The American Family Where We Are Today By Stephanie Coontz

For over centuries, the term family has been specifically used to mean a group of people that consist of two parents and their children. The word is originally from the Latin word Familia, which means household or family. Although this word is known all over the world, it can have a different context to each person. In the United States alone, family can be referred to two adults and their children, a single-parent household, extended relatives, and a structure of more than two parents. Despite how the family structure may look like within a household, it plays a major role in life, either directly or indirectly.

Two American Families was a documentary filmed over the course of twenty years. Hosted by Bill Moyers and published by PBS as a part of the PBS Frontline series, it focused on the financial ups and downs of two families living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ordinary families both, the Neumanns and the Stanleys faced financial trouble starting in 1992, when Tony Neumann and Claude Stanley had each recently lost their manufacturing jobs. The Neumanns (an African American family) and the Stanleys (a white family) would face struggles throughout the next twenty years which can be related to by nearly any middle class family you might approach; however, unlike most, these families’ struggles were documented.

Family is a single word that has many different meanings and definitions. In a short definition we can say family is a group of people that are consist of parents, children, grandparents that are living together in a household. In other word we can say family can be defined in several ways depending on each person what he or she are experiencing in her or his life from their family. If we look at the poem written by Linda Hogan and the poem written by Robert Hayden, we will see different definitions for family depending on their background and where they grew up. People have different understanding about what the family means. Its mean ’ we must accept our parents and we must feel a shamed and understand what love and sacrifices they gave us when we were children and be aware the family could be not just bound by blood.

Family comes in all shapes and sizes; color, similarities and differences, but at the heart of it all, family is the solidified foundation to one belonging and feeling loved.

Family has so many different meanings to every individual who has answers this question. Trying to find a general definition for this term is impossible. Everyone has a different concept of what a family is, what I would consider my family is far more stretch than a typical American family. Coming from a Latin culture my family’s considered grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, friends and down to the last pet. I experienced culture shock when I entered middle school to see what some of my when they referred to family they meant just their parents. Family has a very complex definition. It can be stripped of its value by being described simply as a blood connection, something with only dna binding you to each-other. It can be associated as a money source or just strangers that live in the same vicinity as you. Family could just be a never ending list of people who you don’t truly know or seem to care about.
