William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a very famous play that well known among all types of entertainment. Its been made into many different movies and plays that have been viewed all around the world. In 1990 Franco Zeffirelli made the play into a studio movie. Although the movie is still called hamlet, there are still many major differences to the overall film and play. Characters, scenes, lines and language all contributed to the similarities and differences between the play and the movie. Although the director made many changes to the film, he did not change the story but he changed the viewer’s perspective on all the characters.
In the play, the first scene starts off with Horatio and the guards standing at the castle. All of these people are waiting for the ghost to arrive. The movie starts off with the funeral of Hamlet Sr. This part was put first in the movie because it says that Hamlet came after the funeral of his father. The director changes the plot so he can get right to the main points and characters. The play starts with the buildup of the ghost and whether the audience believes it’s real or not. When they asked Hamlet what all the noise was, he said the new king likes to party and have many people over for celebrations. Although in the play we do not see the celebration itself we still hear about it. On the other hand in the movie we directly see the party happening in first person and see the cheers and conversation of everyone attending. Its such a nice atmosphere with happiness and enjoyment while at the same time Horatio and Hamlet are experiencing a dark and mysterious encounter with a ghost in which no one knows who it is or why its
