Because of the opposing cultures and ideas that collide in the mind of Richard Rodriguez, his arguments tend to break boundaries of traditional philosophical writing. As a Catholic, a homosexual, a Mexican immigrant, and an intellectual, the meaning of family values can differ significantly from one aspect of his life to the next. Parent and Community involvement does not occur overnight. I feel that schools must make parent and community involvement a priority, valuing and accepting each other’s differences. Schools, families and communities must work together to support all students in a learning environment to ensure every student is a successful learner. Positive family and school involvement fosters a partnership among my school encouraging students to reach their highest potential academically and in life. Parent and community involvement does not mean stay-at-home mothers coming to school to help as needed, or a businessman stopping by to see events occurring on campus. The role of school, family and community involvement is a partnership incorporating goal-oriented activities for all grade levels linked to academic success and student growth.

Families are involved in their children’s learning through many different means. Parents are greeted by the kindergarten teachers at morning drop off and at the end of the day for dismissal and if any information needs to be disclosed or discussed the teachers and parents will take that opportunity to communicate with each other. Communication to families is also done through letters that go home whenever there is important information that needs to be shared. Society may look down on people if they do not live by what society thinks is correct. For example if a persons values are corrupt then society will look down on that person, but if a person has real high morals then society will think that they are fake of just a “goodie”. After obtaining my recent degree in Anthropology from the University of Georgia and securing a job as a campaign assistant for a candidate running for U.S. senate, I have been assigned the task to help my candidate write the best family values policy platform he can. To accomplish this goal, I have interviewed one participant, nineteen-year-old Brandon, about his kinship system. This will help me gather information on the social issues of a family and family values. To give you a quick introduction, Brandon is my boyfriend and someone who I have known for almost a year. I am quite familiar with his family. Brandon grew up in a single-parent home after his parents divorced when he was six. They are not alone here; in 2012, there were 11.2 million single-parent households documented (BOOK pg 366). In this home, he was raised primarily by his mother, and lived there along with his older sister Chrissy Dale. Brandon has a bilateral descent group, meaning the relationships in his family are recognized through both his mother and fathers’ sides of the family (LECTURE). His kinship system is also homogamic, meaning all of the couples in his family married from inside their social group. (LECTURE). I was born in the late 1950s and spent my childhood in the 1960s and teen years in the 1970s. My upbringing was shaped very much, by how I was taught and raised. My parents were both members of a conservative religious organization and so with that said I learned this way of thought. Working in an elementary school, I have had several times when I have met someone with a different worldview than mine. For instance, I have had students that are Jehovah's Witness. Some challenges that I have had relating to those students are centered around holidays activities and birthday parties. One of my students was not allowed to participate in any holiday activities or birthday parties. Her parents did not celebrate holidays or birthdays and they did not want her to participate. If we had a special Christmas program, I would have to arrange for her to go to a different classroom. My principle would let her come help her during any special events.

No one has the true opportunity to pick to whom they are born to. They also do not have a say as to how they are raised. In a lovely fantasy, one could say that they did, but realistically speaking, no. The way that one views the world as an adult takes a huge part in how their parents raised them. If they were raised to discriminate against minorities, then more likely than not, they too will do the same; if they were raised in an environment of drugs and alcohol, then a good chance that they will go down the same path as well. How someone is brought up is important because it reflects to how they act in their older years. This can be either fortunate or detrimental to the character’s relationship and a community. Family has assumed a key part in molding me into the individual I am today. However, as I have matured, I have developed my own standards in view of my comprehension of the world. My family 's qualities are anchored firmly on religion and we attempt to live the values that the Bible lays out. I have certain objectives I need to accomplish and my qualities and morals have advanced to incorporate them while attempting to keep up those morals I learned when I was young. There since have been occurrences whereby I have gotten in difficulties and I need to settle on what I know to be right and what serves my self-interest. I can 't assert that I generally make the best choices. Yet, I pride myself on being principled. Usually, I adhere to a specific way on the off chance that I feel that it is right with my beliefs. My struggle with is with the whisper in my ear attempting to occupy me from my previously chosen way, however I am persistent, resolute, and take after what I have confidence in to be right to me. I rarely make serious ethical violations but I will not hesitate to own my actions.

When raising a child one is taught values by their families that they feel are important for their child to have. I believe that family values consist of certain actions and qualities that are important to a family to uphold. Values that are important in my family are honesty, trust and to have respect for others. Each of these values is equally important in my family. They played a big role into making me the person I am now.
