I would like to become a DNP Family Nurse Practitioner. The requirements I will need for this degree will be RN licensure, followed by a BSN program, then a Nurse Practitioner doctorate program in family medicine. The road that will take me to this goal will be graduating Columbia Basin College with an ADN, take and pass the NCLEX, followed by one year of clinical experience. I will then apply to an online BSN program, preferably CBC, but I could apply to WGU, or WSU. An online BSN program may take one year to eighteen months to complete. When there are Nurse Practitioners that are filling in for doctors, this can improve quality. The way that this takes place is to have these individuals work with select amounts of patients. A baby was just born at 26 weeks gestation. Just over half the normal 40 weeks a baby should stay inside the mother. The baby is immediately whisked away and taken to be evaluated and prepared for a long journey ahead. Ever since I could remember babies and the nursery at the hospital have fascinated me. Whenever we would go visit a friend who had a baby, I would find myself peaking over the windows into the nursery. I have known for a while that working in the neonatal intensive care unit is what I want to pursue. Recently I have been looking into nurse practitioners and furthering my education beyond my BSN. Being able to care for these infants in the most critical stages of their life, and being able to provide them the support they need to survive outside the womb seems so satisfying . Neonatal nurse practitioners have years of education, deep history, detailed job description, high demands and some legal issues.

It is clear that Family Nursing Practitioner Program is increasingly becoming valuable for nurses competing for the best job positions. Pursuing a FNP program can open many doors to students in the field of nursing as well as nursing administrators. Additionally it can result into higher salaries throughout the entire career of an individual.

They are expected to perform comprehensive healthcare services from caring for acute illnesses, injuries, and immunization to the treatment of chronic conditions (Cusack, et al., 2015).

The role of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) can be described as diverse and challenging; while at the same time, rewarding and the mainstay for future healthcare. Like many early nursing pioneers, breaking misperceptions by focusing on national recognition and public awareness of the role continues to be an emphasis of today’s NP. Both similarities and distinct differences can be seen between nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and physicians. The nursing model, whether as a registered nurse (RN) or NP, has holistic care at the core of patient care.

The Family Nurse Practitioner or (FNP) encompasses many areas of practice from clinic to acute care. Many FNPs choose to specialize in clinical areas based on expertise and experience. Other FNPs may choose to practice within a certain population or area based off of scope of practice and degree of independence. As an FNP, I choose to focus my expertise to serve the underserved populations in Colorado, which could be in an outpatient, clinic or acute care setting.

The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. There are four types of Advanced Practice Nurse roles, the nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, and certified nurse-midwife. The Family Nurse Practitioner is the advanced practice role that will be discussed. According to Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, and O 'Grady (2014) the primary care NP provides care for patients in diverse settings, including community-based settings such as private and public practices, acute, and long-term care settings across the life span (pg. 396). Physicians readily accepted the role of the Nurse Practitioner, working together to improve patient outcomes and safety.
