The journey towards gender equality has existent for more than a century, tracing its roots from the suffragettes of the 19th century and the prehistoric attempts to reduce gender based prejudice. Similar to other forms of discrimination, gender biasness emanates from cultural believes and norms that organize human race into stereotypes and use the same stereotypes to determine capability, position as well as societal roles. Historically, the male stereotype has been applauded, assigned to certain roles both at home and at the workplace, leaving the females to only participate as subordinates hardly holding leadership position. However, with the continued feminism actions, the line between gender roles continue to blur, with Hillary Clinton’s attempt to secure the presidential seat in the US marked as the greatest achievement. In essence, accordance with civilization of man, gender is expected to be a non-issue in assigning roles in the workplace. However, the practicability of this presumption remains adamant following the underlying traditions, perceptions and believes that associate gender with individual capability. It is not up for debate whether women are discriminated against in the workplace, it is evident in census data; in 2013, among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 78 percent of what men were paid. It is said that the organizations that are pro-equal pay, including some unions, support the idea that the government should set wages for all jobs. To the contrary, the organizations that are proponents of equal pay are not for job wages being set by the government-they wish to have the discrimination taken out of pay scales from within the company. Commonly, this pay gap is attributed to the fact that women in the United States are still expected to attend to familial obligations over work.

Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. There are many different ways and forms of discrimination and they are all wrong. Discrimination is something that we need to put an end to, especially the discrimination of women. The discrimination of women is overlooked and irrelevant to most people. According to a poll of 2000 employees commissioned by Investors in People, 8 in 10 women (83%) in full-time employment believe that gender discrimination still exists in the workplace. Women have experienced discrimination in history, school, and in the workplace; because of this discrimination society has viewed women as inferior to men.
Freedom and equality are ideas this country has had for centuries that have evolved over time. In 1776, what Thomas Jefferson meant by “all men are created equal”, is that white males are dominant in society. Women are treated worse than men and slaves treated worse than women. People that weren’t of the “superior” race/gender of a white male were typically treated as if they were less. Women and African-Americans aren’t being treated as bad today, but they’re still being treated worse than the white males of society. Gender identity and Gender Oppression opinions have varied throughout the years. By this I mean the awkwardness of seeing gay or lesbian characters in movies or tv shows have been decreasing throughout the years, or has it? Seeing movies displaying different genders than just male and female have varied reactions from many people. Despite the setting of the book being in this dystopian futuristic world, gender identity and gender equality is subliminally present and plays a key role in the book. Gender Identity is restricted to just straight male and females in both schools and the Sixers group as well as gender oppression can be seen through influential characters.
All men and women were created equal. However, this obvious truth is not universally shared. Fortunately, there is a very real fight for gender equality that we are currently engaged in, and a participant in that fight that holds a fundamental role are non-governmental organizations (NGOs). NGOs exist as private, voluntary organizations that function without government restriction and bias because they are not for profit and not funded by the government. These organizations coordinate strategies in order to “perform a variety of services and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information.” These core characteristics of NGOs meld and cooperate to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. These organizations are actually quite effective in achieving their missions of promoting women’s rights and gender equality. Women’s rights NGOs led the General Assembly to adopt the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women. Women’s rights NGOs advocate for the idea that women’s rights are included in human rights.

Present-day society should be growing in order to be conscious of individuals who voice themselves as male, bisexual, transgender, female, queer, intersex, lesbian, other, the list is unlimited. There is the nineteenth amendment which gave women the right to vote, the Title IX civil rights act which gave women an equal opportunity as men for education, and even now in 2016 there is Hillary Clinton who has and equal opportunity as her opposing male candidate, Trump in this year’s election (Women’s Rights Timeline 2). These are all examples of what America has achieved throughout the years in terms of women’s rights but even now with many laws in place to protect women’s rights, there is still gender discrimination that continues to limit Americas progression towards a more equally gender right country (Morabito 2016). Women today still face many struggles because just by being a woman alone can come at a disadvantage in many cases so although America has addressed some gender inequality issues in our history, we should also focus on the discrimination that women face daily merely for their gender (Morabito 2016).
Gender inequality or gender stratification is the unequal spreading of society’s wealth, power, and privilege between females and males. Whenever this issue is approached, evidence is provided that majority of women popularity are taken for granted and frowned upon as if women cannot do what men can do. This is proof that the oppressor vs. the oppressed is present throughout history; even in religious communities, some can date back to God’s creation. For example, it is written in the Bible, “To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your pain in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for you husband, and he will rule over you.” (Genesis 3:16).
