EDC 365C - Final Project Teaching Philosophy
I believe that with motivation and guidance, children of all backgrounds can harbor success in the educational world and receive the skills they need to have a successful and prosperous life. It is a teacher’s duty to encourage lifelong learning, consider individual learning styles and aptitudes, and self-reflect on how to improve. My experiences as an engineer, a person of color, a pre-service teacher, and a STEM advocate have culminated together to form my educational values and philosophy.
Lifelong learning is fostered when the teacher is a mentor and coach who shares an enthusiasm for learning. By demonstrating that fun and creativity are parts of learning, students will be able to find joy in learning. Instead of a behaviorist classroom of skill and drill and motivation based learning, a constructivist classroom is what I plan to implement. I hope to build a relationship with every student I teach and let them know that their individual talents and personalities are appreciated. I believe that every student can learn when they are accepted for whom and where they are in their educational journey. Every student has potential to learn and should not be discouraged by personal setbacks. I hope to inspire Dweck’s philosophy of a growth mindset in my students where they believe that they can learn through dedication and hard work. Effective learning requires collaboration between teacher, students, and parents grounded in mutual trust and respect. Therefore I believe that the teacher should also have a “growth mindset” and take feedback from students, peers, and parents in order become a better
