There are many health and economic benefits to being a vegetarian in these modern times.

Many of the vegetarian health benefits stem from a decreased risk of getting many different diseases and disorders such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension all of which are associated with eating meat as opposed to just vegetables and fruits. Many of these diseases are very common and they are also very easy to prevent making vegetarianism seem like a good idea, since the vegetarian diet aids in limiting the intake of items that cause these issues.
A surveys conducted in the United States show that there are approximately 7.3 million or about 3.2 percent US adults who follow a vegetarian and additionally there are about another 10 percent or 22.8 million people who follow a somewhat vegetarian diet. 59 percent of females and 41 percent of males are vegetarian in this group. 42 percent are age 18 to 34 years old, 40.7 percent are 35 to 54, and 17.4 percent are over 55. Also approximately 57.1 percent have followed a vegetarian diet for more than 10 years, 18 percent for 5 to 10 years, 10.8 percent for 2 to 5 years, and 14.1 percent for less than 2 years. [6]
