“This is going to be a group project.” Most students dread hearing those words. I know that I groan inside because I think group projects are awkward and slightly unfair. Considering that more and more teachers are assigning group projects more often, I decided to look into the benefits of group projects. After doing a simple Google search, I realized that students gain many skills and learn important lessons when doing group projects.
Group projects can be extremely beneficial to students as they prepare to enter the world of work. One of the most important skills it teaches young adults it to collaborate and work with others. Often times, people are going to have to work with someone they may not like. Members of the group may disagree and

Cathy Middlecamp, who writes on Teaching Stories, surveyed students on their thoughts about group projects and observed that “dictators” ignore the opinions of others and piledrive their own agenda while “not allowing others to share their knowledge.” Working in group projects is the opportunity for these students to practice humility and listening skills. If you are a quieter student, speak up and let this person know that they need to take it down a level. If you are being the controller, take a step back and let someone else do the talking for a while. On the other side of the coin are the students who slack off in a group project. They think that because there are others in the group they do not have to do that much work. The less motivated students lean on the kids who are working hard to get a good grade to get them through the class. Evidently there is going to be disagreement about approaches and information. Some students are too stubborn to accept an opposing viewpoint and refuse to compromise. Compromising is a skill everyone must learn! When students are allowed to choose their own groups, the quieter students often get put into whatever group needs an extra person. Just because the student is shy does not mean that they do not have good ideas to contribute. Make sure that everyone
As I sit here to this day group work is still not my favorite thing it makes me angry when professors mention it. I feel as if we are now in college not in high school. We should be treated as one person when doing an assignment. So you could see each potential of each
As a college student, I don’t enjoy group work. I am the student that dominates the group and does almost all of the work, establishing group times to talk about what needs to be done, and making sure that attendance is mandatory
Participating in group activities have never really been my thing, but this project was a great experience. I got the chance to meet individuals with different problem solving solutions than I, and the people I communicate with daily. This project helped me gain communication skills amongst others when trying to make a decision, and the process of coming to an agreement. The knowledge, skills, and abilities I demonstrated throughout the weeks have grown and boosted my confidence when partaking in a group setting. I learned that people are easily offended and it may be hard to steer away from it, but it can be done. Teamwork has always been easy for me because I offer more help than needed to my teammates. The panel discussion taught me that not everyone one wants help, but the opportunity for their opinions to be considered. Each tool I have gained from this experience will make it easier for me to engage with others in the near future in a mannerly way whether it is for a grade or not.
I have never been in a group project that everyone did an equal amount of work and did it right. I tend to always be the group leader, doing everyone’s work. I know if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Another probably important and frustrating thing is that I don't have Microsoft Word, I have a new Apple Computer, so I have whats called “Pages” instead of “Word” documents. I am still working out how to use it properly and to its full extent. Another fault of mine is trying to make everyone happy to the extent that when i can't i feel pretty bad about
In an online class setting, it can be very challenging to work on a group project that requires the participation of every group member and completing the project on time. This group project was successful one each individual had because we used proper communication to assign tasks, roles, and deadline to complete the project.
Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). Christine’s group from the Case Study the Forgotten Group Member is in between the Storming and Norming Stages. The Storming Stage “is dealing with tensions and defining group tasks,” while the Norming Stage is dealing with high emotionality and tension among the group members” (John & Wiley pg. 166). Christine and her group could have had better
Throughout middle school and my freshmen year of high school, I was never extremely comfortable in large group projects. For most of my life, I preferred to work alone or do most of the work in group projects. There was a time, however, in my sophomore Project Lead the Way class where my teacher was explaining to us the grave importance of group work and how it translates into the real world of engineering. After the speech, we were put in groups of eight to solve simple engineering problems, and I began to push myself to interact with my unknown peers. Slowly but surely, I grew more comfortable in group scenarios and kept pushing myself forward. Looking forward to today, I am a captain of my soccer team and a constant leader in group projects
If you have a very negative environment or intense environment in our classroom kids don't learn as well as they do in a positive environment. Group projects allow students to work together with their peers and talk amongst themselves as one but do it while getting the knowledge and materials they need to learn. This causes the students to be less nervous when working with other and that makes the classroom they are in a more positive setting for them. I can speak from experience and I would rather work on a project with more than one person rather
a major group project I have had to work on in my life was my freshman magnet project. In this project we had to work in groups of four to research a career in its entirety including degrees to obtain and schools you can go to. From the very beginning we knew this project is going to be difficult as it had many components. we decided that divided the work would be the easiest for everyone's success. as a whole we were able to accomplish a well designed poster and presentation of our work. Separated however we were able to create a successful portfolio, the most important part of the project. We each individual we did our research on our chosen part and when the time came combined them onto a singular files which can be modified by everyone
There comes a point in a person's life when they have to cooperate with others on a group project. The people you work with might not have the same point of view as you or the same work ethic. This a part of life that a person has to deal with sooner or later. Being a lone wolf is simply not enough in today's society.
Finally, group projects do not work because someone might not do their work or part, people will get mad of simple things, and the take so much more time than they should
Assigning group projects can cause many disagreements among participants in a group or groups. Most everyone has different views, therefore arguments can break out between students about ideas or who is right and who is wrong. Many students do not get along either so they could end up jeopardizing the project bickering back and forth or not talking with each other, ruining the grade of the whole project. While some students do
I never have been great in group project because coordinating everything we all have to do is difficult. Simply finding a meeting time that everyone can attend is difficult and finding time for everyone to sit down and work can be a challenge. Everyone’s schedule is different, and each person has other responsibilities, so adding another task can be a problem. One person may have an exam due on that day, another person may have to work, and someone else may just have to take care of family business. My group name is Smooth Criminal, and the members of my group are Christ Basttista, Meagan Martinez, Karissa Helmberger, and Noah Adams. I met with my group two times, but it was very handsome. We were there all of us and supporting each other on what we were doing, and we were very happy to work as a team group.
In my undergraduate work, almost all of my classes that were directly related to my major required at the least one group project. In the beginning this was not something I was very fond of mostly because I had some bad experiences when it came to working with others on projects. Usually it was the problem of people not pulling their own weight, and doing their parts to help with the tasks. When it came time to have the assignment complete it was even harder to give a grade to those people. I did not want to be the guy who caused someone to throw someone under the bus. However, after I thought about it, I did want to be that guy because in the real world on a work project if there was someone who did not pull their weight in the job projects would not be successful. So, when it came time for grades, I was always honest, and usually if a person did not do their part I told it how it was.
Sometimes, working in group to do an activity or a project is tedious instead of being helpful because not all the members of the group work at the same speed or give the same importance to the project. Fortunately, my last group project was one of my best experiences at school. All members put complete attention and worked really hard to show a good presentation and also get a good grade. This time, working in group was extremely productive, funny, and relaxing. We finished everything on time, and each member did her part correctly. In this case I was not the leader of the group, but my friend Wendy, who was the leader this time, did an amazing job. She organized and divided all the work perfectly and in equal parts. Also, she made sure that
