The Coaching Classroom
In my high school, coaches are required to teach a class and many of them teach a core class that all students have to take. But with their busy schedules, how are they supposed to maintain a good classroom? High school coaches teaching core classes may have less structured classrooms and provide less tutoring time, which may result in different student success.
Since coaches ' time is limited, they do not have time to set up they 're class in an effective manner. Regular teachers usually have a structured class that they have planned out thoroughly. Since being a teacher is their only role, they have the time and the will to think about their classes and how to help the students learn. Full-time teachers usually lead their class actively because they have time to analyze issues that may be stunting student learning and come up with solutions; they 're methodical. For example, Mrs. Gallegos is an Ellison High School English 2 teacher in Killeen, Texas. She has an effective method to teach everything. For vocabulary, we had to write all of the words down and we would do plenty of practice until the quiz. We all knew the words by heart by the time we took the quiz because Mrs. Gallegos had provided plenty of learning opportunities. She spent her time thinking about what we needed in order to learn. If Mrs. Gallegos had another job, such as being a coach, she wouldn 't have ample time to do that. Coaches ' classrooms are not as structured or thought out
Teachers who dubble as a coach often split commitments between being a coaching and teaching such as when schools have to find substitutes for the days
Coaches need to have certain skills and knowledge to undertake the role. In my opinion a coach needs to be patient, supportive, interested, aware of others as well as self, attentive and perceptive. Such elements underpin effective coaching and a genuine interest in the person being coached.
With the right influence, communication and skill development is the key to a valuable coach. Without my two outstanding high school coaches, I wouldn’t have the love for basketball and track the way I do today. They have taught me everything I needed to know for the present, along with tips for the future. Coach Lewis and Coach Kohler have done more for me than what I’ve ever deserved and I will never be able to pay them back for all their help and encouragement. But I hope they have understanding of how much of a change they can make on someone's life, someone's life like my
When I think of coaching I think of practice planning, game planning, scouting strategizing of offense and defense, choosing my starters, little things like that. All of those ideas are valid, but that’s not the whole picture. There is a lot more to coaching than planning for a practice or a game. Many times a person who would like to coach an interschool athletic team has little or no preparation to teach sports skills and techniques. The only qualifications is often the person’s participation on his or her high school, college, or university’s team, coach of a community youth team or even perhaps as a professional player. While all that experience is valuable in one way or another, it does not constitute an adequate preparation for
I’m a fourth year varsity soccer player at an all-boys private school of less than 550 students. Despite our small enrollment, for athletics we play in the division of the largest schools, mainly ones with enrollments over 2000 students. We can argue the fairness of our placement as long as we like, but it won’t change our position. We have to accept the challenge of playing larger schools.
Stars: I attended Lee High School in Huntsville, AL for 4 years. As a general, I participated in many varsity sports, but anyone who knows me knows my favorite is football. Looking in as an 8th grader the varsity team at Lee was pretty good under head coach Kinte Welch; however, finally graduating and becoming a part of the team my freshman through junior year was pretty awful. Our program was awful because of many reasons, but you can 't blame it all on the head coach. Ending my junior season, we 'd maybe won 4 games in 3 seasons. At the beginning of baseball season my junior year the athletic department decided to release him from his head coach position. After many potential coaches filled out for the position our principle filled the spot. He was familiar with the football in our area and he also coaches at a rival school Huntsville High School. Coach Woods has been around football all his life also playing linebacker at the University of Arkansas. Woods taking over and hiring a new staff made our life so much easier. The senior class who came in as a freshman, and stuck through the tough times help lead the team to the 6A playoffs after not being a contender for the last 10 years. I played a huge role as a defensive captain and we were ranked one of the top defenses in our region. As a three-year starter for the Generals, we turned the whole program around my senior season and made it to the second round of the playoffs where we lost to a power house.
A person must have specific knowledge of the sport they desire to coach, because they have many duties that come with their job. “One of the main duties of the Coach is to put together a team of the best athletes available in the specific sport” (Field, 2012, p.115). Coaches and athletes both want to be successful. This is why one of the main duties of a coach is to pick the top players out of high school. It is hard to be successful if a team does not have the proper athletes. A coach’s duties will vary depending on the size of the school. At a small school a college coach could be responsible for not only coaching but also recruiting, scouting, finance of the team, and much more, while at a larger school a coach may have their own departments for each of those duties. The main focus of a college coach is to prepare his or her players
Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn’t necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs of his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will develop a strong sense of self-motivation. This helps by allowing the player to
A coach of any kink is important for any team to run and function in an appropriate manner. They keep the team in good condition, ready for the next task, and how to have an open mind about anything that comes their way. Coaches need to be flexible and be able to move things around as things and people change daily. Coaches are leaders and have the potential to inspire many people they come in contact with. With the right coach people and teams can get many things accomplished in a fast and appropriate manner. This is a skill many employers look for.
A Coach is somebody who develops, improves or promotes changes in a persons ability and understanding. Coaches work with another person or a group of people and develops them as people using sport to progress them in their development. All coaches have certain responsibilities towards performers, their sport, their profession and themselves. Below I have identified what a coach may be required to fulfil.
Coaches need to be able to convey passion to their players, to inspire them to get the most out of their performance. A successful coach will possess a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the game
I believe a coach is really a teacher and not just a teacher of athletics but also education and life. I believe the ultimate goal of a high school coach is to send their athletes into the next phase of their life ready and prepared to succeed.
My coaching practice is constantly being developed. It was not until the book club, when I began to understand the theory, principles, and practices around being a coach. My experience with being coached as a CM and classroom teacher was centered on providing feedback; therefore I equated coaching with delivering feedback. This archetype of coaching led to my directive coaching style. In the beginning, my one questions was “How can I fix this?” To be plain, my focus was on changing teacher actions. In practice as a directive coach, I researched, shared tangible and intangible resources, met with content leaders within schools and TFA on behalf of my teachers, and modeled lesson.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
English class seemed to be the most dreadful to take within school. Writing essays for most of my grade in a class is not what I was looking forward too. When I entered college I knew that it would be one of many challenging classes I would have to take. Starting from the lowest English class to moving on up, the writing assignments became longer and more thought out. The time came when I got into this class that I knew more work was going to have to be put into essays and thus brought out what I had not seen before in my work progress.
