Greenhouse gases are the main causes of climate change. The sun emits sunlight which travels to earth causing it to warm up the surface, and then the heat is radiated back towards space. This normal cycle is interrupted by greenhouse gases that stop the heat from bouncing back into space(“Global Climate Change: Causes”). The gases absorb the heat and emit it back everywhere on earth. Because the gases are causing the temperature to rise, it is known as the greenhouse effect. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect are nitrous oxide(N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide(CO2)(“Overview of Greenhouse Gases”).

Climate change is defined as a change within climate patterns that is largely due to increasing levels of carbon emissions in our atmosphere. These emissions create a blanket like layer around the earth that creates a heat reflective surface. As the sun’s rays hit earth, normally it would be bounced back into space but the earth would still retain some heat from the rays that it was hit with. The emissions blanket creates a barrier that traps more rays within the atmosphere of the earth as heat rays have a harder time going through the blanket into space. There are those who argue that the rising levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases in our environment are as a direct result of human activities. Some activities that are at the top of the list include but are not limited to the burning of fossil fuels, the cutting down of our forest, these activities are causing significant and increasingly severe climate changes which include global warming. The two main gasses released are carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are two of the many gasses that are known as greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses are any gas that restricts the flow of heat and sunrays from escaping Earth’s atmosphere. Since the start of the industrial revolution, greenhouse gasses have been increasing drastically and have been causing an increase in the greenhouse gas effect. With the prevention of heat escaping Earth’s atmosphere, this can cause an increase in global surface temperatures. This can cause a change in our ocean levels, land structures, and the cleanliness of our air ("Greenhouse Gases," 2014).

There are four major gases that cause the greenhouse effect.  These chemicals are Chloroflourocarbons (CFC’s), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Methane (CH4).  “CFC’s destroy ozone molecules by the thousands, causing a smaller amount of ozone in the ozone layer.  This allows more UV rays hit the Earth’s surface, causing a slight increase of the Earth’s temperature.  The more ozone molecules destroyed, the more UV rays enter the Earth’s atmosphere, making the temperature even higher”(What Is The Greenhouse Effect).

The most significant greenhouse gas is water vapor, which plays an important role in regulating climate. The changes in water vapor from human activities such as irrigation and deforestation can affect temperatures on the Earth’s surface (source). The second, is carbon dioxide, which is one of the main reasons for global warming. An increase in carbon emission causes the planet to warm by intensifying the IR energy influx in greenhouse effect (source). Also, carbon dioxide emission comes from deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. The third, is ozone for where life exists on our planet. It absorbs the higher-energy emitted from the Sun before reaching the Earth’s surface (source). However, the ozone in normally seen as smog can cause health problems for humans, animals, and plants.

Climate change could be described as any process that causes adjustment to climate system be it a volcanic eruption to a change in the solar activity. Today, however, the phrase is most often used as climate change caused by humans. Climate change is also used commonly with another phrase – "global warming" – reflecting scientific observations of strong warming trends over the past century or so. Indicators like rising sea levels, retreating snow cover and glaciers, longer growing seasons and shifting wildlife has alarmed scientific community unanimously agreeing that the earth has warmed in the last century. Experts however are of the opinion that climate change is a more accurate phrase than global warming as the latter is just one component affecting the larger climate systems of the earth.
