Gun control is an issue that is dominating the current media coverage as well as political discussion. Democrats have been pushing for more gun control but Republicans haven’t been as reactive. The Republicans gained control of the House, Senate, and executive branch of government in 2016 at that put the issue on hold. However, recent mass shootings have caused the issue to come to light again, and this time there’s increased pressure, more so than ever before, to present legislation that controls the use of guns. Aside from that, there is a surprising lack of discussion regarding the relationship between gun control and police brutality. Police brutality is another issue that has dominated the politics of the Democrats in recent times. There were numerous incidents which led the spotlight to be on this issue, and lot of the incidents were racism-related. Although police brutality is an issue that stems from racism of local authorities and ignorance of citizens, the only way to reduce it immediately is through the use of strict gun control laws.
While the public is led to have faith in that police brutality not being an issue of discrimination, the statics and studies point to a different direction. The number of black people killed by police officers is three times higher than the national average.
