The key to learning is having enough sleep and feeding the brain correctly, there's some food for thought. The current meals provided at Corvallis High School in our cafeteria are generally premade meals that are frozen and then reheated, the meals are crass and foul tasting. The majority of students at our school usually drive to Hamilton to eat so they can avoid the meals that are provided in the cafeteria. “Research shows students learn better when they’re well nourished. Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, more alertness, faster information processing and improved health leading to better school attendance, according to registered dietitian Elisa Zied, author of “Feed Your Family Right.”’ The meals provided
Since 2009 Schools have been improving there healthy choices of food like fresh fruits and salad bars, but those foods take longer to eat (Hellmich). Turning school lunches into an actual sit down meal rather than a feeding frenzy is a good way of improving health (Parker-Pope). Students usually have less than 20 minutes to eat lunch which makes it less likely for them to choose the healthy choice (Elsevier). Kids often like to eat there favorite foods first, not giving them enough time to eat the healthy food (Hellmich). An increase in school lunches could encourage students to eat the healthier choice(5 Elsevier). School nutritionist suggest that students need to have atlas 20 minutes to eat (Hellmich). Research shows that when people consume meals faster they take in more calories because they get hungry sooner (Chen). The shorter lunch periods are starting to lead to more and more obese and overweight kids ( Hellmich). Doctors are saying there are more and more kids getting diabetes and other illnesses due to the lunches and something needs to be done about it
School lunches are not the epitome of meals in the world. Raising the level of nutritional output would highly increase the healthiness of the student’s body. For example, if a child were to drink only water at school the health benefits would help that student, just by cutting out the sugar and the calorie intake. If schools were to serve grilled chicken instead of fried chicken, the student would not have that extreme carb intake just from the fried part alone. Chicken and vegetables should be the entrée for most school lunches, of course, this does not allow for a great variety of meals, but the healthiness of the students would increase over time and could possibly be the healthiest thing they eat that day, but the only thing that they eat at all. The poverty in Mississippi is abundant, which may mean that children do not get three square meals a day, but maybe only one, which is at school. Therefore, the best way to affect student’s healthiness is by putting good, nutritious, and energizing food on the plate in front of
The rule should be changed to, “ Students are allowed to eat healthy, approved by their teacher, snack foods during 3rd hour every day. Exception, teachers may revoke certain students privileges to eating in class, if it proves to be a disruption, or make a mess and do not clean up after themselves.” Eating certain foods can improve brain energy and focus, improving success in school. Curt Pedersen wrote an article, “Foods For Mental Energy and Focus” stating that foods such as blueberries, dark chocolate, and many more. Genesis, from Food For Thought, states that some students have trouble focusing on an empty stomach. Not having enough for breakfast or lunch can negatively affect students learning and concentration abilities. Certain students may not get enough food at lunch to sustain them through the day, especially if they do not eat breakfast, or have a fast metabolism and need more food to keep them going, than what is served to them at lunch. If these students do not have time in the morning to eat, at least they can bring something to snack on during the day. There are many positive outcomes of allowing students to have a small snack in the middle of the school
As we all know, everyone wants longer lunch periods because it is a time where they can socialize and don’t have to learn, but there is also another advantage to having longer lunch periods. Most people don’t know this, but having a longer lunch period allows you to receive more of the nutrients your body needs to function properly and to its’ full potential. In a report in 2014 by the School Nutrition Association, they reviewed 1001 students and found stunning information that showed,”... students with less than 20 minutes… 13 percent less of their entrees… 12 percent less of their vegetables… 10 percent less of their milk compared.. 25 mins.” (Paragraph 5, Source 3). This proves that when students have a shorter time to eat, they will not
Cause 1: What causes the poor academic performance in children due to food insecurity is that they do not eat breakfast. The saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day is not just folk lore or a buzz phrase. The article by Sheila Terry and Kimberly Kerry, “Classroom Breakfast: Helping Maryland Students Make the Grade” published in the March 2000 issue of the Maryland State Department of Education, reports that “over a two-year period, classroom breakfast schools showed a 22% improvement in that score, [MSPAP test], compared to a 13% improvement for control schools
Grades K-5 are served a maximum of 650 calories, grades 6-8 700 calories, and grades 9-12 receive a maximum of 850 calories (“Federal Nutrition Standards for School Meals”). This leaves many students hungry. While it is hard to accommodate each child individually, your average active child that is involved in sports and other extra-curricular activities, is going to require more calories to maintain their weight than an overweight or obese child who needs to lose weight. Left hungry and unfulfilled, those student will move on to vending machines and a la carte to satisfy their hunger. Limiting the amount of calories served doesn’t necessarily solve the issue. Eating more calories than necessary of a healthy food choice, is a much better alternative than eating the right amount of calories but choosing a poor food
The importance of a healthy breakfast cannot be underestimated. A child who is undernourished in the morning will not be functional for her class until lunch. Also, schools can act as supporters of positive, healthy behaviors by offering nutritious breakfasts such as fruit and yogurt, versus the fast food breakfasts some adolescents might grab, if they get breakfast at all. Many school districts are beginning earlier and earlier in the day, and students are simply not hungry enough or do not get up early enough in the morning for breakfast, leaving them starving by 10am. Being able to grab breakfast in study hall can thus prevent many potential academic and nutritional problems.
As a result of the bad food, students do not eat in the cafeteria. They walk out of the cafeteria without eating. They can’t focus on their work because they are hungry. Students survive on snacks and junk food, which is also unhealthy.
To begin with, hour lunches will offer tutoring for those who need it, and extra time to work. Also, with the approval of teachers you can study and eat in a classroom. Some students can't stay after school so this is a perfect opportunity. Following, students only have thirty minutes in lunch, therefore they rush to eat. Some student do not even have enough time to finish eating. On the other hand, there will be club meetings where
Learning information depletes the brain's supply of glucose. It is important to refuel children's glucose levels with a healthy lunch. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean sources of protein are options that are highly effective in improving academic performance. It is scientifically proven that after a child eats a large, non-healthy meal, they feel more tired due to the body's process of digestion. A student eating significant amounts of less nutritional food can be harder to digest and make their bodies work harder. A healthy lunch can give children the energy they need to stay focused, pay attention in class, and learn the information presented to them in their classes after lunchtime.
It is lacking quality and supplements that energize the body. The lunches given at schools are poorly thought of and has no usage of vitamins. Lunch is an important meal of the day because that what keeps the students going and keeping them focused. Lunch should give them the energy to finish the day strong. Usually when a student continues classes after lunch, they are mostly drained. Their brain doesn’t function quickly as it’s supposed to and they are tired. If they were given the vitamins they needed they would be able to finish the day without any sign of
Not only are students scoring better, but they’re becoming more energetic. Teachers often complain about students who fall asleep in class, yet schools are providing low nutritional value foods that contribute to students having low energy. Greater nutritional value foods provide a more steady supply of energy for the students. By increasing their energy levels, this ensures that the majority of students can remain focused in class, improving their overall
This is very true because on the days where I have skipped lunch because it was not appealing, I was not able to pay attention in class and participate in discussions as usual. On schools where good food is provided, you can see that all the students are really excited to get back to class after lunch and that they are ready to learn something new. On the contrary, in schools were unappetizing foods are served, students get back to class looking very nervous, usually not paying attention in class and being very short tempered. This underlines the importance for a student to eat lunch before they go to the next
I believe that we, Prism Education Center’s students, require snack time. Healthy, organic foods help the mind function better, as well as absorb more information. In school, children can absorb loads more information on a full stomach, whereas hungry kids may be more focused on hushing the growling in their stomachs than paying
In an article written by Grace Chen, she describes that the intake of food is vital when we educate young kids. She explains what happens to the body when the proper nutrients are not being consumed and what these paths may lead to. According to the Society for Neuroscience, studies show that diets with high levels of saturates fats may impair learning and memory (Chen). Chen also include that these types of foods are usually cheaper and they are much easier to get a hold of. These types of foods are also the kinds that are being feed to our students during break and this causes then to crash instead of keep them awake or ready for learning.
