As I watched the beautiful Greensburg sunset disappear, I knew I would have fun. I watched the trees and the gorgeous buildings get smaller and smaller till they we’re nothing at all. The music was playing, I knew that this would be a great night. My aunts and I were on our way to Marian University.(Rachel went to college here). We were going to carve pumpkins and bake the seeds. It was about 7:00 when I saw the big buildings get closer and closer. We had finally arrived. We started unloading the pumpkins and groceries. The school was so big it could have swallowed the state of Ohio whole. When we got inside I saw the kitchen and and the hallway that lead to hundreds of hundred dorm rooms. Being six it was quite scary. We brought the food and pumpkins to the counter and the groceries to the dorm. We ate some food and watched some tv, when I said “LET'S CARVE PUMPKINS”. It was about 10:00pm and we started carving the pumpkins, they were gross and slimy. I carved a Jack O-lantern. I put the seeds on the baking sheet and covered them in a blanket of garlic …show more content…
The card went swipe/beep, swipe/beep, swipe/beep. I sat on the floor in the corner and cried. I didn’t know what to do. They were getting closer and closer. “Back of you evil pumpkins” I heard from the door. . It was some of Rachel's friends. “Get away from her.” “Zap,Zap,Zap” I heard. Those pumpkins shrank faster than lightening. They yelled “Is Rachel’s niece in here?” I yelled back “Yes, Help me I’m in the corner.” The evil pumpkins had tied me there. They helped me get stable because I was so unsteady. They got the card to work and took me to the room, and there they sat. Lets just say I had quite a rage on them for losing me and not doing anything about it. Me and Rachel went back to the kitchen to put the seeds in the oven. There sat the pumpkins all shriveled up. We put the seeds in the oven and went back to the dorm. The room was empty. Where was
I could smell the odor of the pines next to me as I walked through the concrete sidewalk. It was my first time on this campus and I didn’t know what to expect or what to think. I didn’t have any idea of what was coming, but yet, my excitement and adrenaline ran throughout my blood,
First off around noon i started making a pumpkin swirl cheesecake. It made the kitchen smell delicious. Once it was finished it looked so pretty, with all of the orange and white swirls. Next i had to prepare stuffing, Mom said “ You need to add lots of sage!”. So I put in a whole lot of sage. I don’t much care for making stuffing because the onions because it makes my eyes water like crazy! The homemade stuffing always goes great with turkey.
The next day we placed the pile of pumpkins we bought on our picnic table outside. My dad sat down with me and lined up the carving utensils around my tiny pumpkin.
As driving into Hickory, Indiana, a tiny town, I see that every house has a basketball hoop on the side of their barn. The little town consists of one main street. It has the local supermarket, barbershop, hardware store and some other small stores. While driving on the main street, I noticed that everyone notices a stranger coming into town. That is how small Hickory is. Driving into the high school parking lot I see that the girls dominate the young men by far. Looking around I also see that everyone is talking about the basketball game that night.
Now when I say tiny town I mean it. The population is about 1,400 people with one gas station, one grocery store, and 2 restaurants with some gift shops. The first time I saw Grand Marais we drove into town and in a blink of an eye it was gone. I’ve never seen anything like this other than in movies. We finally got to her cabin, and it was one of three houses on that entire road which at first seemed horrific. But something I’ll never forget is how bright the stars were. We stood outside and saw every star in that sky, since there wasn’t many neighbors with their lights on, or highways with a cluster of traffic. The first morning I was ther, Brooklyn started to show me some amazing spots such as Hurricane river, Tahquamenon Falls, Marquette Harbor, and so much more. I got to experience a place that most people don't even realize is on the map. When the vacation was finally over I asked my friends back at home what they did. Which you can probably guess was them glued to their phones and laptops all summer. I had an amazing summer that I’ll always remember, and I'm glad it didn't involve
Arriving in the overgrown drive way trees start to crowd your vision, in the middle of all the trees I see an old beach house; that has stayed the same over the 18 years I have been going up there. Grandma is waiting outside on the front porch we all run up to give her a hug, then we go and start unpacking for a week’s worth of relaxing. First thing we do when were done unpacking is go to the old but new play structure. We sit on the swings and look out towards the big blue Michigan Lake. White caps cover most of the water along with passing boats, and some kayakers. Right over the horizon I can see the lights from the town, reaching into the sky. The sun is starting to set; the sky is painted with pink, orange, and yellow.
I remember it was a chilly October night, everyone running around in their costumes, and I myself, in a pink princess dress. My mom had spent all night doing my hair in perfect curls and I just couldn't wait to get my plastic clear heels on from Walmart that almost every 8-year old had. I knew that this Halloween would be the BEST.. Little did I know, it would, in fact, be
The leaves were brown and the weather was cold, but not unbearably cold. The morning had just started and the sun was barely out. I was eight years old at the time and it was Thanksgiving Day, and on top of the various assortment of food, my family and I had relatives coming to our house to partake in this Thanksgiving feast. My mother had gotten numerous amounts of groceries from the store throughout the week, including potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, mix for stuffing, a humongous ham, and to top it if we had the staple for every Thanksgiving, a turkey. I could already smell the scent of a honey baked ham in the oven as I got out of bed and started my day in the bathroom.
Today I went to the Lantern for the first time. When we arrived and signed in we were told to just go hang out in the living room area and talk to the residents that Cathy would be there around three. We got to talk with the residents and paint pumpkins. The residents are a true blessing.
Although I was going around the hallways, collecting candy from the nurses and a few of the older kids, I knew there was something missing. It wasn’t the same as the halloweens I had been told about. I wanted out. I asked my mom later why I hadn’t ever had a real halloween. I must have used a poor choice of words because I watched as her face fell and she glanced down to her hands. She looked to my dad before smiling to me and walking out of the room. She didn’t say a word as the crossed the hallway and disappeared. I had forgotten about the interaction within a few
We say we can’t wait to get out of here and leave this small nose budding town but years from now these are the times we’re going to look back on and the way it has shaped me into who I am today has made the biggest impact on my life. Growing up never having an empty house, always knowing someone has got your back, and the support everyone shows is not something you get to experience in other places like big cities. The town may of not had much to do but that’s when it taught us that everyone needs to learn to live a little and quit hiding behind screens all day. Now as I start to come to the end of my high school education I am ready to go explore the real world and use everything this town has taught me to try and make it a better place. My life experiences and story have prepared me for the bigger and better things in life and as I prepare to move on I can’t wait to see where they take
I have not been to a pumpkin patch since, but I now no that when I do, maybe don´t hit the cashier in the face. And from now on I will always remember this day because I can't live it down in my
After the long train ride to New Hampshire I’m finally here. As soon as I step out the train station the warm sun hits my face. I look around the area and everything looks so perfect and clean. As I look at the sun it’s smiling down at me. I see a bright clear sky, families taking strolls in the park across the street, kids goofing around in the playground, and boys skateboarding. I still can’t believe I made it out of Bellmont for good. It feels like a dream. Across the street I see two adults looking straight at me and
So we arrived to the house. The house was old enough to tell that it was not expensive,by the way the house had overgrown vines and weeds climbing up the side of the it. My father told my four older brothers to help him unpack the furniture, he told my sisters and I to go inside and pick out our rooms. My twelve year old sister picked the room right next to mine and my sixteen year old sister picked the one that faced the street.
The alarm clock buzzed loudly beside my ear. Feeling like a gong that was being hit repeatedly was placed right beside my head. I sluggishly pulled myself out of my bed and dragged myself to my closet. The words, first day of school moaned ghastly in my head. Summer was uneventful and school was just going to be hell. I picked out an old, worn out flannel and a pair of jeans to wear. Not rushing at all, I struggled to put the raggedy clothes on. They smelt like horrendous lies and rumors. Exactly what this state and my school are built on.
