“I was young and dumb,” said Kim Spight, a forty-year-old FedEx sales manager who became pregnant her freshman year at Howard University. Ms. Spight had the mindset to succeed so instead of dropping out of college to raise her daughter, she kept studying until she received her masters degree and now manages a 12-person sales team in Dallas. Meanwhile, her daughters father continues to work odd jobs and live at home with his mother (Cauchon, 2013). Can you believe at one point in time this reality wasn’t heard of or seemed impossible to achieve? Gender roles continue to transform year after year in relationships where men have began welcoming in the ideas of being a stay at home dad while the mom is the breadwinner. Women have the capability of climbing up the ladder in the workplace and even a little change has swept through different cultures. Let’s take a leap into the past to see just how gender roles have transformed history in the workplace, culture, and marriage.

Why should your gender determine how to live your life? Throughout my whole existence, I’ve been told to act and dress like a “girl” by most of my family. I never understood why it was such a huge deal, until I was much older. Gender expectations are still around today and they still continue to be affect the way men and women are treated. A man that acts within his own gender role is praised, but a woman is forced to stay in a certain limit within her role. Men and women shouldn't let their gender define themselves and it should not pressure them to live up to a certain standard created by society.

Men collectively choose to receive psychological help less than their women counterparts. The sex distinction in help-seeking behavior occurs even when both women and men are equally afflicted. If male help-seeking behavior is to be increased, the reason for its neglect must be considered. Increasing our awareness of factors that may deter men from exploring psychological guidance may help in accessing reluctant men, allowing them to see past their preconceived ideology of masculinity.

I have realized that culture has played a significant role in creating a perception for myself and my family. The Pakistani culture that my parents were raised up in, they have tended to understand it and be able to continue their life with those ideas. Therefore, when the topic of gender is thought about, upon many experiences in my life, I know I have had many barriers and even situations where I did not agree with regarding gender.

3. Why is our parent’s depiction of these roles important to how we see ourselves?

Society has institutionalized gender roles since the beginning of time, a common one is that women are the nurturers and housekeepers, while men are the breadwinners of household. In spite of centuries, and fighting for women 's rights, such as the right to vote in the late 1920s. Women still have roles to fulfill, even in a modern society that is dominated by a virtual world. Education and gender are significant in dictating the participation as well as limitations of women in social media. As a child I never really knew much about gender roles and stereotypes, I just went with it. As I grew older I was forced to face reality and deal with the gender roles and stereotypes. I wasn’t a masculine kid and always had feminine features and attributes. I never liked playing rough, I didn’t like to get in trouble or cuss. This resulted in me being teased and called gay in elementary school. I had to fake a persona in order to not be bullied and teased everyday. As a collective, our group wanted to see if we could find a relationship with the major one chooses to study and their gender identity. Many components are considered when making personal choices. Sometimes in our society, gender roles can take over and kids are subconsciously learning that boys and girls must act a certain way, be interested in certain things, and be “masculine” or “feminine.” It’s degrading. When I was young, I always wondered why girls get to wear pink, purple, and flowery outfits while boys are given blue and gray ones, or why the man’s surname is adopted by the woman upon marriage and not the other way around. Imagine not being able to attend school as a child. Imagine how much of an impact that would have on the rest of a human life. Everyday in the region of the Middle East, women are prohibited in some areas from attending school. Without basic knowledge, they cannot obtain jobs and their health conditions are lowered. Even if education is offered, it does not have a positive impact because it is of little quality. Despite the deeply rooted gender roles in the Middle East, women should be offered the same education as men.
