Figueroa’s Framework is a tool used in examining the sociocultural factors influencing equity and access to sport and physical activity. It is made up of five levels – individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural, and cultural. These levels relate back to the idea of access and equity to sport – the ability to play and the access to the same opportunities (Amezdroz, et al., 2010). I will discuss the impact that the individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels have had on my experiences and performances in tennis this term and make recommendations on how to maintain or improve my experiences and performances in tennis.
The individual level of Figueroa’s Framework refers to the factors that affected my sports performance which based on my own attitudes, values, beliefs, and experiences. Having had past experience in tennis positively impacted my performance as it gave me essential knowledge of the rules, and allowed me to begin development of skills prior to this unit. My previous tennis experience stretches back to grade 7, where I played tennis for inter-school sport. With the help of an experienced friend, I was able to improve greatly and pick up key tennis skills. Once entering high school, I had multiple occasions in which I had the opportunity and access to improve my tennis skills, including during HPE and Wednesday sport. This prior experience is extremely relevant in my tennis performance this term for a number of reasons. It gave me understanding of
Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Some of these skills include communication, teamwork, discipline, work ethic, dedication, leadership, and numerous more that will help them in their personal and work
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have
Gender inequality in professional tennis is a real and alarming issue, from the pay gap between mens' and womens' tennis players to the low media coverage of women's professional tennis. This issue even goes as far as how differently tennis commentators discuss and analyze mens tennis as opposed to how they discuss and analyze womens tennis. When commentators discuss men's tennis they solely focus on the skill of the players, but when they discuss women's tennis they place more importance on the appearance of the female players, rather than their skill. This instance of gender inequality in professional tennis is further exacerbated by the differences in advertisements for male tennis players and female tennis players. The advertisements involving male tennis players display their athleticism and tennis abilities, whereas the advertisements including female tennis players are appearance-focused, with the females often wearing little clothing. This is corroborated by the popular belief that focusing on the physical appearance of female athletes is the only way in which generating money from women's professional sports is distinctly possible (Fink, 2015, p. 338). Female professional tennis players train just as hard as the men do, thus the gender inequality that exists in the sport is not necessarily a result of how women perform on the court. It is rather a result of how society perceives women playing in professional sports overall, which the mass media is partially to blame
While looking through the three lenses of family, biogenetic, sociolegal, and role lens, it is very hard to limit yourself to only agree with one. However, while studying these three ideas I have come to the consensus that the most prominent and practical lens to look through is the sociolegal lens. Although one cannot discredit the family values of others, throughout my lifetime I have experienced sociolegal family lifestyles. An area in my life that I have seen this lens play a huge role is throughout my tennis career. A unique experience that I have been able to be apart of throughout my college adventure revolves around Mizzou athletics. Playing tennis here at the University has been one of the most rewarding
The institutional level of Figueroa’s framework level examines the institutions within society that affect sport and physical activity. Institutions such as schools, community groups, sporting clubs, and religious groups are able to help shape positive attitudes to sport and physical activity. Schools feature prominently when discussing how people’s early attitudes towards sport are shaped.
Figueroa’s Framework for Examining Equity and Access in Sport and Physical Activity in Australian Society
* Equity affects nearly all aspects of our lives none less than sports such as beach volleyball. Sport is an integral part of today’s society and as such, sport should be organised, participated in and distributed in an equitable manner. The aim of equity in sports is to encourage all people, regardless of age, gender, disability or ethnic origin to participate in and develop their potential within sport. Disputes over equity have been apparent in our society for hundreds of years, over such things as gender, religion or race. A framework developed by Figueroa deals with equity. It consists of five levels that link together – individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural. The following paragraphs demonstrate the use of
The Olympic Games leads the world in showcasing a variety of foremost winter and summer sports events. These principal sports include tennis, a racket, non-contact sport that can be played with one or two players on each side of the court. Tennis is played recreationally and competitively across the world. Tennis originated in England during the 19th century, but its role an olympic sport exhibits how it has reached numerous audiences worldwide. Tennis’ popularity suggest it is diverse in terms of racial, gender and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The institutional level of Figueroa’s framework level examines the institutions within society that affect sport and physical activity (Kirk, 2004). Institutions such as schools, community groups, sporting clubs, and religious groups are able to help shape positive attitudes to sport and physical activity. The accessibility of aerobics classes and equipment are very limited compared to many other sports. In the Brisbane area there are only 3 aerobics classes compared to the 1219 rugby league classes (Google maps, 2013). This is a staggering 400 times more and is very influential to the fact that participation levels are lower and can be the reason why many people view it as a dance class due to the lack of availability of facilities. There are also no aerobics competitions within Australia and this is another factor in influencing people’s perceptions. Schools feature prominently when discussing how people’s early attitudes towards sport are shaped. Some schools with strong sporting traditions reinforce participation in sport. The sports that students are encouraged to participate in can depend on the school’s history and traditions, the facilities and equipment available, and the expertise of the
As a male there are many levels of Peter Figueroa Framework, that affects the question will I dance again? Constructed over five separate levels: Individual, Interpersonal, Institutional, Structural and Cultural, these areas are used to investigate the ways in which inequities challenge the area of sport and physical activity (Weeblycom, 2016). The two most prominent levels that impact my decision are the Structural Level being policies, funding, media, development programs, marketing and secondly the Institutional Level encompassing my community, school, facilities, rules and religion (Hede et al, 2010, pg. 299). Hede et al states that the Structural level of Figueroa’s Framework includes the influence of government, business and the media.
Community tennis refers to the USTA’s effort of giving every on the US access to the sport. It is focused on giving people the tools to go out and participate, along other members of the association, in a variety of tennis activities. Across the US the association works with the 10s and under divisions all the way up to senior adult divisions. Really anyone with the desire to play regardless of age, sex, skill level, or disabilities is given the opportunity to partake. Player development on the other hand, is more concerned with the development of world-class players from the US. Through coaching, education, player identification, and player services the USTA Player Development
Sociology is the study of the social worlds that people create, maintain and change through their relationships with each other. Sports in American society have a major impact on these social worlds and culture throughout the past century. Sports have an impact on social interaction, social structure and the shared ways of life and shared understandings that people develop as they live together. Compared to other forms of physical activities, sports are defined as “well established, officially governed competitive physical activities in which participants are motivated by internal and external rewards.” A critical sociological look into an individual’s development through sport is defined as a Sportography. Darion Scott, born and raised in Compton, California showed me through an interview of his sports history, how sports influenced his life in a positive way and provided a window into his culture and society.
This affects me directly as I want to pursue a future in tennis through college and high school. Many sports, like tennis can be broken down into large scale social forces such as how many people at a poverty ridden school play football and basketball or as how many students will play golf for a larger private school. There are many stereotypes even in sports based upon this even such as size, ethnicity, gender and social upbringings. One example of someone to go outside of these assumptions and prejudices was Jackie Robinson who was the first African American man to play professional baseball or how the Serena Williams as an African American woman became the world champion in tennis for three years in a row. Especially in high school now many cliques are based on if you play sports and what sports you play. Track and cross country, football and baseball, golf and tennis can all typically be seen played by people in the same social
When a person of a specific gender enters a non-traditional sport for their gender/sex, many social and moral issues will arise challenging that person involved in that particular sport. The intentions of the individual will be questioned as well as their personal interest in the sport. Before any of these questions are asked, there must be a redefinition of gender roles, femininity, and masculinity. In order for a person to enter a non-traditional sport for their gender/sex without being criticize about gender morality, society must set flexible definitions for femininity and masculinity.
Sports, admittedly, have had a huge impact on our culture. Some of us even use sports as an excuse to gather our family for some quality time with each other, whether they just hangout for the sake of entertainment or engage in a meaningful conversation full of fervid passion when discussing spectacular plays, athletes, and coaches. However, people talk about the multitude of positive traits that sports are associated with, one must be informed about the abundance of issues that sports face; issues that keep sports from being what we want it to be- free from malicious intent and more along the lines of a peaceful collaboration perpetuated by authentic equality; coming together to proclaim our love for the game. Inequality, for example, is
