It is not a surprise that television media affects adolescents. There are several programs geared toward young people that give a negative view on what it is like to be a teenager/emerging adult. These shows are geared toward a younger audience, but have more mature content that is not suitable for children under a certain age. Some of these shows deal with teen pregnancies, drug use, and relational issues – all of which are important to talk about – but the manner in which they are shown, is not suitable for a younger audience. I chose to review the show Gossip Girl. Originally a book by Cecily von Ziegesar the show came to prime-time television airing on The CW television network in 2007. But, since the end of the show in 2012, Gossip Girl has been put on Netflix. This 45-minute-long show depicts the lives of teens living in the Upper East Side of New York City. The episode that was watched covered many topics. To give a brief description; an outsider, is threatening the academic career of one of the Upper “Eastiders”, as they are called in the show. An outsider is one that does not live in the Upper East Side and one who is not in the common core friend group. The one who is being threatened is a main character in the show and is loved by many. The outsider has incriminating …show more content…
media is good for adolescents to watch. There are themes of unity within a group, ostracism – from friends, lovers, and family – and academic achievement. The central theme of the show however is that you don’t mess with the those from the Upper East Side, which are those who hold the money. The whole show is centered around corruption through money, secrets, lies, and bullying, again through the use of money. However, this episode mainly dealt with the relationships between couples and families. It also dealt with the topic of how one can have a better chance at most things if they have money behind
Reality shows that are based on teen pregnancy like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom sheds light about the troubles on becoming a teen parent, finishing high school and struggling to buy the baby’s need and wants. Lately, these shows are stirring a debate if they are trying to support or avoid teen pregnancy. And this topic is important to the public, because it relates to the young community’s future. Young girls and boys can watch these shows and have different outlooks about having a child. Sometimes, glamorizing teen pregnancy on television might confuse the young community, because they can be fickle at times. They might think it is acceptable to be pregnant so young and others will consider waiting until marriage. Reality shows can either encourage or discourage teen pregnancy based on the individual’s mentality.
Television has a widespread influence on everyone, especially children. Children are impacted so much by the things they have seen and watched on TV. They learn many things from TV, but their social skills and other learning abilities slow down. Watching TV numbs the mind of children and keeps them inactive from daily exercise. Furthermore, speech delays can occur in children who watch excessive amounts of television. Television programming such as MTV, Adult Swim, and Family Guy exposes and promotes negative
Gossip Girl, an American teen drama television show created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage released on September 19, 2007 on The CW, is based on teens life from the Upper East Side of Manhattan that are friends that occasionally betray each other's trust throughout the episodes. Their wardrobes are full of designer clothes, they drink cocktails at New York City’s coolest bars, dabble in drugs, all while still in high school. The drama that these young and spoiled people have to deal with differs from many other people’s lives. Their parents are known to being the greatest in New York. Either the manager of great empires, business manager, designer in clothes and much more. The lives of these residents of Manhattans Upper East Side is a big scandal.
The effects of watching Television on adolescents are tremendous. It has grown with us humans and has help up grow as humans all of these years. From my point of view, all I see is nothing more than improvement and success with the more years to come we have with our evolving knowledge with
* For teens, television is a major source of information about sex. A survey conducted in 1997 by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 61 per cent of young teens, ages 13-15, rated entertainment media as their top source of information on sexuality and sex health. This should concern parents because although two-thirds of TV shows contain sexual content, only one in ten includes any reference to safe sex or the consequences of unprotected sex.
Television has increasingly become the quintessential epicenter of communication, since its invention, in 1927. At any moment in time 2.5 billion people are viewing some form of television broadcast (Ballard). Modern society has introduced various categories of television. These variations range from educational to violent. This broad spectrum makes it hard to generalize the effects it has had on American youth; however, television seems to have increased moral and intellectual degradation. Through violent shows and monotonous news broadcasts, American youths have become desensitized to the poverties, and hardships of the world. This desensitization has had several, and moreover negative, moral impacts on the youths of America. Nevertheless,
In this Evaluation assignment, I will scrutinize a Television series called “Gossip Girl”. I will be examining the “Gossip Girl” series based on the following criteria, I believe “Gossip Girl” is one of the best shows that has ever existed. I have my reasons for that, “Gossip Girl” consecutively earned awards for the time they were on air, the inflamous cast and how teenagers can relate to the way that characters in the series deal with drama and romance situations in high school and college.
Including lots of technical events does help to make television shows more esthetically pleasing, but there is more to it than just a prettier picture. For this part of the experiment I watched the television show Gossip Girl. The entire time I watch the episode I was constantly marking down technical events. Technical events affect out perception of reality. It might sound strange, but by using technical events the production companies are tricking our brains to believe that life happens in small moments. As an observer we only witness snippets of the full picture, our reality becomes smaller, shrunk down by the absence of real time. It tricks the viewer into focussing only on the pretty picture the director and producers want us to see. We are unable to witness the fuller picture. In real life people think about so many variables, but in television we only focus on one thing at a time. When one watches a television show it could take them only forty-five minutes to watch an episode, but days could go by for the characters. This messes with their perception of time. We base our recognition of time off ever-changing elements, by finishing and completing different tasks. When one watches TV however the viewer is unable to separate different moments because of technical events, which ruins our perception of time.
Television series’ similar to “Gossip Girl” have been released in previous years like “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “One Tree Hill,” and “Dawson’s Creek.” However, “Gossip Girl” is different from them with it’s terrorizing and mysterious blogger who antagonizes each character.
Gossip Girl consists of the lives of the filthy rich students of Constance on the Upper East Side of New York. These privileged teenagers go through a series of obstacles and events that showcase the flaws of the high class life. This series is compacted with articles of commodity, as well as use of power, wealth, and luxury and how these attributions affect you in society. Serena Van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass, and Nathaniel Archibald are the four main characters. They do whatever they need to in order to get what they want- literally whatever. They put the lives of others in danger. Their family and friendship bonds are tested through these six seasons. In this television series I will be analyzing the
Gossip girl is a television show about privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York that cannot hid a secret from the ruthless blogger who is always watching. There are six seasons where the teens continue to figure out who leaked information on their personal lives, and to figure out who “gossip girl” really is. During the show we see the teens that are resistant with their friends and their family members. Resistance meaning they protests separation and lashes out are unable to be soothed by the parent.
The TV shows that I have watched in the past that were designed for adolescents are One Tree Hill, Awkward, Faking It, and many others. The common themes that I have seen in all of theses shows are sex, teen pregnancy, drugs use, violence, etc. The TV shows show most of these things as being bad such as the drug use and violence, but I believe that these shows also encourage some bad behavior. The show The Secret Life of An American Teenager is practically all about sex and teen pregnancy. While the show does show teen pregnancy and sex before marriage as a bad thing, it also shows teens having sex for the first time as like changing, and i just think these TV shows encourage sex before marriage. The themes on the show make the show very
We (Teens) are getting exposed adult content, including, alcohol, drugs and coarse language at younger and younger ages. Reality television has become a popular cultural phenomenon in modern day society. It has become a culture people aspire to be a part of, to a life of
“Insults, temper tantrums, selfishness, gross behavior, and plain old stupidity—these are the main ingredients for most of today’s reality TV shows. Guess who’s watching them? Millions of young people…” (Ilisa Cohen, 14). The world is changing in many different ways and people are influenced by many different situations. Teenagers are however, easily influenced by the good, the bad, and the reality. Not only are teenagers observing from the reality around them, but reality that is shown on television and sometimes in commercials as well. Teenagers find role models in the reality shows they see on television today. It is not always a bad thing, but it is also not always a good thing. Many people wonder why teenagers today have begun
Negative effects of Mass Media for teenagers, The exposure of sex images and excessive portraits of violence in movies and dramas have instilled negative thoughts and taboos in the mind of these teenagers for they have been consistently getting increased exposure to things which are not suitable for their age.
