The experiences I had in research was during my graduate program for a capstone project in which I designed a survey questionnaire for an newly proposed Golden Age Hospital (GAH) to be built in Orange County, California. This involves market research and segmentation to cater senior population in that area. Segmentation and positioning are two important concepts in marketing. While these terms are generally used in relationship to promotional activities, the term segmentation has relevance for market research as well. Segmentation involves dividing the larger universe of consumers or businesses into smaller units that represent more specific target audiences. Market research involves gathering information from audiences through tools that may range from focus groups to one-on-one interviews to broadly distributed surveys delivered via traditional mail, email, phone or online polling. Moreover, qualitative research efforts are those that do not provide statistically reliable information, yet the input can be useful in creating more formal, quantitative research. Qualitative research efforts might include such things as focus groups or interviews conducted in shopping malls. There are two types of research: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research is exploratory research – such as looking at and analysing people’s behaviours, values and opinions or aspirations. Types of qualitative research that are available are customer feedback, videos or interviews and open answer questions. 1. Qualitive research methods are based on aims and understanding the world through ideas, beliefs, practices and values, they do this by using the term meaning over measurement. Qualitive researchers try to understand society by analysing feeling and words rather than numbers and data. However unlike Quantitive researchers they use the scientific approach and believe that the world can be proved using number and percentages. I have chosen to use Qualitive research because I think it is a better way of understanding the world because I think it is the most appropriate way of knowing what people’s experiences and attitudes of the world are. For instance methods such as interviews, conversation and focus groups which create a nice environment for people to discuss their feelings and beliefs on a certain topic. With all the information you have gathered from a focus group, you then can take that information to create a hypothesis. Then from there you can come up with a theory; however it won’t necessarily prove anything to an exact it will only come from what we have all ready experienced in our lives. Whereas Qualitive approach would take a survey on how much, or how much and this method would then prove evidence by data. The use of rigorous qualitative research methods can enhance the development of quality measures the development and dissemination of comparative quality reports as well as quality improvement efforts , Sofaer’(2002) . Qualitative and quantitative research methods are two very broad research methods that are used in research to help answer questions that are being researched. Researchers all approach their methods differently and use various ways to determine the way they reach their research study. The differences in how this is done is what makes the study approach unique. Qualitative research for example gathers the information to come to a hypothesis where a quantitative research starts off with a hypothesis. Qualitative is in the form of non-structured in depth interviews and or group discussions. The information from these interviews and or groups observations is then recorded to see what is going on and see if there are patterns being formed. Whereas quantitative research is more structured using things like surveys, questionnaires and observed observations where mass amounts of people can be reached. That information is then input into a computer and statistically analyzed.
On behalf of the research, a qualitative study is an exploratory research that consist of reasons, ideas and opinions to generate a potential research question. The common methods of the research are group discussions, interviews, and observations to help conduct a reasonable hypothesis (Frost, 2011). In regard to the topic, a qualitative study will be examined based on the sampling strategies, design of the research, and the findings within the data.
The quantitative and qualitative research traditions can be thought of as distinct cultures marked by different values, beliefs, and norms. Qualitative research methods are complex meaningful analyses characterized by processes and meanings that are not measured in terms of mathematical measurements. It is also refer to a “standardized questionnaires that administer to individuals or household which are identified through various forms of sampling usually sampling, and next is the data collection step” (Choy, 2014:99). This essay will critically examine the differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. Indeed it will compare the difference between the two research and how they are used, the ontological orientation of those research’s and the different preoccupation.
