The purpose of this report is to compare and contrast two movies made about Hamlet. I will present and discuss different aspects of the version directed by Kenneth Branagh to that of Franco Zefirelli. During this paper you will be presented with my opinions in reference to determining which version of Hamlet best reflects the original text by Shakespeare. I will end this paper with my belief and explanation of which movie is true to the original play.

The first experience of the King’s ghost is on act one scene four when Hamlet first encounter’s the King’s ghost for the first time. Hamlet makes a statement that he is cold in the night which led to Horatio agreeing with him. This gives off a hint that that there is something eerie that is lurking around at night. Once the King’s ghost reveals himself to Hamlet, that gave the Hamlet and the other two, Horatio and Marcellus a fright. What is also added is the moonlight that shines upon the ghost, that gives it a more uncomfortable aura in the air. In one part of the play, Hamlet says, “With thoughts beyond the reaches of our souls?/ Say why is this? Wherefore? What should we do?” Hamlet seems to be confused and terrified why that the ghost of his father appeared in front of him and to the other people (I.IV.53). The three major differences are in the way both of the productions start out, differences in the scene that the players put on a play, and differences in the way the productions end.

This will be comparing 2 Hamlet movies, first one is directed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1990 and the second is directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1996.

There are many remakes of the play in movie form, new movies have been evolved since the play was originally made. The comparison being made in this paper is, the originally play versus the 2009 movie version of Hamlet.

This furthers the story by sending Hamlet’s friends on a mission to tell him of his father’s return. From the beginning of the play Hamlet is already depressed and down after being called home from school to return to Denmark to witness the funeral of his father. Following the funeral Hamlet meets up with his friends where they tell him of his father’s ghost. Immediately, this sparks Hamlet’s interest and he wishes to hear more of his father. ‘The king my father!/For God’s love, let me hear.” (1.2.192-95 Hamlet) Here Shakespeare shows Hamlet’s interest in the matter

This movie based off of Shakespeare’s most famous work was a hit, raking in approximately $20.7 million in the box office. Zeffirelli’s motive in making the movie was to make Shakespeare available and interesting to younger viewers. Franco Zeffirelli was successful in recreating the play Hamlet, as the movie added extreme depth to the play making it appealing to all viewers.
