Also, during the planning of her schedule, she can eliminate the activities that are not really a must to join in order to plan a looser schedule. However, if Janet cannot follow the schedule, her previous situation (i.e. unbalanced life) may happen again which makes the schedule become useless. Besides, Janet may still overestimate her ability in planning her activities and make a tight schedule same as before. Another stressor Janet faced is “academic demands”. After she knew she had bad results in studies, she felt overwhelmed. She thinks that she did not understand anything taught in those failed courses and as those were foundation courses, it’s definitely hopeless to pass the new and re-taken courses this semester. This stressor is very common among students especially those who are not very talented in learning like Janet. She may even don’t understand the basic knowledge of those subjects, which makes her further feels difficult to understand the things taught afterwards. To prevent this situation, she should first pay attention in class. She should not use a mobile phone nor do any other unrelated things as it may distract her attention in the class. She also has to take notes while lecturers are teaching in order to prevent herself forgetting the things taught in class immediately. She presented with anxiety, academic concern, and depressed mood. She reported that she has a habit of avoiding things that increases anxiety. She noted that her strategy in avoiding anxiety provoking situations also makes her feel stuck. She reported that she can be self-critical that it is difficult for her to motivate herself. She reported that she has been missing her classes in an attempt to avoid a stressful situation.
The anxiety and stress will then increase when students compare themselves with peers. They see that their peers are better off financially; thus, affecting self esteem or belief in success. In this stress one can identify the acute stressor as when the student seeks financial resources on campus. Allocating more time towards having fun rather than focusing on schoolwork or studying in general also affects student’s time management. Since they have every opportunity of flexibility with minimal boundaries involved, there is the urge to enjoy the newfound liberty, and as a result, neglect of assignments, deadlines bypassed and incompetent test results. For that reason, the commitment to study is only realized when exams are approaching thereby causing panic to the student as the realization that class materials have not been covered starts to arise.
According to Lupien, McEwan, Gunnar, and Heim (2009), going off to college involves significant adjustments to their daily routines; sleeping and eating habits, time-management skills, and stress levels will be altered in one way or another. First-year students have to adjust to the new school environment, different social settings, and new schedules, all without the help and guidance from their parents, who have been there for them for eighteen years. Over 30% of college freshman report that they feel overwhelmed (Klainberg, Ewing, & Ryan, 2010), where some students even opt to work as they juggle their class and work schedules. Some students work at a job or study harder than others, but they are all trying to get degrees so maybe one day they will have meaningful and significant lives. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved in society in a positive manner, allowing contribution of their ideals and values to others.
It is important to know how to manage stress in academic life as it is learning about how to balance work and academic life. It is also important for students after graduating and creates self-awareness such as weakness in them.
Time management was a vital element that I had to incorporate into my daily routine. My entire family had to adjust to the new stressors that were introduced with my decision of returning to school. The normal routine that they had grown accustomed to was no longer practical. It was difficult for them to accept that I was no longer the primary source of everyday responsibilities. Standards are different with every job, but success in a field depends on willpower and perseverance. Stress affects everyone on different levels, where some thrive off stress and many do not. The symptoms of stress are slight, where most people might not even realize that they are even showing symptoms, so learning to recognize even the slightest symptoms may prove to be beneficial. After recognizing the symptoms of stress, these students and everyone else could take measures to relax or perform activities that relieve stress. These slight side effects, that may not be noticeable, are impairing individuals mentally, and if symptoms remain untreated, then physical side effects occur as well. Choosing to do well is stressful because it is guaranteed that there is a mountain of work in the way before an individual reaches success.
