often used in connection with a person’s ancestry. Most families are based on kinship. Members belong to the family through birth, marriage, or adoption. Family plays the most vital role in our daily life and family is the finest thing that you can ever desire for. It’s the family who assists their child in hardships of life and give affection no matter what happens. Human personality reflects on what his /her family status is and what their families have taught them.
A family can be defined in many ways, but the common denominator in all is the love and fulfillment one gets by being surrounded by family members. Families can sometimes be at odds with each other, but the strain of this type of relationship usually creates an upsetting feeling to the people involved. People want others to rely on, talk to, do things with, share, love, embrace, and be part of. No matter what the family dynamic is the qualities the word family has will remain the same, as time goes by, and life evolves once again for every person living their
According to Swartz and Scott (2009), family is defined as a group of people related to each other by blood, marriage, adoption or being sexually open in a relationship. The
