Introduction: Orienting the Reader to What Follows

The purpose of the paper is to analyze peer-reviewed literature from my two disciplines Global Health and Sustainability. Through the use of these disciplines I will gain understanding of their origins and integrate them through their foundations and principles. Origin storytelling, core knowledge dissemination, generative tension making, and gatekeeping will help me to discipline these profiles thoroughly. Using my apprentice analyses skills I will breakdown the real-world challenges associated with clean water through the lens of sustainability and global health literature. One definition I found that encompassed most aspects that I found relevant was defined as “ an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasizes transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population- based prevention with individual-level clinical care”(graduate institute). This definition includes the entire population and the idea of improving all aspects of health for everyone. It also brings up the fact that it is interdisciplinary, thus it incorporates different views and new ways of thinking. While it has evolved over time, the term global health is rather a recent phenomenon, which was in part brought to the public attention by the World Health Organization. “In the 1990s, WHO attempted to use leadership of an emerging concern with ‘global health’ as an organizational strategy that promised survival and, indeed, renewal”(Brown et al., 2006). By moving away from the traditional way of thinking to an interdisciplinary approach the global heath term was made popular and is continuing to gain acceptance. Global health is simply put as a way of preventing the diseases from infecting people, rather than treating those that are infected. While many definitions of the term have been found, “the origin and meaning of the term ‘global health’ are still unclear” (Brown et al., 2006).
