The ongoing debate over whether gun control works or not is a controversial topic in the United States of America. As each year passes, an increasing number of citizens demand more regulation in gun ownership. One side of the argument is that gun control has failed to have a major impact on gun violence and exclaim that these regulations and laws infringe upon their 2nd amendment rights as American citizens. The right to possess guns is a fundamental element to American identity. The right to own and operate guns under certain circumstances is in fact guaranteed as part of the United States Constitution. Over the course of American history and particularly in the 21st century, there exists a great debate over the possession of guns of private citizens. Both sides of the debate argue with fervor. There are those that argue fervently for the right to possess arms; they argue for guns with regard to home protection, property protection, personal security, and that it is a fundamental right as a citizen.

Americans of the age of twenty-one should be able to own guns, with a mandatory background and mental check before purchase. Before any firearm sale at antique shops, background checks should be performed. Parents should keep unloaded weapons locked away in a safe place, and should talk to their children about gun safety, and why it is important. Before shooting on the range, kids should be safely taught how to dry-fire (if possible), and learn how to safely handle guns. Unsafe gun handling should never be permitted.

The reason why this has attracted so much attention is because not everyone is in favor of gun control and each side brings up excellent points about the issue. Research related to this issue strongly supports the claim that there SHOULD be more gun control laws. Three arguments that prove this position are (1) Incidents like Sandy Hook will be less likely to occur (2) It reduces the high rates of accidental deaths (3) As the years pass by and technology updates the laws should be up to date as well. Members from the National Rifles Association state that No law-abiding American should be forced to face evil with empty hands. I say I agree with President Obama there SHOULD be more gun control laws because it should not be as easy as it is for someone who wants to inflict harm on others to get their hands on a weapon.

     News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.

The validity of his statement is not only historical, but as pertinent today as it was when spoken anew. It is learned in schools across the nation, although the importance of the words depends on the teacher, school, and region of the country. Although I am living in a city with uprising crime that has been skyrocketing over the years, I wasn’t aware of this being an issue all over the United States. American citizens have been given a right to firearms, and this right should not be infringed. Opponents of this right to firearms argue that, citizens should not be allowed the right to firearms. Their main reason is that, it will help curb violence cases by guns. This has been challenged because; criminals will still acquire firearms illegally and continue terrorizing citizens because, they are fully aware that, they are not armed. Moreover, according to Winkler (89), “Guns do not kill people; it is people who kill people,” and so, denying citizens the right to own guns will not stop any violence. Likewise, the society will not be safe as there will be an increase in violence and criminal activities because the citizens have no firearms to defend themselves.

Everybody knows that gun rights are one of the most debated and controversial topics facing America today. Guns have been part of the American society since the founding of the United States in 1776. When the colonies were demanding their freedom from a tyrannical rule. It was written down that all men who were able to own and carry a gun should exercise that right. They were needed to defend their homes and the land they loved. Many Americans are still gun proponents to this day and it has become a growing issue that have people who are adamant about their side of the argument being the only way to handle the situation. With both sides exploiting situations to make small gains and create a hostile environment. This does not allow for the issue to be addressed and fixed. Gun rights should not be infringed upon by the government. A ban would be hard to enforce, would criminalize otherwise law abiding citizens, and firearms make people feel safe.

Gun control is a topic that has been discussed for many years now. Increasingly so with all of the mass gun violence that has been occurring recently such as the Orlando and San Bernardino shootings in 2015 and 16. Some view gun control as a crime issue and others view it as a rights issue. Either way, there are people that want more gun control and people that want less gun control. On both sides of the issue, opinions range from moderate to extreme. Should we put more restrictions on firearms, or should we have open carry and allow for anybody to have a firearm? These are a few questions that come up when gun control is brought into a conversation. Firearms are purchased for recreation, self-defense, and even just to exercise constitutional rights. However, firearms are often labeled as the reason that gun violence is occurring. Society benefits from firearms in the hands of responsible citizens. Attempts to keep firearms away from these citizens do more harm than good.

In the wake of all the school shootings in the past fifteen years gun control has become a more serious issue than before. Gun control has always been a concern in the United States, but not until the first major school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado did this topic become a reality to the American public. In 1999, this massacre left fifteen people dead including the assassins. And just recently on March 5, 2001 did the tradition continue, when Charles Andrew Williams killed two classmates, leaving many injured in Santee California.

In the USA, Americans have right to own guns, and this is for self- protection. However, many people are trying to take over advantage of the law by using guns to apply physical attack on someone.
